Wk of Feb 4--WISH Walking/Running Club

Good Afternoon Wisher's Clubbers..

I'm Sandy, and I posted a question, and was encouraged to stop lurking on this thread and post!!

I'm overweight, and yet in decent (not good, not great, decent) shape. I'm on a thread on the WISH about DISappearing Peeps... and a group suggested going for a goal of a 5K in '08 - done. no problem, as dh says that's just a walk in the Park for me - or a typical shopping excursion on the Mag Mile in downtown Chicago (I dont spend money, I just window shop!!) So, I decided to challenge myself, and attempt the 1/2 Marathon... I figure I should do it once in my lifetime!! (DH has done a couple of marathons, and half marathons, climbed Mt Rainier - and is supportive of me!!)

So I was disappointed the Goofy Regisration is closed - knowing DH he'll run besides me in the half, and do the full marathon for him - Just curious, is there any way to register him through one of the charity organizations?

I'm just full of questions arent I???

Short intro - we're from northern suburbs of Chicago, I work as a permanant substitute, and dh is a self proclaimed "computer geek" (software engineer). We have 3 kids, none who will come that weekend, 21 and 18 DS and a DD 10 that dh cant wait to see how I convince her to stay home while we're in Disney!! :rotfl2: We celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary, and our high school sweethearts!!

I have not started the "running program" But I did print out the couch-to-5K Running Program, just thought I would do better when it warms up - I dont mind cold, but below zero is beyond COLD!!

Morning - quick question re the Rainbow Bridge. Assuming that as there's a bridge, there must be a river right? Hope so as there's now a new goldfish splashing around in the sunshine - Sonny passed away yesterday. he was buried in the garden with his spongebob squarepants tank toys. I really need to start running again, I think madness is setting in.

So, Jackie, yep join the virtual training club. Just to let you know we struggle a bit up the hill by the swimming pool, but that's only cos I haven't run for a few weeks!! Last night, I did real exercise, cycled for 35 minutes, have now learnt that's a bad idea when foot is bound, it makes your knee hurt a lot at 2am!! Still took tape off foot last night to give skin a break - and this morning, no plantar pain - things are definitely looking up. Helen

Helen -- I am sorry for your loss. Sending a  sweetie. I am sure Sonny is enjoying the river that certainly runs under the rainbow bridge. And how wonderful that you have no pain in your foot today! Do NOT overdo, and be sure to wear the right shoes to give your foot the support it needs.

Sandy -- I believe your DH could still register for the 1/2 and the full but he won't be permitted to attain the goofy medal. The reason I think this is because apparently, some people registered for the two races last year and did not indicate Goofy Challenge and someone posted that they would be receiving the Donald and the Mickey, but no Goofy. I'd even suggest registering for both on separate applications if that is what it takes to secure his position in both races. And good luck on your training! Be sure to stick around here -- you will get so much support and encouragement and advice! The journey is even more fun than the race! :thumbsup2

Oh Helen, that's so sad. I am sorry to hear it. I'm sure he had a good life.

I thought I would toss this out--- did anyone else who is registered for Goofy recieve a ChampionChip that they did not order?? I got one in the mail a couple of days ago-- it's the 2008 Goofy Race and a Half ChampionChip in its nice little case. But I didn't order it. :confused3 I even doublechecked my order form :confused3 Definately didn't order it. :confused3 Maybe it's my "Year of a Million Dreams" suprise?!?

Kevin - I can't say for sure because I only registered last week. I wish I had gotten a ChampionChip though (darn me for feeling stingy that day, since I was signing up for the Minnie 5K, 15K and the Goofy all on the same day).

Anyone know how I can order a special 15th anniversary ChampionChip now?

It is 10 deg F (-12 deg C) and snowing. I may try to go for a run tonight (I saw some folks running at 6 am today, so if they can do it, so can I, right?) If I don't make it I'll definitely aim for some cardio/weight training at home. Good luck to everyone on their runs today!

Abra cat-- Good for you! The fact that you resisted the goodies is fantastic! Scales are calibrated differently. Stick with one and you will feel better.

Thanks, Worfiedoodles (love your name!)-- I'm still resisting the treats, but I'm guzzling Diet Dr. Pepper like crazy.

What's a championChip? I read that its $35, is that the chip you get to record your time? (DH had one at the last 1/2 marathon he ran, he tied it on his shoelace, but gave it back at the end of the race)

Also, which clippie is for the half marathon? I know its not Goofy... :confused3

Re Rainbow Bridge, :grouphug: So hard to help our little ones with the concept - dd lost her pet guinea pig... but I had helped her classmate with the loss of a pet dog, so when it was her turn, she had everyone in the vets office crying while she was consouling her pet while the pet was being "put to sleep" Thank goodness for the Rainbow Bridge!!

Thanks, Worfiedoodles (love your name!)-- I'm still resisting the treats, but I'm guzzling Diet Dr. Pepper like crazy.

One of our cats is named Worf, yep after a certain Klingon. We call him Worfiedoodles when he's getting brushed or a treat. He always comes....he's actually more like a dog.

Helen-- So sorry to hear about your loss. Give yourself a moment to breathe and pamper yourself.

eeyore 45 --Donald is the Half, I am proudly sporting it in my signature!

Ouch...my brain hurts :headache: Thanks to everyone for all the good thoughts, prayers and pixie dust. I'll find out in a couple weeks if I retake the test in 6 months or if I make it for the next 6 years ;)

Just off the TM for 3.81 miles in 50 minutes. Have my last LR of 12 this weekend then comes TAPER MADNESS :joker:

Vicki...how cool...you're a PA too! Welcome to the WISH medical team! This morning was my first crack at the PANRE. I'm in a specialized endocrinology practice...haven't done general medicine since school

Maria...I love TNG! We're getting into Voyager reruns now on Spike...never watched it while it was on before. (There goes another one of my deep, dark secrets

Helen...so sorry to hear of Sonny's passing. Glad your foot's getting better.

Sandy...the Champion chip is the one you get for your shoe to keep your time during the race. You can use Disney's and return it or buy your own commemorative chip from Championchip. If you buy your own, you can keep it for subsequent races. My DH is a 'geek' too (network engineer)...he's hoping more geeks join the team.

:worship: for y'all running (and living) in sub-freezing temperatures. Is there a point at which it's just freakin' cold and the number on the thermometer no longer matters.

Matt...good to see you around. Have you heard anything about deployment? Where would you go? Hi to Cheryl.

Where's Anne?

Judy...you continually crack me up! Hope we get to hang out more at the Minnie!

Carrie...glad that you gave the TM a spin again! If you're worried about using the TM at your gym, you can always come here and use mine ;)
The Sarasota half is on March 4.

Krista...when are y'all going to be at WDW in May?

Jen...congrats on the Garmin! I have the old 301...love it, but the HR monitor chafes something fierce :scared:

DH is now getting the running bug. He and DD14 are signed up for a 5K the day before the Sarasota half. He's running two days a week now and wants to borrow the Garmin to map out his LR route. Would this be a good enough excuse for a new Garmin :rolleyes1 ?

Looks like we have a pretty good 5:30 pace group shaping up for the Mickey!

Hey there WISH team members!!!

Today, I headed to the gym afterwork and had a GREAT TM workout. I felt so much better today, almost 100%. Not stuffed up, no headache, I felt great. I ended up doing 3 miles in 25:44. With an average pace of 8:32....yes that is right....8:32. My fastest three miles since I started training, I was so psyched. I felt great during the workout, and didn't feel like I was pushing myself that hard. Running on the TM wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, but I would much rather run outside, can't wait for the warmer weather to return!!!

Carrie-WTG for getting back on the TM, that is the hardest part!! But you did it...WAY TO GO!!!
Angie--Good Luck on the tests next week!! I know the feeling about keeping up with the thread--it is very hard sometimes. I also agree about signing up for races....GREAT form of motivation!!! My feeling is I have to run since I paid for it!!
Jackie--you are so right about changing the playlist and making your run more fun.....I updated mine last night, and I didn't even think about being on the TM today, cause I was so into the songs!!!
Dave--glad to hear you had a great day with your daughter!!
Kim--WAY TO GO on the weigh in---that is awesome..you are doing great. Keep up the good work!! Hang in there with the weather, spring will be here before we know it!
Stephanie--Great job on your workout-glad to hear the ankle/foot felt good.
Abracat--I hope your knee feels better soon, and WTG for getting it checked out now before it gets any worse.
TxAng--WTG for getting back on track with your workout!
eeyore45--WELCOME!!! to the team! You will love the support you will get here!
Helen--Sorry to hear about your loss!

Well, I think I am sort of caught up!! Sorry to those that I missed!!

To all: KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!! YOU ARE ALL AWESOME!!

Mel - Good to hear you made it through! Low temps bite, but what makes it intolerable is the wind chill. If its really windy AND cold, walking out to the car, or into a store is a painful experience.:scared1:

Since the snow yesterday, my beloved route on the bike path is not cleared off enough to safely do any milage so I went over to one of the local hospitals and walked on the sidewalk that circles the entire campus. My odometer on my car says it just under (by about 20 feet or so) 1 mile for a single trip....so I went around twice and then some to get in approximately 2 miles. I really should join a gym and use a TM.

Andrew

Hey all... Just wanted to come and post that I am over the rut, at least for now. I came home from work and hit the TM. I did 35 minutes, which is great considering my last couple of weeks on NOTHING!!! I still have my cold, so that was the pits, and I forgot to use my inhaler... oh well. OH and since it is still SOO FRIGID here, I ran in my tights and a long sleeved shirt. Remember, this is indoors on a TM. I just can't warm up. I don't think I starting sweating until 15 minutes into the run.

TXAng - Nope, the stress is not seasonal for me. I work with family and there are some very trying times. I pretyt much gave up on Monday and almost walked out. It is just so hard!

Dave - I think I forgot to mention... How Awesome that you had that time with your DD. I am trying to do "mommy and me" things with my girls, but separately. So far time have been hard, but I really want to start making the effort again once things free up for me.

eeyore 45 - HI!!! I am just north of you in Wisconsin. If you ever want to meet for a race, let me know. Even tho Chicago is about 4 1/2 hours, I still love to go there!

Mel - my DH is a geek also and as you already know, he posts once in awhile. He is a Software Engineer/Product Manager. OH and if I can register for the full, I am thinking I will also be in the 5:30 group. Keep a spot for me!!!

Have a great night all.

Laurie - AWESOME RUN!! :yay: And thanks for the well wishes.

eeyore45 - Your husband can register for the Goofy through some of the charities. We ran last year for the A T Children's Project and I have come to believe in the organization so strongly that I am running the Minnie Marathon for them and we will do the FULL for them next year. I just checked and they have Goofy Registration available, check them out if you like:

http://www.atcp.org/Welcome.html

Kim - I think that leaves you plenty of time to get ready for full. We did the Disney 1/2 and are doing Gasparilla about 10 weeks later. We feel great in fact we are getting faster. I think you will be good, go for it!!:cool1: :cool1:

I hope everyone is doing well. I'm off to study.

Angie

Maria - Cam started a losing weight while training thread - it's great! Also, we will be staying at BCV for next year's marathon. You can definately walk back through Epcot to your room. Thta's what we will be doing!

Helen - for Sonny.

Mel - endocrinology huh? I may have to pick your brain at some point. I ditched my old endo. and am trying to keep things in check with my new primary. Good luck on those test results!

I am in such a rut! I didn't get to exercise again today. And I probably shouldn't have done any walking or running anyway. I think I did something to the bottom of my foot by wearing my boots 2 days in a row. (I am normally a sneaker-all-the-time girl) When I was walking into work this morning, I had a slight limp. It seems like the bottom of my foot is too tight, if that makes any sense. I have been trying to stretch it out all day. Of course, I could have done a yoga or abs DVD - but that didn't happen.

I also went above my WW limit for Lifetime tonight. :sad1:
I am heading right over to Cam's previously mentioned weight loss thread.
So obviously, my phone dialing xt did not work in the keeping weight off dept. ;)

And where is that Anne????

He's running two days a week now and wants to borrow the Garmin to map out his LR route. Would this be a good enough excuse for a new Garmin :rolleyes1 ?

Since he is a computer geek (your description) you need to get your own. Let him play with his. It might be enough to keep him running!

Hi, everyone! I finally have a good TM session to report, the first since Saturday.
This was my post from Saturday's effort:
keenercam said:
Quick post to track my training--
3.1 miles in 41:30 (that may be slightly faster than I've done it before). First mile was 12:20-- my fastest mile yet

Tonight, after my 5 minute warmup (.33 miles), I did 3.1 again.
Here are my splits:
mile 1 -- 12:43
mile 2 -- 13:21
mile 3 -- 13:11
.1 mile -- 1:07
Total time 40:22! Pace: 13:01!!! I am so close to getting below 40 minutes for my next 5K. I just don't know if I could do this outside. I am really, really hoping I could do this IRL!

So, I've improved my overall time by more than a minute compared to Saturday. And my PR for a 5K was 43:33, so this is more than 3 minutes faster!
