Wk of Feb 4--WISH Walking/Running Club

Cam: you rock!! So awesome...you inspire me. Makes me feel like a slug to be on the coach writing this but after that stomach bug, yuck. I won't go there. :cheer2:

Let's hope I can get out this weekend. I'd rather be on the road than TM but I'll take what I can get. Maybe if I'm careful I can go outside. Try out my new iPod shuffle--2nd generation. Tiny little thing but so cool!! :cool2:

Good evening WISH Team!

I've just finally got to sit down for a bit so I'll only post up what I've got going. I did eliptical tonight and did 2 miles/30 minutes. Seems like it was quite a bit of work for something with no impact. Does anyone know how that trades off for running or TM? Will I be able to train eliptical for a good amount of time and get out there and do an event?

Hey Lily: I've asked my trainer this question and the response is typically that you are comparing apples to oranges. They are both fruits but that's where the similarity ends.

Fruit aside, the eliptical will help the cardio but you need to do the TM if you are training for a running race. If you cannot do the TM for now due to injury, keep up the eliptical for the cardio work or try biking--that will help also. But don't push it. Listen to your body.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for but it's what my trainer has told me.

Lily- I have a different perspective and that is that cardio is cardio and yes, actually running/walking is needed to 'harden' against injuries but not as much as most people think. I prepped for Goofy w/ no more than three runs a week, never did back to back LRs, and Goofy was easy for me. But what I also did was lots of hours on the bike, mostly on the trainer due to daylight and deteriorating weather. You have a substantial cardio base from your training for the past couple years so just the cardio to maintain it and go back to running gradually as you get feeling better.

Okay my exercise physiology bootie is returning to lurking. I have to be to the hospital to preround on my patients at 0600. Recovery week training wise w/ about 8 hours on the schedule as opposed to last week's 13+. I have a nasty feeling that I'm going to blow away last years totals for all three sports but I really like my coach, his feedback, and how he's setting things up. It should really help me to make my goals this year.

Happy training and welcome to the new people:)

Cam - Great job on the 5K on the treadmill! Congrats on improving your pace so much.

Lily - Good job on the elliptical. Keep up the good work - training is training, so it is great to get the cardio in, no matter whether you are on the TM or the elliptical.

Jim - Thanks for the heads up on the Garmin rebate. I definitely plan to get one soon. I'm thinking the 205. Anyone else have that and can share their thoughts on it vs the older models and the 305?

Well, so much for my grand plans for running in the snow this evening. By the time I made it home it was snowing quite a bit and getting pretty dark, so for safety's sake I didn't head out. Tomorrow for sure though! I worked on my abs, then got called out to wing night - not necessarily the best food, but yummy. Oh well, tomorrow is another day!

Hi,

Just a quick post to say that yesterday was a rest day for me. Today I did 1 hr yoga class with dd16. Great class.

Have a great night.
Maggie

I'm going to be in Charleston, SC on March 2-4 for daughter's gymnastics meet.

I've been looking for a race in the area, but have not found one yet.

Anyone have any suggestions? :confused3

For all intents and purposes--it is supposed to be 1:1 as long as you are putting forth the effort you would with running and walking.

Yes you can train on elliptical. I did with my knee surgery and the first 'thon I did, we had a teammate that had some kind of injury from horseback riding and she did MOST of her training on elliptical post-injury and wasn't cleared for running or the WDW marathon until the week before the race. She did fine and finished in a respectable novice fine.

And yes--she did her 20 miler and EVERYTHING on an ellipitcal. She watched LOTS of movies that season.

Her injury has since healed and I think she learned something about her passion for horseback riding so that she would be able to continue doing it. I think it was something like the timing of a ride--with a run and it was too much jumbling for her spine. She trained last season with no trouble.s

I disagree that it is apples to oranges as does my coaches. The reason is that it trains pretty much the same muscles as running or walking--without the impact. Not the same as using a bike for an alternative. But as I said--you do have to put forth the effort and do your best to maintain the form and intensity as much as possible as you would on a run/walk.

Lily - I haven't finished MfM yet, but I seem to remember reading that someone actually did all their training on an elliptical. They don't recommend it, but it CAN be done.

Did 45:00 on the TM this AM. Usually I really enjoy it, but this morning was really hard. Somewhere around 25 minutes I almost threw in the towel, but kept thinking about all you guys in the half and full and how hard it was to keep going, so I figured I had to be able to finish this cushy little run! (Judy - I think you offered to walk the rest of the way with me, but I was determined to run it. Thanks anyway!)

Gotta get back to work - am having a really hard time staying focused on anything today - apparently it's not just the treadmill!

Throwing in the towel is not allowed....just think of all us poor...pregnant...women...:sad1: ...unable to....:sad1:...run...:charac2: .

Ask not what your running can do for you...ask what your running can do for those of us who can't....:charac2:.

(Wow--that was hard to type with a straight face.:lmao: )

Hi everybody just a drive by.....busy day at work.

Hope everyones training is going great:cheer2:

Did a light walk on TM last night 1.87 miles in 30 min at a 3% incline. Wasn't going for distance just wanted to get in a light workout. Hip and upper right leg is actually a little sore this morning so I might take today as a rest day, we will see how it feels tonight.

If I don't get back online today have a good one everyone.

Kim

Oh forgot to mention DH and DS signed up for their first run a 8K on April 7th. I am so glad my entire family is getting in on this. DD and I will be there to cheer them on.

Kim

Jim-- I just printed out my rebate form. If you're thinking of buying with the rebate, you have to go to their website to get the form, so don't forget! I've had my 205 for a week and a day and haven't had a chance to use it yet:mad:

I did upperbody weights and 3.5 miles on the TM last night. 3.0 in 34:18 (11:26) at 1%grade. A big step back from yesterdays (10:04) but that's how it goes. I'm doing a 5 miler today which will make 4 days straight of running and I still have my LR (only 6) this weekend. I definitely agree with Lynn and plan to switch one of HH's runs to xt. I won't make it through 18 weeks of running 5 days a week.

Mel-- hope you aced your test:wizard:

Kevin-- I'm so sorry you are in a major stress phase of life. I've had those and they do a number on you. Are there any stressors you can take control of and cut out? Sometimes in the heat of things we don't realize somethings can be altered. Hoping for the best for you:wizard:

I'll be back wih my dr's report soon.

Also, I haven't forgotten about the tyvek bibs, I'll get around to them soon, too!

Sunny

Morning all!

Here's a quick catch up on my training. I started reading Marathoning for Mortals and I think I know what training plan I will use but it is not the one I WANT to use. I really wanted to try to run the marathon but it's looking like the run walk is going to be the right plan. Darn it! Maybe next year.

I have done well on my two a days this week. I am using Couch to 5K to round back into running shape and am now at 2.25 miles. I ran Monday evening, did a recovery walk and ab work on Tuesday morning (I counted that as part 2 of my Monday 2 a day), worked out hard with my trainer Tuesday night, did my 2.25 in 30:40 on Wednesday morning and did a recovery walk, arms and abs Wednesday night. Today is a rest day. Tomorrow is a 2.25 run in 28 minutes in the morning and then a recovery walk, abs and leg strength training in the evening. Saturday is another rest day.

Mel - I am hoping to be in your 5:30 pace group. How many folks are in so far?

Helen - So sorry for you loss.

Have a great day everyone!

Good morning TEAM!!! I finally have some time to "talk" today--this *might* be a long post. ;) I had a great workout last night, the elliptical really kicked my butt!! I played around with the resistance and ended up alternating between 5 minutes of 3 resistance and 5 minutes of 4 resistance for 30 minutes. It was a harder session than I normally do and it made the time go by faster. After the elliptical, I lifted weights, I went a little lighter on the leg press, but it was still heavy!! I'm feeling really good about my IT band--I think all of the weight lifting, elliptical training, walking with a little running is really going to help and hopefully I can kick this reoccurring injury to the curb once and for all. Is there a crossing fingers smilie??? :)

Elliptical training--I have no idea how it compares to running, but I know that it makes me tired when I get off it! I trained on the elliptical for the last 3 weeks of marathon training and I don't think it hindered me at all. Also, (and I have no idea if this means anything or not) when I run a mile, I burn 90 calories and when I do a mile on the elliptical, I burn 90 calories--that makes me think the level of intensity is similar between running and the elliptical.

Maria--I am really impressed with how your training is coming along and how determined you are. I really don't think you are going to have any problems with the half marathon! :thumbsup2

Dena--What a post!! You should win an award for that! WOW!!!!

Helen--I am so sorry about Sonny. I'm fairly certain there's a big, clean river at the Rainbow Bridge.

Kristi--You and your concerts crack me up!!! I thought of you when I saw that the Goo Goo Dolls were on QVC. Did you watch?

Angie--Good luck on studying for your tests!! It's probably best if you stay away from the Disboards; I know I jump on to check something real quick and end up being sucked in for hours!!

Jackie--I am so impressed that you can get up so early in the morning to run. I'd much rather snuggle in bed with my Hines for an extra hour!!!!

Kim--Excellent job on the weight loss!!!!!! There is nothing better than seeing that scale drop down.

Christa--Here's another vote for the PIG!!!!!! If you do the Pig, would your family come with you?

Kristi/Abra Cat--:wizard: :wizard: :wizard: for your tendonitis.

Cam--You are completely rocking!!!!! You are flying!!! Awesome job on the 5k's and don't worry about slowing down IRL, we all know how exciting races are, you'll probably blow your PR out of the water!!!!

Sandy--WELCOME!!!!! And HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

Mel--Sending some belated :wizard: that you'll be good for the next 6 years. :) Stephen and I are heading to WDW on May 11, a little reward for the Flying Pig. I think you need a new Garmin. ;)

Jen--Great job getting out there and running!! Are you feeling happier today? I always feel on top of the world when I run, especially when I've taken a break.

Martha--Hope you are feeling better!!!

I know I didn't get to say hi to everyone, but I do have to get started on my work. It just suddenly piled up!!!

Greetings Team -

This morning I did 45 @ 3.9 @ 1%. I was happy with it until I got here and started reading about all the Speed Demons we seem to have going on. I suddenly feel very slooooooow. :guilty:

Dave - Oh Dave! Are you in the area they are saying could get 100" of snow???

Mel - I'm glad I make you laugh. Sometimes I even make myself laugh! :rotfl: I'm looking for Anne too.

Laurie - OMG! You are so fast! :woohoo: OK, well, I'll see you at the finish line. Don't wait for me.

Jen - YAY for you getting out of that rut! It was only temporary. I hear ya about not getting warm. I go down to the TM in the morning bundled up like I'm going outside. Winter hat and all. At all starts to come off a few minutes after I get going. But man, it's cold, even inside! OK, well, downstair in the finished basement. Perhaps we should move the TM upstairs, in the living room. HA HA! Yes, OK, I though that was you at the start of the Half. Thanks for not thinking I'm senile. I remember you. I thought you were very cute! :goodvibes

Cam - Oh Cam! That is great! :woohoo: Man, I better get a wiggle on if I'm going to keep up with you guys!

Martha - Hee hee "fruit aside..." :lmao:

Jackie - I'm turning into a slug. I didn't run at all this morning. I did up my pace a teeny bit. Geez, I better get my rear in gear.

Lisa - OMG! :rotfl:
Ask not what your running can do for you...ask what your running can do for those of us who can't....

Kristi - You are too funny! :lmao:

Kevin - :wave2: :love2:

Lily - To answer your question..I have no idea!:confused3 I do not use the eliptical because it hurts my knees. Weird huh? I do know you can exchange biking for some running though....See xterratri's post. I had a friend that totally trained for NYCM on his bike and he was wicked fast for the marathon.

Jackie - Sometimes the "cushie little runs" are the hardest for me. I understand how you feel. In my opinion, it is easier for me to get out for a 20 miler than a 5 (sometimes). I think running is around 80% mental. If your mind is not in it, it is hard to do. I think that is why many runners say the "real" marathon begins at mile 20. That is where the mind starts screaming to stop the maddness and you have to battle it for 6 miles.

Helen - :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: to you on your loss!

I cannot remember if I posted my run for yesterday or not. And I am too lazy to go ans look it up.
Anywho: Ran 4 miles with an 8:45 ave pace. That includes JRT wanting to stop every 3 min to sniff something. I finally took her home, dropped her off, and went back out to finish my run. SHe is still angry with me.

Judy - You never need to belittle your run. There is only 1 person I compete with in running....that is me. Look how far you have come in such a short amount of time. I am proud of you and I know if you want to get faster, you will. You are strong willed like me!;)
If it makes you feel any better, I am super slow compared to some of the people I run with. THis sometimes makes me feel bad, but then I look at how far I have come and remember I am not racing to win, but to finish...and to enjoy the run.
