Wk of Feb 4--WISH Walking/Running Club

Hi all, cycled again this weekend, all good there.

Mel: Looks like we might be in the same wave for the full. I'm registered at 5.30 too - I'd like to do it in that, but I'm thinking with the half the day before I'm more likely to be closer to 6 hours. Mind you if every other race I've done is anything to go by, I'll run about a 5 hour pace for the first 13 miles, then progressively add 15-30 seconds per mile from then on and stumble over the finish line at a point bearing no resemblance to the pace I thought I was going to do at about mile 10!!!

Not much else to report from me, see you tomorrow - Helen

Happy Sunday team.

Sorry I have not checked in all weekend, I have to catch up on all these posts sometime today before superbowl.

Just wanted to say hi!!!

Kim

Okay, we're supposed to enjoy exercising, right???

So I guess it's okay that we met the ice cream truck while on our walk today and spent half of our time out there eating ice cream!!! ;)

It was fabulous. :goodvibes I felt so guilty but it was so much fun!!! Just like a kid again!

And it was time to increase my walking distance by 0.2 miles again so now I'm doing 1.6 miles each time! Taking it slow and steady. ::yes::

Monte: snowshoes? :lmao:

cdn_gal_eeyore: gotta mall near you? Just be careful when running in the snow.

Mel: awesome job on the run!! Mark that in your running log.

The only time I run in a hat is when it's cold, raining or snowing. Otherwise, no. However, since I'm running the Minnie, it might behoove me to reconsider my stance. I'm figuring on a hot day so a hat would help keep the sun off my face. Maybe a visor would be better.

Enjoy the upcoming week!

Hi,
I'd also like to join the WISH group. I've been running seriously since mid-Oct. This morning I ran a 10-K race in just over 62 minutes....was a little apprehensive about running it because the temps are in the mid-20s, but it turned out to be my best 10K run ever so I'm pleased with that. I'm looking to run a half marathon at the end of April then Disney in January.

I been exercising sporadicly. Friday and Sat. I did 45 min on the TM. Today I did my long workout outdoors. The temp was 13 and the wind chill was sub-zero. I walked/ran 5.83 miles in 90 min. I ran at each 10 min for as long as I could. Overall pace came in below a 16 min mile. Still need to get faster.

Everyone have a good training day.

Hi Again!

This time I'm going to try a few more replies. I did my LR yesterday. Still at 2.5 miles. I decided that once I'm going 2.5 in my 30 min. workouts, I'll start making the LR 3. I'm really close, I think this could be the week. This is my own little formula. If it is full of flaws, someone please tell me!

Today is a rest day, so no news to report. I'm just 2 weeks into this, so every workout I go farther and faster. Thank goodness, because it's very motivating!

Cam -- How was the polar bear plunge? You are a brave one!

Mel, Kristi and Jen -- I can't imagine going that fast. Five miles in under an hour! Congratulations on your new accomplishment!

Angie, Jill, Leana & Jam217 -- Welcome to the Team! I have learned so much in a short time. This thread rocks!

Dena -- Yum! I want to walk with you. Hey, Ice cream man!

Kathy -- Great job getting out in the cold. Hope you have an awesome week!

Jim, Kim, Vic, Cecelia & everyone else -- I hope you're off to a great start to a wonderful week!

Maria

Well, I was a wimp and decided that since it never stopped raining long enough yesterday, I didn't go for my long run. Hopefully one weekend before March 4th will be clear for me to get one in. :)

Mel - great job on the 5 mile split. I had better watch out or you are going to pass me during the race. :thumbsup2

Angie - Welcome and good luck with your training.

Jim - I never run with a hat. It seems to get in my way most of the time. Although there are times I wish I had a sweat band to help but after a while it probably wouldn't do any good either.

Cecilia - I hope your foot pain isn't permanent and you can figure out why it is there.:wizard:

Leana - Welcome. Snow what is that. ;) Being in Florida, we don't get that fun around here. I don't have any tips other than I would probably play too much instead of running in it.

Jill - Welcome. Depending on when you want to do your race, start slow to get some sort of base to work off of. Then pick a training plan (John Bingham and Jeff Galloway are probably the most popular) that you want to follow. Then keep going and before you know it, you will be finishing the race.

Vic - Great job on the run today.

Kristi - Great job on your run today. Glad yo didn't have to attack anyone during it. Although it could make for a little cross training. ;)

Helen - Have you moved yet or is it still upcoming?

Maria - There is no set plan on what a person should do. As long as you feel up to increasing distances/times (no more than 10% a week), then go for it. If you don't feel right, then keep the same amount.

Judy - Loved the pictures of Logic. Hope the infection is getting better.

Now to get back to rearranging the house before some football game starts. Although everytime I think I find a place to start, I discover more things that need to be finished first. :rolleyes1 I think at this point, Lynnda will be happy if I get the crib together before the baby gets here.:lmao:

I haven't had a chance to read through the thread so please forgive me. Just wanted to say :thanks: to everyone for the congrats and well wishes. This has taken years of work by my entire family for me to have this opportunity. I feel very blessed :goodvibes

Oh and Craig the offer is in finance rather than accounting (though that part of my background was the reason for the offer). I just hope I am up for it :upsidedow

Thanks! I'll be going to 2.75 mi, because that is 10%. I knew I would get great advice on this thread!

From theoretical macroeconomics to microeconomics to finance to accounting to pure bookkeeping like Bob Crachit, you run a continuum. I live a bit to the left of the finance/accounting line, but I can move quite a distance in either direction. From your discussion of your training you seem to be a bit to the right of the fin/acct line, but you have the ability to move in either direction as necessary. It also sounds like you fought more with financial theory, but I suspect your finance job will be more analytical and less theoretical, so your accounting training and experience will serve you well. Don't be too worried, they must have liked your qualifications.

Mel, Kristi and Jen

You all inspired me to commit to more intensity in my running this year. I already use the bike and weights for recovery days, so my vow for 2007 is that every run has some or a lot of tempo or hill work to help me carry my desired race pace and stay strong in all races. Today I did 5 on the treadmill, always some incline and threw in some long hills, plus 30 seconds or so faster per mile than last weeks efforts. My other vow this year is to run at least 5 races. In the last year I only did 2, a 10K (DNF, calf pull) and the Disney Marathon. I think I've lost my feel for what race morning, the starting corrals, the first mile, everything, are like. For sure I'll do the BAA Half Marathon in October. Hopefully this, along with a 45 degree morning on January 13, 2008, will take me under 4:30.

Best to all

Craig

Best to all.

I'm thinking I may do the 5k in May or at least the 1 mile run.... I didnt get to go to the gym today because it closes at 6 and I coach special olympics both basketball and bowling on sundays so i think i got a good 2 hours of exercise in today but I may break down and set up my mums treadmill and get at least a mile in today.... I'm thinking I may increase each week by a half mile I plan on walking 7 days a week... plus working with the trainer at the gym... I'm not sure that running will be in my sights for a while ( i have a really bad knee I broke it a few years back and have been struggling with it for a while I'm hoping that once I loose some of this weight itll help my knee problems)

Have a good week everyone!!

Jill :dogdance:

Mel - That's awesome about your run. You will do great at Sarasota:cool1: There must be something in the air down here. We just got back from our best training run ever - 13 miles in 2:12 ( so close to a 10 minute pace), we beat our Disney time a month a go !!!! - :yay: Gasparilla here we come !!!!

Jim, Stephanie, Vic, Maria, Bill - Thanks for the welcomes

Have a good week !!

Maybe the tech hats will make a difference but I hate running with a hat. I like yourself am used to running in the heat in the great sunshine state but I get MUCH hotter :scared1: when I run with a hat. My husband prefers a hat, but the heat build up does not bother him!!!

Angie

We should meet up at Gasparilla. Have you done it before, I heard it's a really nice run along the water. :thumbsup2

Last year I did the 5K and had a great time. Not much to look at in that short distance, but I have looked at the marathon map and it looks pretty good.

When we get closer I PM you with some details so we can meet up.

Hey there WISH team!!

Just checking in and catching up on the posts as I watch the Super Bowl. I have no training to update you on, because I have done nothing since Thursday. I have a pretty bad cold, and I just couldn't muster the energy to do anything, so I rested all weekend! I am hoping I feel better tomorrow as I really want to get some strength training in. I start my "official" training for my half marathon tomorrow. I am using the Hal Higdon program.

I renewed my gym membership today, so I am hoping to get there tomorrow and get some form of a workout in but it depends how I feel!

Cam--How did the Polar Bear Plunge go today??? I was thinking of you doing that today, I can only imagine how cold that water was!!!!

Mel--WTG on the five mile split!! Congrats on your best run ever!!!

Angie--:welcome: to the team!!! Good Luck in the Gasparilla 1/2! WTG on the long run today!!!

Cecilia--I have never had a pain like that in my foot...but I hope yours feels better real soon!! Take care of it!

Leana--:welcome: to the team!! Be very careful if you are out in the snow and it is slippery. I love running in the snow, I just take it easy and be very careful. We have been very lucky here in NJ this winter, we haven't had much snow at all!!! I hope it stays that way. I am also using the Hal Higdon plan for my half marathon coming up in April. I would love to hear how you like it.

Jill--:welcome: to the team!! It is great to see so many new people joining us!! I recently started training with my goal to do the WDW full next january. You should find a training plan that suits your fitness level. There are many plans out there, you just have to find the one that is best for you.

Vic--WTG on your run this morning!

Kristi--WTG on your 5 miler!! Doesn't it feel great when your last two miles are your fastest! I love that feeling!

Kathy--WTG on getting that LR walk/run in the cold weather!! You have plenty of time to get faster, keep up the good weather!!

Jam217--:welcome: to the team!! WTG on the 10k time!!

I think I am all caught up now!!

Good Luck to all in the new week of training!!! Hopefully, I will feel better and get back on track!!

So um, is anyone else feeling a little
Goofyb.gif
this weekend?!?

I was! So on a whim, I decided not only to run the Double Bridge Run 15k on Saturday in Pensacola, but we then drove out here to Tallahassee for the Tallahassee Half Marathon on Sunday! Count em, 22.4 total miles (9.3+13.1) in two days!

I figured it would help me gauge where I am physically, and how far I have to go before next January. So first the Double Bridge Run...

Was planning on 9:30mpm or so, but ended up getting out pretty quick in the freezing cold, and then there was about a 10 knot tailwind blowing us across both bridges, so I ended up pretty much going after it from the start, knowing any time would be a PR (my first 15k).

Splits: 8:32, 8:34, 8:50, 8:54, 8:48, 8:45, 8:51, 8:41, 8:21:yay: , 2:31(.3)
Total: 1:20:51 PR! 8:39mpm avg

Most importantly, I had no IT band pain, and felt pretty good overall, other than being your usual amount of sore after a hard run race. But the most Goofy I've ever done before in a weekend was the RtfC and RftT (5k+10k) in October, and 9.3mi+13.1mi was not only further than I'd ever run in a weekend, but probably further than I'd ever run period, since even during the marathon this year I probably walked a combined mileage more than 4 miles.
So I expected about 10mpm, which was my marathon avg until I crashed late in the race.

Splits: 9:04, 9:02, 9:11, 9:12, 9:24, 9:15, 9:12, 9:29, 9:39, 9:34, 9:38, 9:46, 9:21, 1:32(.1)
Total: 2:03:22!

About five minutes off my PR, and clearly my pace sagged later in the race, but helloooooo I didn't run a 15k the day before I ran that time. :) Funny that I still beat a couple of my other HM times though, including at DL this year, even while running tired.

So overall, pretty ecstatic with the results, confident that I'll be able to at least complete the Goofy if I keep up my training, and although I'm sore, it's nothing specific, and I don't feel like I'll be down for as long as I was after the marathon.

Also props to DW, she ran the 5k at the Double Bridge with a pretty good time, which was actually her first run since Disney, and she's now getting back into the swing of things. :)

Congratulations everyone else as well on your training, let's keep it goin! Oh, and we finally ordered our WISH shirts too. :cheer2:

Matt

That is awesome and serves as an inspiration to us:thumbsup2

Good Job!

It feels good to realize that we are capable of so much more than we think we are.

Angie

Thanks for all the welcomes guys! I went to my local running store today to ask them about ice joggers (slip on spikes for your sneaks) and running in the winter. The fellow I spoke to actually recommended just running in my usual shoes rather than purchasing spikes. I then ran around the neighborhood this afternoon and they did a pretty good job of clearing snow off the sidewalks so it wasn't too big of an issue. I have a pair of trail shoes that have some slightly better traction than my regular runners and they worked well. I'll just have to check out my local YMCA for days when running outside just isn't bearable.

I continued with base training, logging 2.7 mi in 34:30. It wasn't speedy (but then again, I never have been), but I also wanted to be cautious with the roads. I ran 4 min, walked for 1 min, which is a formula that seems to work well for me.

Welcome to the other new folks - Angie, Jill and Jam217. I can't wait to hear everyone else's training stories.

Matt, those are some great times. Good job!

I found what caused my ITB problem was doing back to back races, over use in one weekend. Your not having that this weekend is great.

Just make sure you rest it and don't push it to hard for the next couple of days. It needs to rest. :)

Matt - Great job on the back to back races this weekend. It looks like you are on the right track to finish Goofy without any major problems.

Bill
