So is Disney's Port Orleans Resort French Quarter the closest resort to the marathon start? Can you walk from the resort to the start? Is it possible to get a room for marathon weekend?

Dave,

I have already booked for the POFQ for marathon weekend - so it is totally possible, right now- you can book room only....when you are 500 days out (I think) you can book the packages with the tickets, or at least that's what I've been told.

Mel - :grouphug: I can't imagine how hard that must be.

jodi - Buses are available to everyone who can get to a bus stop (at a WDW resort). No need fr opackages or anything.

Judy - Did that package include park tickets? It's really bugged me that it's sooo high. NOt that I need it, but it seems really wrong.

OK, back to work. :(

Gone for a couple days and this place explodes!

Dave - I hope the shin splints get better.

Carrie - PD for your Dad.

Heather - I was the same with teh weights/Nautilus. I thought I would look ridiculous/ Now I really don't care, I am usually so sweaty from my run/walk that any vanity has long passed. It is amazing how much stronger I feel having added weights in, especially my back, it has worked wonders.

Cam - WTG on the 3/2 I am trying to get there.

Dave - Congrats on the numbers, here's hoping they DO get to the 19th percentile.

Maggie - I hope the knee gets better.

Christa - Congrats on the bike!!! I am thinking of getting one, how did you decide what was best for you?

I finally got my answer on my knee pain. I have floaters, small pieces of cartilage that sometimes lodge themselves in the knee. Nothing can really be done surgery wise, because it would be a search mission they way they move around. Their advice when it happens, slow down, stretch until it dislodges. The Wonderful World of Knees!!

I tried the scarf for my breathing worked a bit, guess I will just have to get used to it or train indoors in the winter.

My Dr. is doing up a training schedule for me based on my ability and times so far. Thank goodness it will be a 24/25 week schedule to get me ready without killing me. I am hoping I have the stamina to maintain.
They big thing he did say was I would have to committ to at least 55 a week.

Question for anyone - how often do you do a long run? How long is it? Your recovery time? How do you prepare mentally? Thsi is my biggest challenge, I obsessed over not finishing the 1/2 for so long. Now that I finished that I am thinking I may have bit of more than I can handle.

Oh, I almost forgot. My mom emailed me and told me she printed out my marathon story for my uncle in Colorado(he's not on the internet). He read it several times. I remember when I was a little kid he scheduled a visit to see us in April specifically so he could see the Boston Marathon. Anyway, he said to her he had one question, what was the reference about Heather and Shoes? :rotfl2: So I emailed back to her Heather's shoe saga, which she will inturn relate back to him! Heather, you're famous (and so are your shoes) :lmao:

Sunny

That is too funny! :rotfl: I would rather be famous for discovering a cure for cancer, but I'll take whatever I can get. :lmao:

I did 6.6 miles on the bike at the gym this morning, then I did some WL. Inspired by Sunny, I actually leg pressed 100 pounds for 20 reps. :cheer2:

Tiff- Your shoulders will hurt after your first few rides until your shoulder muscles and back muscles get stronger and used to the positioning of the bike. That is completely normal. However, if the pain continues after biking regularly for several weeks, you may want to take the bike to the local bike shop and have it refitted to your body. While initial shoulder pain is normal, continued pain may be an indication that your bike is not fit properly. Here is a great bike forum for women that has all kinds of information: http://forums.teamestrogen.com/index.php?

I put advice from this board into action this morning. One of my partners asked me how the 1/2 marathon was. I smiled and said "Great!"

AWESOME :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Boy did ok yesterday and then his fever went up at around 5:00pm. He begged me to go to school today, but i kept him home. he sounds terrible! Hopefully, he will be better for preschool next tuesday. Today is generally my long workout day but.... obviously I won't be doing much today. I might get to do my LR on the TM. I have an 8miler scheduled for this weekend, so I could do it today.

Dave - glad you found some good crosstraining!!

Dave-- Craig walked to both the half and the full from POFQ. The full is about .25 miles from the start, the half I think was closer to .5. I stayed there for that very reason, but I chickened out for two reasons. It is very dark and the street is busy at 5AM! And, I was told by two people that people were turned back on the half morning because it was a safety issue. I don't know if they can legally make you turn back, but I'm not real assertive so I didn't chance it. But lots of people walk. This year I may try for POFQ again and brave the walk. I waited for AAA rates to come out last year and booked my stay sometime in Aug with no problem.

MIckey, check out hal higdon's training schedule: http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/novice.htm (you are doing the half, right?) Also, check out the various links Mel puts on the opening post. The LR becomes a part of you over time. I have a strong love/hate relationship with mine! What you will find with various training schedules is that you push forward 1-2 miles, then push back alternating weeks of long/short. Some schedules have two longer runs and the third is a step back, others are alternating each week.

MelR-- Poor little guy. I hope he is better real soon. pixiedust:

I suppose I'll head over to jelloize my arms. I'm not really looking forward to it.

Sunny

I crack myself up! :rotfl2: OMG! :lmao: I'm too much!

I wore my Garmin to work today! :rotfl:

I don't have much to do today so I thought I might as well read the manual and set it up. People are looking at me a little stranger then usual. A couple people have asked, which of course gives me the perfect excuse to say "Oh well, yes, you see I am training for a half marathon...blah blah blah" I got two "Oh wow, cool"s and one "ohh, Okaaaay". Ha ha ha! :lmao:

I did my usual 45 min @ 3.7 @ 1% this morning. I am going to try to get to the bookstore and get a copy of MFM. I'm starting to wonder if I am on track or not. I realize I'm still training to train but nevertheless, I don't have a real plan in place. :scratchin

Mel - Yes! Excellent! Four miles! :cheer2: Four miles! :cheer2: Four miles! :cheer2: Oh thank you for your comment about our wedding picture. We were actually planning on getting married on a Princess Cruise in Alaska (Can you tell I was trying to get as far away from my MIL as possible???) but then we went to WDW on vacation and stayed at the WL for the first time and absolutely fell in love with it. I said one day while we were walking thru the lobby "You know, we could get married here" and he said "Let's do it!" so we changed all our plans. :cloud9: It was fabulous! I loved it! Sorry you're having a rough week at work. Let me know if I can be any help with getting rooms. I'm all caught up at work and could call WDW if you need me to.

Maggie - Thank you! Mist is doing very well. :goodvibes She was very entertaining this morning, rolling around in the snow. She rolled completely over twice (Which makes her worth a hundred dollars more! That's an old wive's tale! Hee hee) and on the return roll rolled UP the hill! I was very impressed! She's really athletic!

Carrie - That crazy price did NOT include park tickets! Only room and a round of minature golf. Are we all thinking POFR or R?

I miss Cam.... :(

Hi! I ordered from Fond Memories Graphics - the one I got has the medal, the official WDW 1/2 Marathon logo, and my name, chip time, and First Half Marathon. I am pleased with how it turned out.

I got the same one as Pat. It is wonderful. It sits on my bookshelf across from my desk in my office. The only problem is it inspires me to get out and wog -- while I am at WORK!!!! I should mount it on my fridge at home instead! :rotfl: Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but Fond Memories provides a medal. You don't have to give yours up. So, I have the one that is mounted behind glass and I have the one they put around my neck at the finish. Maybe that's the one I should hang on the fridge or on the cupboard where the chips and pretzels are! ;)

Jodi -- The buses are available to anyone staying on site. They run from the hotels.

Mel -- AWESOME AWESOME job on running so much! :cool1: I am so happy that you are seeing the results of all your discipline and hard work. Congratulations! :worship: I am sorry you are having such a difficult time at work, but am glad your patients have you.

Melissa -- So sorry DS is still sick. Hopefully today is the last day of sickness for him.

Hi, to everyone I missed! And thank you, Judy, for missing me.

Warning -- going off topic here! :offtopic:

I did not get to my yoga/pilates class last night or to the gym at all last night or this morning. DD17 is completely wearing me out. I am so worried about all the stress she is putting on herself re: college, etc. She got accepted everywhere she applied except that she is waiting to hear from UD and Penn State and may not hear for about 5 more weeks. In the meantime, she keeps having these "I'm so stressed" meltdowns. I think the apprehension about graduation, leaving all her friends, starting college, etc. is very stressful. I'd like to think she isn't thrilled about leaving home, either, but am not sure she has that clarity of thought! ;) Anyway, I ended up leaving work early because her school counselor was worried about her and didnt' want her driving home. I ended up taking her to the medical center where she was diagnosed with a sinus infection and severe inner ear infection that was causing vertigo, nausea and vomiting. So, it wasn't all in her head (well, some of it was! :rotfl2: ). Anyway, I am hoping to get to the gym tonight after taking both kids for doctor appts and driving DS12 to play practice.

It is such a gorgeous :sunny: day here that I am absolutely CRAVING the outlet of a WOG!!! Of course by Saturday the weather will be 20 degrees colder and dismal. Figures!

Guess what?!?!
I DID IT TOO! 4 MILES!! Whoo Hoo!!!

Mel- sounds like we could have run together. Congrats on your 4!!! Feels great doesn't it?!? :woohoo: Our times were pretty similar except you were faster than me...you stinker! :teeth: :thumbsup2

Dave- thanks so much for encouraging me to try it! I knew I had to do it to report my success to you! :goodvibes Good luck with your shins! I'm wanting to do the POFQ thing too...let me know what you decide.

Everyone- Check this out! My dh finally posted our Disney Race Journal. Turned out pretty cute, even though my pics were horendous!

Love to all I missed! :grouphug: :grouphug:

DENA

 to DD17. Her entire world is about to change. I can imagine it must be stressful. I didn't go away to school, so I can't say I know exactly what she's going thru. Plus things are so different for kids today. You are such a good mom. pixiedust: to both of you.

Judy

Dena - great race report. I sounds like you guys had a great time!!!!

Mel - Ick. sorry about your week. I was actually thinking about sharing one of phil's on call stories, but you would probably think me more callous than funny (they are pretty funny though!)

Judy - Mist sounds great!! I love that you are working the "my marathon" stuff into your conversations!! I think that must be part of training :lmao:

Cam - ah parenting

I don't remember who was asking about rates for marathon weekend, but this past yr, they announced special rates (Helen told me about them) a couple of months b/4 our trip. They were for 4 nights at POR w/ free upgrade to waterview room it was cheaper than anything the travel agent found. it seems like there was a free upgrade to water parks too. I'll probably do that again next yr. I wasn't brave enough to walk over. I chickend out b/c i'm a rule follower. next yr i will work up the courage. I had planned to ride the bus for hte 1/2 and then walk for the full once i got oriented to where we were, but i just couldn't work up the nerve. I will grap lynn and sunny next yr to takle the walking over with them!!!!

I'm so totally bored. :coffee: Here's some entertainment for you all....

Mel - My favorite place in the whole World is on the walkway to the WL marina so I really wanted some pictures there....

001676-0076.jpg

Of course, anywhere at the WL is beautiful....Even with me in the picture.... :crazy2:

001676-0065.jpg

And this, my dear friends, is Judith Anne, intoxicated, in the hot tub at Sandals in Antigua. Yes, the one working hot tub they had. Great combination, hu, me, stinking drunk, in a hot tub. Great. Just great. (Note: I don't normally drink. Ever. So by "stinking drunk" I mean I had finished one entire rum drink! Whoo hoo!)

Judithinhottub2.jpg

And this is my darling husband, trying to kill me by making me try sailing for the first time on a Hobie Cat, I think it was called. There are no pictures of me as I was flat out and clinging to the deck for dear life.

OK that is all the off-topic entertainment for today.

Dave and Others

Yes, I stay at POFQ before the races and walk to the start. I suspect one positive factor in my successful Goofy was getting from the hotel to the starting corrals quickly and easily, and arriving at the last minute fresh, not having to stand around in the cold.

I feel strongly enough about this that I stay at POFQ the night before the race even though we have a Boardwalk 1 BR for the week (another DVC member, in our case we bought specifically to stay 1 week in January around Marathon weekend). I check in at POFQ early during the day, and head over late in the evening just so I can sleep later and have an easy trip to the start.

The marathon start is a 5-10 minute walk from the lobby of POFQ. A bunch of us were in there stretching and making the last bathroom stop. I left about 5:35 and was in the starting corral by 5:45.

The start of the half marathon is quite a bit farther. Martha and I left the lobby about 5:20 and were in the corrals with plenty of time to spare.

I have never seen anyone, official or otherwise, trying to turn runners back. During our walk to the half start we came out the same time as probably 10 ladies from Old Key West, and we all made the trip together.

Now that I've given up one of my great secrets I better book the room before they fill.

Dave, like Sunny said, we also stayed at POFQ with the intention of walking to the half and full starting lines. But we also chickened out once we got there. In order to walk, you have to walk out the main entrance to the resort (no sidewalks) and cross Bonnet Creek Parkway. You need to walk beside Bonnet Creek for about 1/10 mile and then cross the bridge that takes you to an entrance ramp to Epcot Center Drive, which is actually an expressway-like road that runs around the outside of Epcot. This is the road that the half and full marathons start on. As Sunny said, the roads are busy at 5:00am and there were police cars parked at the bridge crossovers so that no traffic could enter. I don't know if they were turning people away, but I wouldn't doubt it.

Next year, we may stay at POFQ again simply because we enjoyed the resort, but we won't try to walk to the start lines. The busses that they have at each resort do a very good job of getting you to the start line quickly, even though it is a little earlier.
Keep in mind, too, that if you have a bag to check at the security area, you will need to go to the staging area at Epcot first to check your bag. If you walk from the resort, you'll end up right in the corrals, so you'll bypass the whole security area.

Hope this helps.

Judy - I'm bored today too!!! Sadly all of the entertainment I've experienced has come from children's television shows!! I must say the pics were great. I didn't know judith ann had long hair. I thought it was short from your wedding pics. post more. it's much better than watching another episode of any show that asks a rhetorical question and then blinks at me as i supposedly answer!! :rotfl:

Hi everyone!!!

:Pinkbounc I had an MRI :Pinkbounc

As crazy as this must sound to anyone outside this group - all I could think of during the MRI was getting back here and telling all of you about it :goodvibes

I told the new ortho that I had been diagnosed with hip bursitis and he said, "my dear you have whole lot more going on with your back than that." His office has an open MRI machine so I was able to have it done all it one visit. I won't know the results until sometime next week though.

Gotta go. Will try to check back later.

Hi Gang!!!

Cam....Here's some pixie dust for DD. pixiedust: I'm pulling for her to get UD...it's my alma mater :goodvibes . This is such a stressful time for her....and YOU TOO! ((((HUGS))))

Judy....THANKS for the pics. THey are sooo great!

Dena....LOVED your journal. Great pics as well, I enjoyed taking a quick look at it! :sunny:

I had an "adventurous" run today. I was SOOOO super psyched to get out there. The weather is BEAUTIFUL :sunny: , especially for February in the north east. I was looking forward to the run all morning. Well, it became very interesting. About .5 miles into my run, as I was feeling great and gliding along....out popped two (yes TWO) pitbulls. YES PIT BULLS!!! :scared: I love doggies. I really do. I'm a cat owner, but I really like dogs. These guys scared me to death! They turned out to be friendly....but did leave some slobber on me ;). I had to stop, get my bearings, figure out where they came from. THEN I decided to just keep on running....they followed me LOL! They stayed with me about another .5 miles then disappeared as I stopped to ask a neighbor if she knew where they were from. About a mile later....yep one of them found me again. This time it followed me HOME! EEk. So I played....fetch the stick then SPRINTED up my steep, long driveway. QUick hit the garage door and sprinted to the door to shut it before my friend got in the house. AHHHH. What a way to end a run... :rotfl2: , does that count as speed training?

Picture me watching the garage door go down....WAY too slowly I might add....as this HUGE pit bull is racing back up the hill with the stick. Man that dog was fast. But I was faster! Poor thing...I feel bad for the doggy but my two terrified cats would have literally died of heart failure if this big dog got in. ACK!

So I have NO CLUE how far I ran....so I just added 10 minutes on to my run to account for the lost time with the dogs. Either way....I did it! :Pinkbounc

Speaking of reservations...
for all those who did the 1/2 last year, do you think I will want to get up early the next day for breakfast in cindy's castle? I was thinking of doing this as a reward for myself, but I don't know if I'll be too freakin' tired to enjoy it. How bad was your recovery?

DENA

Woo Hoo ~ Woo Hoo :cool1: :cool1: I finally got out & hit the pavement. This is the first time since the marathon that I have been able to do it & go all out. I did 4 miles. The 1st .5 miles warm up & last .25 cool down. I avgd 13:56 pace incl my warm up!!!! :cheer2: I was afraid that since I've been just xt that my pace would be slower. I did run/walk intervals & also my walking pace has greatly improved. I was running any where from 11:55- 12:30 and my walking pace was in the 13's. I was sooooo excited. Doing pilates later.

Judy-I think that is hilarious you wore your Garmin to work!!! WTG on working it into the conversation :thumbsup2 Great pics!

Dena-congrats on the 4 miles!!

Cam-good luck with DD. I remember me as a teenager & I can't believe my mom didnt have me committed. :crazy2: I know what you mean about the weather. My LR wasnt supposed to be until tomorrow, but today the high is 70 so I had to get out & do something (those aliens again) tomorrow the cold front is coming thru & high 50/rain & Sat. sleet/high 35.. Yuck! I'm ready for spring training.

Heather-that's what I figured. They're better today. I bought from a great LBS so I can bring it back anytime to have it refitted. Also after 30,60 & 90 days for check-up & maintainence. I am loving this cycling thing.

MickeySP-I would also recommend the MFM book. I pretty much went from couch to 1/2 mary in 4 months. It was a great, logical , workable program. Take it into your DR & see what he thinks too. Its good about not increasing your mileage too fast to avoid injury.

Happy training everyone!

Oh- my mom found a good deal on disneyshopping.com There is a code for 25% off PREZMICKEY and it includes the "Run Disney" training mdse if anyone is interested.

OMG! :rotfl: I think every parent has those moments when you think "They're not sick, it's all in their head" Of course, that is usually right before they throw up on you (in the case of my DDs). Here's PD that your DD recovers quickly. :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: I remember being 17 and trying to decide where to go to college. It is a very stressful time, but I know that with great parents like you and Howard, she will do just fine. :thumbsup2

Judy- Love the photos! You look great! For our 20th anniversary, DH and I are going to renew our vows at the Poly.

Minnie- I am so glad you finally got your MRI. Here's some PD for a correct diagnosis and finally some relief from the hip pain! :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

Dena- I was up at 4:30 the next morning with DH who ran the marathon. I stood out in the cold and cheered him on at the start and when he came back by at 4 miles. I then took the monorail to the MK, cheered on every last participant who came down Main Street, and then returned to EPCOT for DH's finish. Moral of the story: It is possible to wake up early after the 1/2. You will be sore but able to move. Just go to bed early and you'll be fine for your breakfast with Cinderella.
