Wk of Feb 12--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

OMGosh, 4 of us posted within a few minutes of each other.

Are we addicted to WISH and running or what?? :thumbsup2

Amy, no big deal missing a few runs here and there. The big thing is when you get within a few months of race day, you really need to get in the long runs. Rest is good.

Colleen

:bday: Christa!!! Let us know how that new bike is working out for you.

MelR - DD5 princess: is home sick today. My incredible DW offered to stay home with her so I could go into work. Good luck with DS and hope he gets better soon. Sure, we'll keep you entertained today. Here's a party for you party:, complete with a band, :rockband:, drinks of course :drinking1, and we'll even send you on a cruise :boat: :sail: have fun!

I need some help too. I'm having a real "glass half empty" kind of week. Frustrated about my shin splints, trying to be positive about my grant score but knowing that it very likely will not get funded, and getting a little worn out by the girly-girls. I'm going to try to go to the gym this afternoon and work out on the elliptical. Maybe that will make me feel a little better. I know I shouldn't be down because other people have a lot more going on than I do, but just feeling a little run down this week.

I haven't had time to read back through the last day of posts yet. I am too excited about what I have to share with you guys. I did it! I learned how to use the weights at the gym. This morning, when I left the house I told my husband that this morning I was going to the gym to do something for my friend Cam. Then, for the first time since joining the gym 7 months ago, I finally got the courage to ask. Thanks Cam and everyone on this board for your support. :grouphug: I almost felt like Sunny as I was doing my leg presses. (Of course, I had the weights set so low it was like I was raising a scooter rather than a VW car like Sunny! :rotfl: )

I also got in a 30 minute walk. My hip is bothering me again, and when I started to run, my body refused. I was able to walk at a 15 minute pace on the TM, which is good for me. Okay, I better get to work. :badpc:

Christa - Happy belated b-day!!!

Heather - Wooh hoo! Way to take that big step! Cam is such a good influence on us!

DAve - Hang in there. We all have down weeks. MAny people in the world do have it worse, but somethimes that just doesn't help OUR lives. :wizard: Hoppe things get better soon!

MelR - Hope ds gets better soon. Enjoy that mocha!

Amy - Ditto Colleen. Don't push your body too hard too soon. The LRs in teh real training time are most important. Right now, you want to stay on track, but missing a run here and there will not kill you. Training too hard for ytoo long, could get you injured, though.

I believ I heard that it takes 2 weeks off to effect your muscles. WHile you don't want to test that, at least you'll be skiing and getting a work out on your day off. I think we've created a monster her. ;)

Heather -- I am so happy for you! And so proud of you! :woohoo: Congratulations, sweetie! It is a big leap of faith, isn't it? We knew you could do it. Just wait until you see how great it makes you feel every time you do those machines.  You ROCK, kiddo!

After reading all these posts, I do believe the official WISH song should be "Ain't no stoppin' us now!"

I feel much much better today! Whatever I had seems to be almost completely gone. I did my 45 @ 3.7 @ 1% this morning and it went very well. :thumbsup2

Sunny - I beg to differ with you, but the kitchen floor DOES yield many photo ops. :teeth:

Cam - WOW! Excellent on the jogging! That's really wonderful! :worship: You are so totally awesome! I can't wait to meet you IRL. :goodvibes

Mel - It seems to me you are a real driving force around here, so thanks for that, even if you didn't start it. I'll have pictures of Mist as soon as I can get DH to show me how to download them off the camera. Or I nag him enough until he just does it. She's quite a young lady. I am thrilled to pieces with her. :cloud9:

Dena - Thank you! I feel like a new woman today! I must have really needed that eggplant rollatini I had for lunch yesterday. :teeth: It was like a miracle cure! When I post pictures of Mist be sure to show dd. She's a real sweet horse. :lovestruc

Dave - Wow, that grant thing is nerve-wracking. When I just think about all the money that gets wasted every day on stupid stuff.....Ugh! :furious: Well, I hope they make it down to #19. Good idea on the resting. I have a tendency to push myself because I am so afraid of failing at this. Hey, you sure know how to throw a party! party:

Lilo - Oh geez ,yes! I don't think an evening goes by when I don't say something at dinner that starts like "Today on the WISH boards Sunny told me..." or "Cam said the best thing is to...". You guys are all a part of my day. :grouphug:

Christa - Whooo hooo on the bike! :yay: Lets see some pics!! Happy belated birthday! :bday: :cake:

Heather - Excellent on doing weights! That is fabulous! :thumbsup2

I have a foot question today. My left foot tends to "fall" to the outside. I don't think this is supination, as it's not really from the ankle. When I had my last PT appt for my knee I asked the therapist to watch me on the TM. She said my foot fall was normal. Now, I'm not saying she was wrong but my last three toes are starting to slide over, and one is starting to go under the other. I suppose I should go see my podiatrist. He made me $300.00 custom orthodics about three years ago and I wore them twice. I hate them. I know he's going to say to start using them. Plus if I go back to him I know he's going to want to do bunion surgery on my other foot. :sad2: I REALLY don't want to do that until MAYBE after the Half.

Anyway, I don't know what to do about my foot. It's starting to bother me.

A little off-topic but not completely: Last night we booked Dive Quest two times for DH, and we booked the Segway tour and the Keys To The Kingdom tour for our Sept vacation! :hyper:  :yay: It's getting closer every day! :teeth:

Judy

Greetings Everyone: I forgot to post this, but on one of my LWs this weekend I was listening to U2 on my MP3 player. "Unforgettable Fire" came on, and it had a refrain that gave me goosebumps. It was really appropriate for what a lot of us are going through in our training, and I thought I would post it.

Here's the refrain:

U2 "The Unforgettable Fire" (1990)

"Walk on by
Walk on through
Walk 'til you run
And don't look back
For here I am..."

Judy, glad to hear you're feeling better. Sounds like your workout went well. About your foot...I'm definitely not an expert...but it does sound like something you should see the podiatrist for. I'd hate to see you get injured due to it :(. My feet aren't stable at ALL....fortunately my new sneakers keep them steady.

Dave! Great song...of course I love U2 anyway....but those words couldn't be more fitting :thumbsup2 . It's funny b/c one of the songs on my iPod is titled "I'm NOT Okay". LOL...it's so funny when that song comes on because it typically hits when I'm trying to get up one of my hills here. And I really am NOT okay. :rotfl2: The words go something like "I'm not okay...you wear me OUT". HAHAHA...definitely not an inspiring song, but appropriate none the less!

Carrie: You are partialy to blame for turning me into a crazy runner! :crazy2: I'm going to take everyones' advice and enjoy my ski weekend :teeth: . I'll skip running this weekend but get back to it on Tuesday. Besides...my legs are going to be killing me from all the time on he slopes.

Speaking of sore legs....class was great today. But I swear I am not exagerrating...we did over 300 squats and lunges :faint: . It was RIDICULOUS! My legs feel like jello. It's gonna' be a fun run tomorrow. :scared:

Some of the girls from my kickboxing class want to run the 5K with me. I'll never keep up with them...one runs an 8 min mile and the other a 10 min mile. UGH! I CANNOT get discouraged. I just have to do what I can do and be happy with that!!!

Yup!!! DH runs sub 9s when I'm not with him. Good for him. I can't do it. You're doing great!!! Reember that!

Now, I know that pace doesn't sound great, but I sustained it for 3.1 miles! Happy Dance!

Cam! That is awsome. :cheer2: Now I must say this in love  Stop apologizing for your pace!!!! It does sound great. It is great. This time last year you were scared to death of getting swept. Now your cruisin :moped: I'm so happy for you. Does it every get easier? The answer is yes/no! It never gets easier because you are always pushing for more. But OTH, if you do a 3 miler at your last year's pace, you'll be amazed at how easy it is. You should try it.

MelR-- I'm so sorry the Boy is still/again sick. This time of year is so hard. How do you make your mochas? They sound so yummy!

Lily-- Thank you for the scarfs! And thank DH for doing the cutting :goodvibes They were such a great way to spot WISHers.

Dave-- I hope the funds hold out to the 19th percentile :wizard: Its ok to post your downs. That's what we're here for :grouphug: Definitely get to the gym and try the ET. You'll be happy you did.

Sounds like athletic gear was the theme for Valentine's Day :rotfl2: I got a soft shell running jacket-- wind proof, water proof, breathable. Its awsome. I gave Dx a pair of Asics gt2100s!

Christa-- Happy B-day and happy new bike day, too! :cheer2:

Carrie & Judy-- Well it appears I don't get nearly the same functionality out of my kitchen floor as you guys :rotfl2: I'll have to work on that.

:cool1: :cool1: :cool1: :thumbsup2 :cheer2: Yeah, Heather! I'll keep an African elephant handy when your ready to press him!!!!

Guess what! I'm afraid to go into the "real" weight room at the Y!!!!! The FitLinxx and other nautilus equipment is in the main cardio room. Then there's The Weight Room off by itself where giant he-men work out. I've never seen a woman go in there. But the "real" leg press is in there, so I'm working on mustering up my courage to go in one day.

Today I did speed work. It was really hard, probably because I did lower body weights yesterday.

miles/speed: (0.5% incline)

0.5 5.8/6.0
0.6 7.5
0.4 6.0
0.5 7.5
0.1 6.0
0.4 4.0
1.0 7.0 (7.0 was remarkable easier than 7.5!)
0.5 6.0
0.25 4.0
0.25 7.5
0.10 7.0
1.0 6.0
5.8=>5.5=>4.0 cool down

Total miles = 6.0

Sunny

AmyBeth-- I ran a 5k with my super speedy friend last year. She runs a 7:10, she was finished, stretched are re-nurished long before I saw the finish line! Its all good, though :goodvibes You'll have a great time. Don't worry about the difference in pace!

It's funny that someone should mention thinking of other WISHers during the day. On Sunday I ran on the trail in our community. There is a farm with horses across the path, and the horses were out enjoying the sunshine. I thought of Judy and wondered about Mist. :)

I am trying to figure out a plan for training for the Goofy. If I can come up with a good plan, then I would be more willing to sign up for it. I have only done 2 1/2 marathons in my life (2005 and 2006) and no marathons. I am currently signed up for the 2007 marathon & the DL 1/2 in September. My plan for the full marathon and the DL 1/2 marathon is to try run3/walk 2. I did that for 2 miles this weekend, and I was exhausted! So, if I want to go Goofy, should I switch to all walking and try to walk at a faster pace over time, which is less stressful on the body? Or should I stay with walk3/run2, which carried me through the 1/2 marathon with no problem? Or, should I train with a goal of walking the 1/2 and walk/run the marathon? Or, should I train with a goal of walking the 1/2 and run/walk the marathon? Or, should I train with a goal of walk/running the 1/2 and then run/walking the full? :confused3 If I decide to go goofy, I know that I need a strategy now because it will take me 10 months to prepare mentally & physically.

Heather! You sweet thing! Just about the time you were watching the horses enjoying the sun on Sunday....we were getting buried under 30" of snow! :cold: But thank you so much for thinking of us.

Thank GOODNESS we have a treadmill!! (DH and I, not Mist and I) :lmao:

Dave, Dena, AmyBeth - remember, if we take it slow and stay injury free, next year at this time we will be talking about our race experiences too!

:offtopic:

I am flying to Philadelphia in a few weeks and need suggestions for a saturday afternoon activity.

It will be my ds 4, ds 2, and me. I want them to run off some steam before the hour drive to my brothers house.

Any ideas?

Maggie

Hi all - Mel don't worry about friends waiting for you post race. I'm one of the slowest runners of our group and everyone's so busy rehydrating, picking up their gears bags, queuing for the bathroom, lying on the floor asking why they did that again etc, they don't notice how long after them you come in.

Mind you I'm very glad my half on Sunday has a staggered start as I think I'm going to be taking closer to 3 hours than 2 this year - put down 2.30 but I think it's going to be more like 2.50-3.00 as I'm seriously not feeling ready. Will go one of two ways - will either flake at mile 10 and spend 3 miles swearing - or my body will remember it had been running 4 hours regularly not so long ago and I'll feel fine.

Am having fat day today - have managed to gain 3lbs in a week while starting my new healthy eating regime!!! I've decided there's something very wrong with my body- I come to Florida, eat junk, lose weight. I come back here, cut down to one carb meal a day, ban chocolate, eat my veggies - and gain weight!!! My allergies have also kicked up so I'm thinking I must eat something here that messes with my system - oh well maybe it's finally time for a trip to the allergy clinic. I am getting bored with permanently sniffing anyway - and if it's making me fat too........

Do you have the feeling I'm a bit down at the moment. I never had weight problems till I moved here but now it seems every day is spent fighting a losing battle - and that combined with the fact that I still can't get back into enjoying my running is now very dull - grrrrrrrrr!!!

Anyway, glad to see everyone else is doing so well, just ignore my whining, I'll snap out of it soon.... Helen

Sunny - I make my mochas by putting as much hot choc mix as i would if i were making a cup of instant HC, adding a little creamer and mixing it w/ my coffee. They are quite yummy. I usually use fat free creamer but the only fat free hc mix was ovaltine and i didn't like the vitamin taste. I need to take your advice to cam and stop apologizing for my pace. I always feel like i have to berate my pace with fast runners! I was actually making apologies on the 50k course to people who passed me. Some of them were doing the 25k only. I had someone ask me how the "disney thing went" it was a fellow adventure racer and someone who qualified for boston w/ his 1st marathon. I said "i finished it, i didn't do good, but i did it" Shame on me!!! My answer should have been "great" b/c that is how the disney thing went!!

Amy - my running partner is way faster than me. she actually wins or places in her age gp in most races then comes back to get me on the course!!! I used to feel like a charity partner, but we are pretty equally matched at biking, mt. biking, climbing and adventure racing (and i could beat her down at martial arts!!!) Anyway, i have gotten to the point where i actually look forward to her coming back to get me so i have someone to run it in with. She told me she won't do it at our next marathon (oops training run), but when we run hogeye marathon (training run) she is going to do the half-mar to compete, then turn around and come to finishe the marathon w/ me. :goodvibes

Christa - now you are going to have to post a before and after bike pic!!!

Helen - sorry about your fat day!! I was reading your post and thinking of Bridgitte Jones!!! :rotfl2: Thanks for the encouragement about friends not noticing how much longer anyway. I often forget that my friends who are running aren't actually spending the entire race wondering about MY time!!!! Loosers, they should be!! :teeth: :confused3 :lmao:

MelR-- I have to take my own advice, too. I find when people ask me how the marathon went I say "great, but my time wasn't too good...".

So let's all just be great from now on :rotfl2: :cool1: :thumbsup2 :woohoo:

Helen-- I vote for option #2. Judy's knees did enough swearing around here! You'll do great, I just know it :cheer2: If something is triggering an allergic reaction you could be bloated from water retention. I hope you get relief soon :wizard:

Oops, I'm not supposed to be here right now

I am trying to figure out a plan for training for the Goofy. If I can come up with a good plan, then I would be more willing to sign up for it. Heather - the answer to your question is "yes" Sorry, I couldn't resist!! Just sign up!! You don't need to figure out the training plan yet. It will reveal itself as you start to do the back to back LR's!! You can do goofy though!!

Sunny! What were you doing here??? Shouldn't you be working????

And I'll have you know my knees stopped swearing when I got new running shoes.

:lmao:

I just called Disney Sports about their marathon weekend "packages". It's room only and a round of minature golf. Well, ummm.....okaaaay. He quoted me a rate of $538.56 for three nights at any moderate (non-designated room). $485.04 for standard.

:confused3

OK, am I dumb here? Where's the savings???
