Wk of Feb 12--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Hi Gang!!!

Just dropping in to say a very quick "HI" to all of you. I'm on vacation...up in the now frozen tundra of northern Vermont. I will be skiing in the sub-zero temps the next few days (UGH) so at least I'll be burning calories if not getting a super workout. Wish the weather was going to be better...but I always feel great after braving the elements all day. It make us tougher LOL!

I hope you all have a great long weekend! Keep up the good work, everyone is just rockin' and rollin'!

Quick question....do you guys think I shy do a 1/2 marathon in the fall or is that too close to the full? Trying to figure out a nice goal to help me train thru the hot summer months....I might need some inspiration ;). Or maybe just a 10K will do? I'd love your advice! I'm running a 5K event in April. If you could help me figure out an optimal "race schedule" before the full at WDW that would be a HUGE help!

Also, I think I've decided to train w/ Bingham's Full-Run plan BUT I may throw 60 sec. walk breaks in every 10 minutes. DOes that sound feasable? Thanks!

Amy - The full run with the 60 seconds every 10 minutes should eb very do-able. I think that's what CHrista and Bree do.

Look at the plan (what runs fall when) and see if the half would be close to on the plan. I fit does, you should be fine. Just don't over0exert yourself on it.

Have a great weekend everyone!!!!

Amy

A half in the fall is not only okay, more like mandatory if you're doing a full marathon on January 7, 2007. Treat it like a training run, especially if it is your first effort at 13 miles. If it's early in the fall you'd be building up to the full. If it's later in the fall, then it could be a "trial" to see what your body is capable of doing.

Today I booked a room for the marathon. Checking in on Saturday, January 6 and checking out right after the race. I've also had a pretty nice week of training so far, so hopefully I'm all set to build for a good effort on January 7.

Good training all.

Ugh! For the past couple days I've been slacking!! :guilty: I missed the gym last night because the DH wanted to go out to dinner (something he RARELY wants to do, so I was a bit taken aback by his spontaneity!) Then today I had a terrible migraine and didn't do anything either! To my credit though, I took a boot camp class on Wednesday and I am still sore like no other! But beside that, I am in a bit of a slump fitness and food wise and I need someone to yell at me, LOL! I am still in the "training to train" mode for the 1/2 so I can't afford these little slip ups. I know they happen and I should move on and stop beating myself up for it, but I guess I needed to vent! Thanks for listening ya'll :grouphug:

Feel free to yell at me, it'll probably help! LOL

Lily, really? 55 years old?? You look at least 10 years younger than that. Whatever you are doing it is working! ::yes:: You look great! :cool2:

I was so unmotivated this week. Did nothing Wednesday and Thursday and finally today I got myself to the gym for some speed work.

1 mile at 6.0
.5 at 7.0
.1 at 3.8 (walk)
.4 at 6.0
.5 at 7.0
.1 walk
.4 at 6.0
.5 at 7.5
.5 at 6.0
.5 walk

I have to say this 4.5 miles today was so much easier than my slow 6 miles on Tuesday. It is so funny how your body decides to perform or not. :scratchin

DH is out buying a new big screen TV tonight with the kids. We don't watch much television and the one we have I purchased my first year of university, so I guess we are due for an upgrade. :teeth:

I would rather have a treadmill, but oh well, boys and their toys!

Christiana

Christiana, no yelling here because I just went through the same 2 days you did. That happens, I know you will get out there tomorrow! :wizard: Good luck and come back and tell us how it went!!

Here goes, rolling up my sleeves and really meaning it.

Christiana, let the past go. Get on with what you are able to do. You are correct, training to train is the best thing you can do for yourself right now. So, this weekend just do what you can, but try to do something. That boot camp probably really kicked your booty and your body is in need of that breather. Now you've breathed, get back to something you don't have to be heavy at it exactly, just make a step. There are going to be many days that we don't feel like it. Some of those are just put one foot in front of the other and manage what you can. You are going to do this, and you will succeed!

Colleen, you too will have those unmotivated times. Times like this will happen, do what you can and try to do something.

Thanks for that comment back about my age. My hairdresser keeps me looking way better than I feel some days. The reality is what it is inside. I just keep doing what I can, putting one foot in front of the other. Some days are better than others. I am certainly clinging to the "I won't grow up" theme as much as I can though.
:teeth:

I need to take my own advice. I've got a slow start back. I'm thinking that I've got a better mental handle on it. I've just got to get through this weekend.

Amy, I think like the others have replied. You've got it spot on. Grab that calendar and plot out your training schedule. Once you've got your schedule figured...you should be really close with that half. Stay warm, have fun this weekend.

Craig, Yay for the room ressie. Leaving right after the race! :worship: I'd have a difficult time walking away from that place. (I guess I always do)

Hearing everyone making their ressies has me a bit sad b/c right now it does not look like I will be able to play in January. I'll be right there with you as you go though, pushing you along if you need.

Hi guys - am sitting at my computer hydrating for my half tomorrow - I'm so used to sitting here all day drinking from a bottle of water that it just seems natural for me to guzzle while I type - just gone through half a litre reading everyone's posts!

So, so far this year we've had the pitbulls and the skunk, last year I seem to recall around now we'd had (mel's?) gator, my elephant and Lynn's goat - I'm seeing a theme.

Amy: yes you can most definitely work in a half before the full, as Craig said (hi Craig, still sad didn't get to meet you) it's actually a really good idea as it helps you learn how to pace yourself in a race, decide if you can run and drink at the same time, test out carrying stuff. Also, don't be afraid to jiggle your training schedule around it a bit - I did one last year on October 31st which was supposed to be my 15 mile day, so I did my 15 the week before, ran the half, then had a rest week (just the 10 miles!!!!) before I went up to 16 miles. By that point, so long as you don't do anything daft (ie run 15 miles when you've only done 8 before or something) you have enough base for a bit of leeway.

The ice cream is still uneaten and it's going to stay that way (noooooo, I can hear the Mr Whippy man in the road in front of me - thankfully I'd have to vault three fences to get down to him!) - will check in Monday and tell you all how it went tomorrow. I still can't decide whether to start 2.30 hrs before designated finish time and go for it a bit, or 2.45 before and give myself some leeway. My PB for this course is 2.24, last year was 2.33, but it was a stonker of a run last year and I think it's currently even hotter than it was then. Oh well, I'll find out in a few hours - see you at the finish line...... Helen

Always seems like so much to catch up on.

Minnie - PD for your MRI, I hope it is nothing but good news

Dena - loved the journal, I am always amazed at people who are so organized. I think I still have pictures from 3 years ago somewhere.

Jody - I love my PT, he is working my muscles so hard. I am hoping it will make recovery time so much faster.

Heather - I so agree on the ID, I wear a bracelet with all my info. It is so important if you have any medical issues.

Amy - my Dr, who is a marathoner, has helped me lay out an event/race schedule and it includes the 1/2 in DL in September so go for it.

Helen - :cheer2: :cheer2: Hope your 1/2 is your best yet!

I finally got the ok to start back slowly on a wog, no long running yet but hopefully by next week I will be pain free for more than 4 miles. It always seems to kick in at that point.

I am really bummed since I started training I have gained 4 lbs, I know it is muscle conversion but it is so hard to see that scale rise. Any suggestions on how to jog it in the other direction?

Ok, another resort question. We were thinking of staying at Swan/Dolphin. Does anyone know do busses run from those resorts or will I have to figure on a walk to BW or YC/BC? What would you consider a cut off for ressies, we are having a resort debate here?

Morning Everyone,

Well, today is my first time back with my trainer - she's going to help me with the training for the marathon (here and there), give me to tips and help make me even stronger.....I really need to work my core muscles - I don't think they are nearly strong enough.

Today, I also hope to stop by a sporting goods store - see if I can get some running clothes. Next week, I hope to join the running club people in my first run with them.

Amy I agree with the others....running a half is a great idea - I hope to complete one in June. I'm holding off on registering for right now (want to see how my training is in early May), worst case if I don't do that one.....there is another one in October.

Have a great day everyone!

To second and third everyone...a 1/2 is a great addition to your training. I did a full in december then the Goofy and was fine. You can even change the schedule around a little bit to make the 1/2 work. GOOD LUCK!
Your race plan sounds good. I did 7:1 my first race, 10:1 my second, and the last 2 I ran to the mile markers/water stations.

Back from my training session - had a great time. My trainer said that as long as I keep up with what I am doing.....I should be fine for the Disney Marathon :thumbsup2 ! and I was right, I really need to work my core a little bit more.

Todays, workout was an overall body workout, which hit most of the core muscles.

I also asked my trainer what is the correct week for me to start in to in with the Non-Marathon trainer program, mostly because I really pulled back a lot and didn't do as much and was really bored with my workout.....She said that I pulled back a little too much - So I am now starting with the first week in that book rather than the prep work.

I still have to do my running for today - next week I hope to start running with the running club on Saturday. Today, after my session I went to Dick's sporting good store and bought a couple of running outfits (thanks for whoever suggested running out and looking at the sports stores for their clearance or marked down items) I got some good discounts....still expensive but not nearly as bad as full price.

So I know some others on the board have already reserved rooms for marathon weekend - where is everyone staying. I'm staying at POFQ. I really love it there :cloud9: .

Well have a great weekend everyone!

Jodi

P.S. - When I go running I will try and update this post or create a new one to let you know how I did.

We stayed at the Swan for my marathon. They actually had a RUN marathon code out for $169 marathon weekend. I heard about it in August or September last year. I booked it and then tried to add the Thursday night was disappointed because they weren't offering it that night, and then I asked out the Teachers discount and got a rate of $165 per night our entire stay.

There were buses going to the expo and to the race start continuously. We never had to wait at all, there was always one waiting. We did stop at BW, BC, and YC.

Good luck with your decision.

Colleen

Colleen, thanks for the info. Good to know about the rate, I do get Government/Military but sometimes it is unavailable, I will make sure to ask.

Still pushing for Swan/Dolphin, I want a heavenly bed after Goofy:)

Hey guys! Hope everyone is having a great weekend. I'll post more later, but I know a few of you were wanting to see what the shadowbox that we made for the marathon medals looks like. Well, here it is. Talk to you guys later!

Krista, Love the shadowbox. Is that a poster in the middle or a print? Where did you get it?

MickeySP, yes the heavenly beds were great. We always book at the Swan for the queens.

Krista -- The shadowbox is gorgeous! How exciting to have that reminder of your awesome accomplishments!

Hi, everyone! At work today and not much to report. Did 3 miles this morning at 41:58. Pretty slow but I really felt like I was dragging.

I realized this morning that I am now "training to train" pretty regularly at least 5x/week: 2 weight training sessions; 2 treadmill wogs; and 1 other of either bike or elliptical or a yoga/pilates class. I was beyond shocked to realize the extent and enormity of my commitment. I love being a part of this community that supports that commitment and where everyone understands what it's all about.

Enjoy the day, guys! Heading home soon to enjoy my family and maybe dinner with some friends. :grouphug:

Cam: Great job with your training! Sounds like you are really doing awesome. Will you continue to XT w/ pilates, yoga, etc once you start your marathon training? I was hoping to continue doing my XT twice per week once I get to that point.

Krista: The shadowbox is soooo great. Thanks for sharing :).

Jodi: Sounds like the trainer is going to be great!! Core work is essential for any sport...you are definitely on the right track. I noticed a huge difference today in my skiing since I've been doing loads of core work in my classes. It really seems to help my balance and posture on the skiis....I'm sure it does the same for running, thus preventing injuries. Way to go!!!

As far as where we're staying, I booked BWV for Saturday thru Wednesday. I think we're staying near the airport on Friday night since we get in late!

AND a huge thanks to everyone for giving me GREAT feedback about running a half before the full. I did a bit a research and found a really great half in Philly in September. I would LOVE to run the Disneyland half but there is no way I'll make it out to California in the fall :(. But Philly is definitely possible and the course sounds really great! Is anybody running that one?

Well...gotta go. I'm freezing my butt off up here in Vermont. The windchills at the summit today were outrageous. Burning tons of calories trying to stay warm. But as I was driving back to the condo and it was a frigid 1 degree F., I saw a woman running. I was soooo impressed....and strangely enough I wished I had brought my sneakers. Whoever she was....WAY TO GO GIRL!!!!

Krista- the shadowbox is very neat.
Cam- Aliens, I tell you.

I had an alien encounter of my own today. I went out and ran 10 miles. Okay, I did 13 last week so why was today's 10 special? It was 20 degrees with 30+ mph winds(I thought they were 20 mph when I headed out, found out otherwise when I got back). As I was doing it, I was questioning why. "I'm still in the season prep stage and not really training for a race yet, I could have skipped it" was the justification running through my mind. I ended up deciding it was about putting in the steps and even though today was a challenge, I'll have the miles in the bank when it comes time to draw on that mentally.
BTW, that not really training for a race thing, that must be some sort of mental block or something because the Boston Run to Remember Half Marathon is 3 weeks from tomorrow. Something's off(aliens?) when a half marathon is just another training day distance wise.

Weighing in on the resort debate- stayed at POR this year on AP rate(so I booked about 3 months out) and loved being able to walk to the start of the full. I very much appreciated the extra sleep, flush toilets, etc. However, I noticed that the start is actually right across from the entrance to OKW so... I'm waiting for the 7 month booking window to get something at OKW for the upcoming year. True, if it's not Hospitality House end of OKW it can be a quite a ways.

Helen- race report please!!!

I do not think I mentioned it here before but some of you may have seen our sad news on another thread. DH's Mom passed away fairly unexpectedly last Mon after a short illness. She was 89 but still living independently and yes, even driving right to the end. She did go quickly which, for the active woman she was I consider a blessing. We have been in Brooklyn all week for the funeral. Training has been somewhat off this week, but not completely gone. What I have been able to do has provided a great deal of stress relief. We head back home to FL tomorrow. Can't wait to get back in warmer temps! It is really cold and windy here tonight!

Edited to add that I have come down with a nasty cold while here.

I will have to catch up with everyone's posts after I get home.
