Why do people feel good when they report posts?

I'll worry about it when people learn what the word bullying means. And since this thread is about behavior on a message board, I'd say never. Don't like what some one says? Get off the computer, no one has to be here.

Stop that logic stuff!

I've only reported spam. But, someone not only reported me, they told me they did. They said I called them a name. Nope, I didn't. I used the words "sad" and "pathetic". But what I said was basically that they didn't trust anyone and that was sad and pathetic. I got no points, but the thread was locked for review and never reopened. :rotfl:

I do not get the way people take words from strangers personally. BTW, anyone who thinks everyone who gets points deserves them needs to remember that mods are humans and have their own personal opinions.

Kind of reminds me of the football story I heard today. After a football game where one team won 91-0, a parent on the losing team said the winning team was "bullying" them even though the winning team pulled their starters and played their less than best players. Seriously?

I report the spam posters.

The fake id ones, etc.

I haven't run across (personally) any of the posts where people are getting offensive or what have you, just find them after the fact sometimes.

1. People take the interwebs way too seriously.
2. Because of 1. they think a scolding from the mods and points sullying their anonymous screen name will cause people to not say what they think and spout nothing but rainbows and pixie dust.

For the most part, moderators try to not hand out points. We get lots of posts reported to us...it's amazing what people will report. I've had people tell me to get rid of a thread because posters were mean and not helpful. But in reality? The OP just didn't care for the responses they got! No one was mean. On the other hand, some posters just can't play nicely, within board guidelines. They go off on a tangent about a particular poster. So sure, they tend to get reported. And if they have violated those guidelines, get awarded points.
Most mods try not to be heavy handed. But we want posters to feel comfortable posting on the DIS. They shouldn't have to worry about getting harassed or insulted. Most posters that get infraction points know they were threading on thin ice...so don't have a huge issue. We just want things to be civil. You don't have to agree with everyone but you do have to be civil

threading on thin ice :teeth:

And one could respond to this just as easily with a Can't follow the rules and don't like getting points? Get off the computer. No one has to be here.

Perhaps some people get points that they didn't quite deserve. But let us not pretend that they're getting points out of the blue for sunshine, lollypops and rainbows either. When someone walks right up to the line and waives their foot over it without stepping down, some mods are going to interpret that as crossing the line. Some aren't.

Where does verbal bullying fall into the above equation?

When I say something you don't like to hear, in a forum and you tell me to stop or you'll report me for 'verbal bullying'.

If someone starts a thread about "name a weird food you have eaten", I'm allowed to talk about the dog-meat restaurants in China and Korea I actually took a liking to.

If you tell me you don't want to hear that I preferred braised pug over the more affordable St. Bernard stew, that doesn't mean I'm bullying you if I continue with the cuisine conversation.

And yet, that's just what I come to expect anymore.

I'm going to hell for laughing at this aren't I?

I agree. Takes all kinds to make the world go 'round.

Bullying is an overused word/idea. Yes it can be a real problem but not as often as claimed.
