Why do people feel good when they report posts?

I've never reported a post and don't see myself doing so in the immediate future. I always find it hilarious that people actually get offended when anonymous DIS members don't agree with them.

I know it's weird, but strangers on the internet aren't offensive to me. He'll someone said something downright nasty to me once and everyone else told them it was out of line (which was appreciated) and I just kind of giggled, 'well alllllllrighty then.'

I am on the receiving end of the reports.
I think the scary ones are members who report and say they are being stalked on the Internet. I hand those over to the webmasters. I have seen some very complicated reported posts explaining the stalking, and I am like "what?" so thank goodness to The DIS administration, their job is not easy.

I replied in a thread today and know for sure who reported me. It is actually kind of funny considering what the topic of the thread is about. Hope that person feels good about reporting me....I find it humorous actually.
...

I've been reported too, made me :lmao:

It simply was a reply to someone's comment on my post that people do support about Unions. I simply stated a fact that people in Wisconsin did vote in favor of their Governor when he took a stand against them there... immediately reported for political reason by someone. :rolleyes1

Yes, Unions are very powerful. ::yes::

I report spam but have never reported a "mean" post. That said, I've been reported 2x and have received infractions. Both infractions have truly been quite ridiculous based on the other posts that were in the thread.

I was reported for making a "sarcastic remark." As if the DIS never sees those... ;)

:upsidedow I know! I got reported because I told someone I thought it was childish to whine. I don't get to decide who gets warnings, but I really thought I was easy in comparison to some of what gets posted here. Oh well, :confused3

I have not reported posts, but I have wondered why certain posts were not deleted and certain users are not banned.

I have had to report a poster once, but it was a pretty vicious post and while I dd not feel good about it, I did not feel it was something I could just pass over. I have also reported a few threads that had pornography on them, but I don't think this is what you meant.

I think that if you post on a message board you should be prepared to have folks reply, and you may not like the replies. I also think that if you are on a message board, you should pass over threads that you feel you may be offended by. A post would really need to be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over the line for me to report it.

(bolding is mine) I 100% agree. There is a difference between disagreeing with someone's opinion, and being nasty and rude to them about those opinions. Some people don't know the difference.

In a thread in which someone was being nauseatingly sycophantic I posted, in quotation marks, "have to be the teacher's pig, eh, Pumba?"
This was reported and punished.
So much for being a Disney forum!

How do you know whether your post is reported or if a moderator was keeping an eye on a thread?

I've only reported obvious spam. I have had posts deleted and points applied, but I had assumed a moderator was simply monitoring the thread.

Even if a post is reported, that doesn't mean a mod has to take action, right? Yes, they should investigate, but doesn't mean the post has to go "poof" just because of a report, right?

I've reported blatant inflammatory posts, or the first post of a thread that's obviously about a banned topic, but I don't think any of them was ever in reply to me or about me.

And I don't feel good about it. Expect reporting spam. I feel good about that.

I have never reported a post, and I don't expect that I ever will. I am not offended by anything anyone says here and I prefer less policing, not more. I figure that we are all adults and are here voluntarily. I don't understand when adults can't handle comments made on the internet. :confused3

I've gotten PLENTY of points over the years...but there is no way of knowing how I got them. No way of knowing if I had been reported or if a mod saw it on their own.

In almost every case I totally earned the points. Own your posts. If the powers that be deem it innapropriate or a violation of board rules and regs then it is what it is. Their sandbox and all....

I don't know if people feel good, but presumably if the complaint is upheld, then you have violated some part of the board rules.

It's not even as if reporting someone for a single post is a big thing (unless the post was totally outrageous), so it's not like they are getting the "satisfaction " of you disappearing off the boards, but again, if you have a constant stream of low level complaints against you, maybe you should consider what you are posting?

DOI: I work in healthcare, and have a very dark sense of humour, but this board here is not the place for jokes about death etc, and I can't imagine getting worked up enough to get into a fight on the internet with some random person.

It sort of reminds me of this:

People around here get their feelings hurt way too easily

That's what I'm thinking!!! Yes, I am careful what I say and try not to offend anyone but some people take things way too personal!!!!

People like to be tattle-tales or rats or snitches or whatever you want to call it because they grew up in an environment where that's okay. For instance, the neighbor who calls the cops on a noise complaint instead of just respectfully talking to you themselves. You see a lot of this in suburban neighborhoods...believe me, I know...I grew up in Long Island. People must learn to deal with their own problems instead of telling on everyone else and getting them in trouble.
