Why do people feel good when they report posts?

I replied in a thread today and know for sure who reported me. It is actually kind of funny considering what the topic of the thread is about. Hope that person feels good about reporting me....I find it humorous actually.

So have you ever reported a reply to a post you made where you felt you were getting picked on, bullied or called a name???
I admit I have reported a couple of threads only where it was the obvious spam type post....
Figure here we are all adults and don't need to go tattle when someone is mean to us but ..... guess not.

I haven't... But I feel you on this ;)

I will report a post that goes against the posting guidelines. I figure, we are all expected to read them and agree to them. 99.9% is has nothing to do with me but either spam, selling, or people attacking others.

'cause it's the Interwebs and people are buttheads:rotfl2:

How do you know it was reported and it wasn't a moderator keeping an eye on the posts today? I jave seen posts like this and wonder why people think they know something definitive about who got points, how they got points, and why they got points. I wouldn't worry about it either way. If someone did report it, they aren't worth worrying about. It's probably someone who likes to be controversial and looks for attention but can't take the heat.

No, I haven't specifically reported a post, or poster for coming at me, but I have once for a reply to someone else that crossed the line. Waaaaaaay over the line. Like into Canada that's how far the line was crossed.

I wouldn't let it irk you OP :goodvibes

I readily admit that I don't police what I say very well. Some would say that's part of my charm. Actually ... no one says that. Generally speaking I am careful to avoid directing any comments at a fellow forum dweller with the exception of requested constructive critisism.

Anyway, I've skirted that suspension line pretty close and for a good long run; meaning I have probably had posts reported more than most people. Most of the time I chaulk it up as part of the game. I cross the line, get my fingers slapped, get some points, and I make a good faith effort to try harder.

Sometimes though it seems really odd what gets reported and what doesn't. Like someone complains about being stuck with the ashes of a relative they never liked and they don't know what to do with it, so I helpfully point out that cajun cooking achieves brilliant success with blackened preparations of fish and chicken. Sure it was a tongue in cheek remark but it's no worse than some of the well intentioned advice.

Long story - short ... it's hit and miss what rings the bell. Do your best to not be a jerk and if that's not good enough for some people then you just have to let that go.

never reported a post, nor would it ever cross my mind to do so

Yep, this is my thoughts exactly!

Eh, I haven't ever considered reporting something unless it was spam. And then it was only a thought without follow through, lol.

This thread will probably disappear since this sort of thing is frowned upon, but I'll take a shot at replying anyway.

Yes, I've reported posts besides spam threads. In the olden days when religion was not a taboo subject around here, there was a very nasty post about a certain religion. It was wrong, vile & I reported it. It didn't make me feel good but I felt I had to do it.

Fortunately I haven't seen anything on the DIS worth reporting but on my local newspaper comments section I've reported dozens of posts, most of them by trolls that have nothing better to do than make racist, sexist, repulsive, anti-religion, anti-political party, or any other hot button subject to start fights online.

The DIS is very civilized and respectful compared to the rest of the internet.

This. I see blatant racism and sexism at a few other sites, especially in the comments sections of some news sites. The Dis is a nice place. There are a few people who seem like they're trolling, but I avoid their threads. No need to report.

Do people feel good when they report posts? I wouldn't really know. I usually report if a person is spamming with those annoying ads.

Now about a poster reporting a post that they personally disagreed with...that's just passive aggressive. Don't get me wrong if a post was overtly racist, troll-worthy,sexist or just plain hateful then I understand but if it is for anything petty...that is just weird.

Nope, I've never reported a post where I was being made fun of. I have developed a pretty thick skin here. :) And I just consider what type of person they are when they are posting not-so-nice things about me.

I did report a post, once. It was in the "Survivor: No Spoilers" thread a couple years or so ago. Someone posted spoilers, so I reported it so it could be removed, and it was. It didn't make me "feel good" to report them, but when a thread says "no spoilers" it's not very nice to post them.

I only report spam

:rotfl2: That's because it's so filtered.

I report spam but have never reported a "mean" post. That said, I've been reported 2x and have received infractions. Both infractions have truly been quite ridiculous based on the other posts that were in the thread.

I was reported for making a "sarcastic remark." As if the DIS never sees those... ;)

I have had to report a poster once, but it was a pretty vicious post and while I dd not feel good about it, I did not feel it was something I could just pass over. I have also reported a few threads that had pornography on them, but I don't think this is what you meant.

I think that if you post on a message board you should be prepared to have folks reply, and you may not like the replies. I also think that if you are on a message board, you should pass over threads that you feel you may be offended by. A post would really need to be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over the line for me to report it.

It would have to be some thing really offensive.
Personally, I just try to remember this is strictly a volunteer activity for me. If things get to heated or nasty, I disconnect. Also I make use of the "ignore" feature. It's a wonderful tool.
