Why do people feel good when they report posts?

I got a solution, make two community boards , one board make it imposable to report a post , and on the other board have everyone go that likes to tell on each other :smokin:

Lol, the Snitch and witch boards.

Way back in the day, before the internets were Al-vented, we had BBS message boards. Invariably someone would petition for a 'flame' board where participants could engage each other without risk of any sanctions or consequences. Lot of hurt feelings and foul language.

So of course this is the model 90% of the internet runs on these days.

I would never report a post. I do feel the moderators should just moderate and not become part of debates. I have noticed certain moderators like to become part of the bullying. It's much easier to get reprimanded on a message board if the moderator doesn't agree with your point of view.

How do you know whether your post is reported or if a moderator was keeping an eye on a thread?

I've only reported obvious spam. I have had posts deleted and points applied, but I had assumed a moderator was simply monitoring the thread.

Even if a post is reported, that doesn't mean a mod has to take action, right? Yes, they should investigate, but doesn't mean the post has to go "poof" just because of a report, right?

I was reported 5 years ago, and shocked as can be when I saw it. I knew that I was reported because the person who reported me sent me a PM telling me that they reported me. They baited me, and I stupidly responded. :headache: It cost me, but I served my time and have been a fairly good girl ever since. :goodvibes

I got reported for a thread on plants. Of all things. It was an actual kindergarten class that had grown cacti plants in their hand painted clown pots. The result was funny. Apparently it was also offensive to someone. Go figure. I own it, but I still think it was kinda silly.

never reported a post, nor would it ever cross my mind to do so

I've never reported a post and don't see myself doing so in the immediate future. I always find it hilarious that people actually get offended when anonymous DIS members don't agree with them.

I know it's weird, but strangers on the internet aren't offensive to me. He'll someone said something downright nasty to me once and everyone else told them it was out of line (which was appreciated) and I just kind of giggled, 'well alllllllrighty then.'

:thumbsup2 Same here. I would just think "what a moron" and move on...

People around here get their feelings hurt way too easily

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

People like to be tattle-tales or rats or snitches or whatever you want to call it because they grew up in an environment where that's okay. For instance, the neighbor who calls the cops on a noise complaint instead of just respectfully talking to you themselves. You see a lot of this in suburban neighborhoods...believe me, I know...I grew up in Long Island. People must learn to deal with their own problems instead of telling on everyone else and getting them in trouble.

I have never known as many people that are tattle tales as there are on these boards!

Snitches get stitches

That is still a saying at my job! The one thing you don't do is snitch, you will be forced to leave that job location (we have the option of moving to various locations every couple of months) and work at another if you rat out co-workers.

I see where you're going with it but chances are it wouldn't be satisfying for too many for too long. There is a certain travel-related chat site that did exactly that; opened a "wild-west" type forum separate from the rest of their topical ones. It initially served the purpose for sure - members were able to be as aggressive and abrasive as they wanted - the whole point was to stir the pot and keep arguments going. But it fairly quickly devolved into "gangs" of like minded posters visciously picking off the "weak" until there was basically no one left for them to disagree with anymore - not the lively, thoughtful discourse anyone had hoped for by any means. As of today, that board is lucky if it sees two posts a month and that's only the old cronies popping in to complain in bewilderment about the demise of their experiment...:scratchin

I've seen that on other boards as well as this one. I happen to be conservative and I've seen that end up with points because my opinion and others don't "jive" with the more liberal opinions. As I said earlier, people need to remember mods are humans and have their own opinions and biases and I've seen it.

The reality is people need to be grownups and not tattle because they just don't like what someone else said on a message board. We really don't want to live in a world where everyone agrees with everyone all the time. It's not a good thing for anyone.

Very true, especially here on the DIS and not just on Community either. I've been labeled some pretty interesting things based on my choice of hotels, not liking certain rides, the way I spend my money...heck, one poster got WAY up in my ideological grill because I don't do rope-drop...:rotfl2: There are some threads that one simply knows better than to participate in and THAT'S OK...maybe if so many people didn't feel the need (or think they had the ability) to "set straight" anybody who doesn't agree with them on a given topic, or if they stopped assuming they owe it to the world to tell us what they "know", conflicts would become fewer. Shrug and move on people!

Hate to burst your bubble, but I can assure you that it goes both ways. I've gotten points in threads for being political when the very titles of the threads were political (on the other side) and pretty much all of the posts were political, yet the threads were allowed to continue with only my posts bring removed. When I asked why, I was told that nobody reported the OP or the other posts that had the opposite viewpoint.

Oh, and in case you didn't know, I don't share the same viewpoint as you.

It's easy to get slammed on The Dis. Funny really. I got slammed once for buying my daughter and "H" belt buckle from Hermes. Amazing that anyone would care enough to even have something bad to say.

My worst Disbeating came from a thread on the Orlando Hotels board where I had the audacity to give a negative review of an offsite time/share place. People on that thread were so outraged, went thru all my old posts that had nothing to do with that thread to vilify me. Demanded that I be banned, etc.

I suspect they owned one of the timeshares at this place...,

I will report a post that goes against the posting guidelines. I figure, we are all expected to read them and agree to them. 99.9% is has nothing to do with me but either spam, selling, or people attacking others.

Really, people actually do that? I haven't been here very long and rarely drop in, but I can't recall seeing a single post worthy of tattling.

I know, right? :rotfl2: The most hilarious ones are the WWYD threads where when you actually post what you would do the OP (who asked in the first place) freaks as if you just barged into their livingroom and forced yourself into their personal life...If it's OK with you I'm going to add "Disbeating" to my lexicon...

Sure, and I've had plenty over the years. The worst are always the ones where you never even suspected your comment would outrage anyone.
