Why are people in love with the letter S?

I live in the south and people here love to add letters to words. At one time I lived in Illinois. Some of my extended family visited and really wanted to go to Chicargo. I had a cousin ask me how I liked living in Illinoise (her pronunciation). We have a school here that the name is spelled Lawhon. Everyone here pronounces it Lawhorn. We didn't move back here until I was in high school. For the longest, I thought that there were 2 schools with very similar names. Nope, people here just love to add the letters s and r to words.

the "s" is possesive implying store. I wouldn't say "I'm going to my mom." I would say "I'm going to my mom's".

Sure, if you are talking about the owner of something, a possessive would make sense.

But...would you say I'm going to the zoo's ??? Because that is silmilar to saying I am going to Boma's

Why do people put 'S' at the end of restaurant names when it does not belong?

Ohanas
Ohana's
Boma's
Bomas

It is OK for a restaurant not to end in S.

:rotfl2: Wow, I think this all the time but never said it!

Well if we are discussing annoying dining comments, it is "dining" not dinning, it does not have 2 n's.

I have to laugh at myself. . when I read that spelling, in my head I pronounce it the way it should be pronounced (dinning rhyming with "winning"):rotfl: As you know, it happens quite often when I'm on these boards, LOL!

Since some are making their Disboards pet peeves known...here is mine: Please, when you are writing long posts (reviews, trip reports, or anything) INDENT!!

It is hard to read a 100 word post with no indentions ;) Thank you for listening.

Lack of indentations don't bother me. It's the lack of paragraphs!! Give us some stopping and starting points please!

Akershus is pronounced acre-shoes. Correct?

I asked my server there once how to pronounce it, and she said it was "AK-er-SOOS". I repeated it back to her several times to make certain that I had it correct.

Of course, there might be slight differences in the way the Norweigian CMs pronounce it, depending on thier own dialect and accent. After all, ask a Bostonian, a Chicagoan, and a Texan how to pronouce "Boston", and you'll get three radically different pronounciations.

My ex :crazy2: used to drive me crazy when ordering at a restaurant. He would tell the waitress "I'll have your steak." or "I'll have your pasta dish.". When she left I would say to him "Next time get your own instead of ordering hers!". I hope you anal retentive guys approve of my grammar and punctuation on this thread. I'm sure you will make it known if you don't.pixiedust:

My personal pet peeves are the abbreviations. They don't make me as annoyed as "Ohana's" seems to do to some people, but I really doubt that everyone is so busy that they just don't have the time to type "I have a reservation to take my husband to Artist Point at Wilderness Lodge for our anniversary" instead of "I have ADR to take DH to AP at WL for OA."

Okay, I'll admit I made up the "OA" part. :) But honestly, sometimes I will sit here for 30 seconds or more wondering what the heck a particular abbreviation means. And when people start to string them together, I'm sunk.

I think that part of it comes from the fact that I get talked to in official Disney-speak by my partner (he is a Grand Gatherings reservations supervisor), which bears no resemblance to the shorthand which has been made up for this board.

For example:
Actual name: Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa
Official abbreviation is not: GF
Official abbreviation is: 1B (don't ask...the resort abbreviations are insane)
Cast member shorthand: "The Grand"
Derisive cast member nickname: "The Red Roof Inn"

The teacher told me the "s" also implies what is owned. Target's (store), Boma's (restaurant). If I said I'm going to Target, my friends would duck! I don't say I'm going to the zoo's because nothing else goes behind it loke store or restaurant.

Sooo, would you also say," I'm going to Tavern on the Green's (restaurant)"???

That's just's crazy's talk's MidgeD79's!

Target doesn't OWN the store - Target IS the store. It's a proper name. You only make it posessive if you are referring to something that the store posesses - Target's employees, Target's parking lot, Target's crappy merchandise, etc.

I say it too for some names. Sorry if it bugged you. I guess I say it the same way as I would say, "I'm going to Grandma's". As in, Grandma's house. Chef Mickey's restaurant.

One thing that annoys me though is when people use " 's " instead of the plural. Photo's, ticket's etc.. gets on my nerves.
That said, it does not keep me awake at night either.

Well what do you know... it IS Chef Mickey's

That teacher should be fired. Boma does not own the restaurant.

An Update:

CM's are in love with the letter 'S' too!

We just got back from a week long trip.

The famous Lipoa (sp?) welcomed us to 'Ohana's

The hostess at Jiko welcomed us to Jiko's

I've been waiting at Boma's for you since 2007. My feet are tired...where have you been? When can I expect to meet you?
love and hugs,
sss

What I want to know is why reservations are abbreviated as "ressie". It's like visual nails on a chalkboard. :confused3

The one that gets me is how people write "Citrico's". It's Citricos, no apostrophe, because the word is Spanish for Citrus.

No possession. It's not a restaurant belonging to a person named Citrico.
