Why are people in love with the letter S?

I second that!:thumbsup2 I am sure there are flaws in your grammar as well. This is somewhat petty.
Well, I think it's petty to point out that it's petty....

"Well, I think that people who complain about this have too much time on their hands"
(clearly, if we're all reading this, and posting to it, we ALL have too much time on our hands!)

" Well, I think that people who respond to complain about people who respond to complain about people who respond to complain are petty, AND have too much time on their hands".....

We can go on and on and on, folks. This li'l debate should go on the community boards, though, since it has nothing to do with restaurants. That way we can talk about our petty grievances to our hearts' delight.

Will, you are cracking me up. :rotfl2: You better stop while you are ahead.

Ya learn something new every day; I always thought it was an ordinary apostrphe

This made me laugh! My grandmother used to add an S to the end of everything...so Jewel (the local grocery store chain) became "Jewels", Kmart was "Kmarts", etc. We just rolled with it (along with some eye-rolling).

Since some are making their Disboards pet peeves known...here is mine: Please, when you are writing long posts (reviews, trip reports, or anything) INDENT!!

It is hard to read a 100 word post with no indentions ;) Thank you for listening.

Some people complain about everything.............type, read and be happy. It's all good! This isn't English Class, who really cares! I come here for the tips, not to be picky!

I listen to folks of all walks of life talk all day, every day, for my job, and adding an "S" to words is becoming more and more common. We have Lane Avenue and Dunn Avenue in our town, and more and more refer to it as Lanes Avenue and Dunns Avenue.

I also agree with the PP about paragraphing large posts. English classes aside, I'm sure everyone who posts something would like for it to be understood and read easily by others. When I see 40 to 100 sentences crammed together with no paragraphing, I just skip right over it. I just find it way too time-consuming to try and follow along. Same with posts that 'nish-cap every word. It gives me a headache to read those, so I don't.

I'm certainly not going to complain when a poster doesn't use a proper word (it's versus its) or uses incorrect grammar/punctuation, but I think it's important to remember we're all reading here, not speaking verbally. Any tips that would help readability of some posts is a good thing :)

The boards actually don't let you indent, but they will let you double-space.

I don't make a habit of criticizing spelling and grammar on the threads that have nothing to do with that as a topic (unless someone does something really funny). As long as I can understand what's being said, I let it all slide.

However, since this is a pet peeve thread, I'm not about to bash anyone for posting their peeves. I do, however, have one other VERY LARGE peeve...going onto a thread and insulting someone's grammar/spelling in order to make a point about their opinion or intelligence. That is just mean-spirited.

I do have peeves, as do many of us. I just try to confine the little buggers to the appropriate thread.

haha..now that I think about it my Nana says Targets instead of Target, Dunkins instead of Dunkin Donuts and a few more I am sure I can remember...Ah well, it doesn't phase me..I guess if they needed it for something proper (maybe writing in a complaint) they would be in need of the correction spelling, but here on the DIS there are many things that can annoy people. I bet I have done some crazy quirky things or said some that would warrant a thread of its own.

Yeah, some people even complain about other people complaining!

If you don't want to hear the stuff in this thread, skip the thread.

Skip these threads, let us complain, and be happy!

Ok, this is the first time I post about grammar or spelling but since that's what this thread is about, I'll go ahead and put my 2 cents in. First let me say I make mistakes too, especially when I'm posting late at night. But anyway, seeing 'Ohana written as O'hana drives me nuts! There, I said it and now I feel much better. 'Ohana is not an Irish restaurant.;)

I'll admit I am guilty of adding the "s" -- (and also guilty of making 'Ohana an Irish/Polynesian restaurant until I realized my mistake :rotfl2: ).

But is adding the "s" to a restaurant name really grammatically incorrect? I guess as one poster said -- we are using it like a name ... such as "I went to Mom's for dinner" - in reality we are saying "I went to Mom's house for dinner" -- we certainly wouldn't say "I went to Mom for dinner" (unless we were broke and hungry ... (ha ha!).

So when I say "I've been to 'Ohana's" ... it is as if 'Ohana was my mom ... which I guess is not correct! ... but in the end, if you know what I am saying ... I got the message across so who cares. (After all will we EVER not hear people say Cinderella's Castle????). Do we really care??

Off to read more dining threads and get hungry!

Yes, it is definitely incorrect.

In your Mom's house example, the noun representing the place you went to is house. Mom's is a possessive modifier providing more information about house.

In the 'Ohana case, 'Ohana is a proper noun representing the place you went. So making it possessive does not make any sense at all. It is incorrect.

I had to laugh because I had to edit a post on another thread - I used Fulton's instead of Fulton. You know I never even thought about that horrible "s"!!! And (too many) years ago, English was my minor! I realized it was wrong when I thought about it but I guess my mind says it is Fulton's Restaurant!!! (like a possessive!) I definately don't ever say "Target's" as in "I do my shopping at Target's" but very strange I would say "I ate at 'Ohana's."

You certainly opened up quite a lively thread "freshmanjs" -- and I will reluctantly try to break myself of using that "s"! :)

You were right the first time. It actually is Fulton's Crabhouse.

AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! :scared1: (LOUD SCREAMING!) - I am never mentioning a restaurant by name again! :teeth:

(except when I have a Harp at my ol pal's place O'hana's) HA HA

Yeah, it bothers me too but more importantly i thing freshmanjs is totally hot...can we meet up in wdw?
TIA
SSS

the "s" is possesive implying store. I wouldn't say "I'm going to my mom." I would say "I'm going to my mom's".
