I think you got a fair price. The average for the type of stones you're describing (depending on cut - the grade of the cut, not the shape) would be around $1000 - $1400 each, retail price. So if you paid $4500 for the ring you didn't do too bad.

You're right in thinking that $13000 or even $6000 would have been high and that the "sale" was more of a selling tactic.

And whoever said that diamonds are not investments was totally right. The important thing is that you love it, which you clearly do!!

The only thing you need now is to have it put on your homeowner's/renter's insurance...State Farm called it a "rider", Allstate calls it being "scheduled"...I believe you'll want to get "replacement value" insurance for it so it can be replaced fully (not just the money you paid for it).

YES.. get a rider for all of your jewels if you dont have one!!
My best friend recently lost her $8,000 heart shaped diamond engagement ring.... insurance was only going to give her 1,000 for it because of not having a rider.
