Who feels like a Thread-Killer? Part 2

:wave2: everyone!

Tried posting a few days ago, but the boards were too busy and it wouldn't take the post. Then yesterday I couldn't even get into the boards. And now when I went to type this it said I was "unregistered".

Quickly tried to catch up....Bp any word from DS tonight?
BP- I reconize that username.....which board is he from....does it start Raging.....

Robin- how's DD now?

Kim- Lauren was very much like your DD. (still is). We have her in a school that allows them to work at their own pace (Montessori  , type school) In grade 1 she did all grade 1s work and ALL of grade 2's, on and on she went so we added optional subjects at grade level to slow her down in grades 3 & 4 and now is only 6 months ahead of her grade level (5). The work does get tougher for them, which will challenge her.

Robin is right about the music thing. Teaching any child (gifted or those with learning problems) music helps develops areas of the brain that both challenges them and teaches them math & languages almost subliminally.

What's happing with HollyAnn....did she go to somewhere to get out of the way of "Frances"

Hollyann left Florida at the end of the week (maybe Thursday???) with her daughter and grandson to stay with a friend in Tennessee until Frances has passed through.

The men stayed at home in Florida to ride out the storm.

:wave: Ann, we miss you.::yes::

LOVE IT WENDY!!! THANK YOU!!!

Thanks everyone for the 'smarty-britches' advice. ;) Ya know, last summer before she entered Kindergarten, while she was learning to read, I seriously considered having her take private piano lessons (just for something to do), but I backed off, because of the reading. I really want to thank you tho, because next time I won't back off!

And truthfully, (confesion-vent time here), I have NEVER considered DD to be 'gifted', I only just heard that 'term' Friday from her NEW to the school-new to the kids, NEW teacher. DD just absorbs everything, quickly and easily. I'm also not a braggart by any means. (I'm flushed just typing this.) This is ALL new to me, as I stated before...my DS is completely opposite, learning-wise, but he's SOOO diligent and responsible and concerned about his grades, that I've never really been worried. He's always done his best. DD is just different from him.

And now, the venting about past comments, I mentioned before.....(you don't have to read)......When DD finished Pre-K 3, her teacher said "one more year with me (Pre-K 4), and she won't even need kindergarten". I swear, she said that. I laughed it off, blushing, and replied that I wanted her to stay with the friends she knew, and that kindergarten was still supposed to be a FUN time. In the end, DD went to full-day kindergarten (while Mommy was afraid to let go), but she NEEDED/WANTED it.

During her year in Kindergarten, she consistently had 99% 'grades', the other -1% was her talkative mouth. :hyper2: (It's hereditary I swear, LOL) I also was told that most kids level off by 3rd grade, which I understand completely...............IF you let your kid stagnate, and STAY level with their peers. (This is where my underlying anger lies, can you tell?) I mean, SOMEONE is valedictorian someday, right? Is it the kid whose parents LET THEM 'level off', while the other kids catch up? I doubt it.

UGH!!

And then, on Friday, when I talk to her teacher, the teacher says she KNOWS everything I'm telling her, that Kelly needs more work/incentive/challenges, and I hear HER say she has 'gifted' material she can give her. I'm just confused, and I don't know what to do. I hate trusting others to teach her to her potential, when I don't see that happening yet, and yet, I could NEVER do it myself.

I honestly don't know anywhere else here on the CB that I could share this with, without being blasted for being a braggart, 'proud parent', and UNgrateful for having an 'easy child', trust me, I've seen it happen before, which is why I also know she's NOT special, she just learns easily, and quickly.

I don't know how else to describe it, except for 'smarty-britches' (ala Brer_Papa). ;)

Soooo sorry to vent!!!!!!!!! On any other thread, I would've typed it all, and deleted it, before I submitted (because I have before). I really appreciate that someone, you-someones, took the time to 'listen'. ::yes::

On a positive note, we got DBro & DSil ALL moved in Sat.!!! Nearly ALL the boxes unpacked even! It's amazing, their new house looks lived-in already! We did so much over there, to make it 'HOME' for them - - - - - I want to live over there! ::yes:: (especially tonight) :worried:

Thanks, again.

:grouphug:

:sunny: Morning everyone.

Kim, don't be afraid to share your stuff with us. We would never call you a braggart or an ungrateful parent.

You might want to consider those piano lessons for Kelly. She is certainly old enough to start learning and would probably do well. Do you have anyone in your area that teachs using the Suzuki method? That is where they learn by listening to the music and the teacher shows them how to play it and the kids just play it. They don't start out reading the music. They learn to play fantastic music really quickly and when they get to a certain point then they start to learn to play piano the "normal" way by reading the notes. The Suzuki method is pretty much playing by ear and memory which is good for a gifted student.

My daughter Liz started playing the piano, using the Suzuki method at the age of 5 while she was in kindergarten. She played that way for a few years and then we moved to regular piano lessons. Because of the Suzuki lessons, Liz has the most fantastic memory. Even in her normal piano lessons she learns a song by reading the music a few times and then she plays totally by memory.

Smarty-britches kids take special handling. If you hold them back then they get bored and can become "trouble makers" just because they are bored. You should take the "gifted" work the teacher offers to you and see if it is suitable. If it is not enough then you will just have to find stuff to supplement it.

Kim, you can definitely handle this. Don't doubt that you can help Kelly to learn to her full potential. If you start now, you will grow with her.

I am sure that in Chicago there are plenty of programs that go on outside of school that you could get her into. Such as special workshops on school holidays etc. Some of these are available at low or no cost.

Anything that interests her such as dance, gymnastics, art, karate, music, drama will help to challenge her and to also make her a well rounded kid.

Hang in there Kim, I am sure that you will see your smarty britches through this. :D

It is a good thing Pop Daddy does not hang around here or we would be in real big trouble :teeth:

Where are you Brer_Papa?? Any news from Florida?? From what I see right now it is headed more towards Tampa than Orlando right now. Although it is so huge it is sure to cause lots of rain and wind everywhere in Florida.

Thanks Robin and Kim for the Birthday Wishes!

( and Kim your not late on wishing me a Happy Birthday, because today is my Birthday Sept. 5)

Have some Birthday :cake: everyone in honor of me today! :teeth:

Well got to go now and get ready for my big day!

Talk to you all later!

Have a good day everyone!

Hello everyone!! How are you all doing this fine evening?

Sarah, this morning I realized I wasn't late. Last night I was all confused, with the late hour, and the 3 day weekend, etc., and I thought I was late. Dodo brain for me last night. :o Hope you had a GREAT BD!!!

Robin, I want to thank you with all my heart for the advice, tips and the encouragement. It's very much appreciated. The Suzuki method sounds great! I wish they had had that when I tryed to learn. I hated learning notes on paper, and not being able to just play a song right away, and gave up quickly. :(

DD & I just need to have a little patience, like I told her, to see what her teacher can provide her.

Again, thank you so much!! ::yes::

Sarah, I baked a cake today and had 2 pieces  in honour of your birthday. (oops the U police are going to get me again :p )

I hope you had a good day Sarah, shopping with your friends.

 Hi Kevin and Kim.
