On our next trip we are planning on using some points for a short stay at the Poly.....which got me wondering where other DVC people have stayed using points! Why did you choose that resort? Was it good 'value'? and did you get any sort of room upgrade?!!

Can't wait to hear from you all!

We only consider this to get some sort of geographical advantage that we cannot get via DVC resorts -- such as walking access to the Magic Kingdom.

The poll may not be inclusive for some old time DVC Members. At one point in history BC was available on points, and I would imagine WL was as well. :drinking:

On one of our stays we decided to leave for WDW a day early. (Actually, we end up leaving a day early for just about every trip we take! :) ) We used points at YC for the first night due to there being no availability at any of the DVC resorts. We were upgraded to a Jr. Suite.

The only reason I can figure why they wouldn't be included is that some people couldn't tell the different between BC and BCV as well as WL and VWL. That's a shame.

I would use points to stay at AKL. I love it there.

We haven't ever used points to stay at a non-DVC WDW resort. I don't think using points for them is ever a good value (compared to staying at a DVC resort). When we want to stay elsewhere, we've paid cash - at least so far.

Best wishes-

Did those conceirge rooms cost a lot of points?
Yes, but like I've always said... "If it makes you happy, than it's a good use of points."

We purchased our points back in 2000. At the time we bought, we had a trip planned for February, but all DVC resorts were already booked at the time of our purchase. We decided to use those points to stay at the YC.

In 2002, we took a DCL cruise and wanted to stay at WDW for one night before the cruise. We splurged and used points to stay AKL concierge. It did cost us a lot of points (especially since it was a Friday!), but we had no plans to use the parks at all and did get a lot out of our stay there. We had extra points that year (something I doubt we will ever have again!), and for one night - yeah, I thought it was worth it.

This is a very good point.

On another thread; there were in my opinion; some harsh remarks from both sides of the argument about whether spending money to purchase DVC is a wise choice versus spending thousands of dollars each year or every other year on a nonDVC vacation to WDW.

If each person is happy with their decision on how they spent their money, why should anyone else feel they can determine the value of that happiness.

When we first bought into DVC, we did so via resale. All our contracts came fully loaded and we have a glutton of points. We used points for a 4 night stay at the Beach Club Concierge (BCV were being built) and 5 nights at the Poly, laggoon view Concierge. For a lovely total of 906 points.

Poly was worth it BC wasnt.... Although we now love the Villas there, the regular rooms didnt nothing for us.

And this coming September, before our 3 day DCL cruise, we are considering booking rooms at the Comptempory Resort Tower, with some holding points.

Points are points are points... since you have paid for them, use them for what ever trips your trigger....

At AKL we booked concierge with Savannah view and that is what we got. AKL is a top resort for us -- the theming is just superb and the sunrise safari is why we did the concierge level. Will do it again, but probably not on points. The time we did it the points actually worked out to less than the best cash rate we could get (no decent AP codes).

At YC we actually had a down grade in room. The room assigned to us had to be taken out of service -- maintenance problem of some sort and the resort was pretty full. We had been waiting for several hours to get our room and the front desk was peppering maintenance with calls. Finally they said that it was not going to make it back into inventory and started searching for alternatives. They showed us a room with a nice courtyard view and asked if we would like to go preview it first. We said no, that it would be fine. So we went from a water view to a courtyard view. The front desk was very apologetic about it and said they would speak with DVC about a point adjustment. They had it taken care of before we finished unpacking.

We selected the YC because we could not get the CR for a conference I was speaking at. We used points because we had some holding account points that would expire if we did not use them. The cost was okay but not how we would normally have used them. The YC is a great resort (not to biased since we own at BCV!).

We only use points at the other resorts if they can beat the AP codes. That is a case by case decision.

Count me as a member that has used points for both the Poly and CS. Not that we had planned on doing so, but the plane ressie changed and DVC couldn't make a suitable adjustment to our stay. I'd heard how great Poly was about 17 years ago (long before my first visit to WDW) from a coworker that went every year and said that was the only place she stayed. I just had to try it out ... DVC is much better!
The CS stay was what I call the vacation from hell (not the Hell, Michigan that's just 10 miles south of me). We took my family and never got to enjoy it because they felt that we OWED them a good time. They did nothing but complain. When we moved to OKW 2 days later, their attitude improved, but we already had the sour taste in our mouths. That was 6 years ago and they've never been invited back (even though they have some free tickets that were given them as a result of an incident at MK). :rolleyes1

Hi there-

I'm new to DVC (purchased just this week) and I was wondering what an AP rate is. Everyone abbreviates and I have no darn clue what anyone is talking about. :rotfl2: Can someone clue me in? And is there a place to go to look up all the abbreviations that everyone uses?
I feel like I'm :confused3 most of the time. :rolleyes2 But I love all the good information that I can figure out!

Welcome!

AP = Annual Pass rate. It's booking a Disney Hotel paying a special discounted rate. The room rate using an annual pass varies. Sometimes you can get a value rate at about $55 with with. It's not a given and only so many rooms are put out at this rate when/if they do it.

I have no idea where a cheat sheet is on this site, but I bet someone will be around to help you.
