Where is the best place to find knock offs, what brands can you usually find, & about how much are they?

Thanks!

Straw Market in Nassau had what I think were the D&B knockoffs. That's all I can tell you. Melanie

Go to the Straw Market!

They have them all!

The 2 times I've been to The Bahamas, I will NOT venture into the Straw Market. It's like being in Tijuana!

I'd rather shop duty free! There's a great place called John Bull's which is right on Bay St. which is the main shopping area in Dowtown Nassau. They had great duty free deals on Kate Spade, Sac etc. It's a huge store that also has duty free cosmetics (Lancome, Clinique etc.), watches (Movado, Swiss Army etc.) and Jewlery (Tiffany's etc.) - even some electronic equipment to keep the men busy!

I would recommend knowing your prices of items beforehand. I'm a "mall rat", so I went in the store knowing prices.

Happy Shopping!

I'd be careful, though. I have seen threads regarding bringing knockoff products back into the States being considered smuggling or contraband or some such. If you knowingly bring a product that proclaims itself to be a name brand, but isn't, you could end up in trouble.

That being said, however, since I know very little about purses myself, if by knockoff you just mean one that looks like a name brand but doesn't have any copyrighted insignias, then you are probably all right.

Just trying to help...

The straw market was a sweet surprise. (I'd actually never heard of it, until I bumped into it while DH and DD were doing an excursion.)

Everyone designer name imaginable (knock-offs.) Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dooney and Burke, Kate Spade, Prada, etc.

Someone replied to a question I had about the knock off purses in the Bahamas as well. She said that she was able to get a Coach purse for $45 and a Louis Vuitton for $65. She also said that there was every knock off brand you could imagine. I cannot wait and now need to budget in a lot more money for this trip! :rotfl2:

Boy am I lucky. My wife was livid she had to spend $35 for a purse!! Amazing what people will pay for something that can't cost more than $10 to make.

One of the earlier posters was right when he said to be careful with really good knockoffs going thru customs. A friend had a Vuitton rolling suitcase and duffel coming back from Atlantis (was actually purchased here in US on Canal Street in NYC). Going thru customs, the officer was very chatty and asked what she did for a living, etc., very friendly - then said to her that her job must pay very well to have LV suitcases!!!! She said, oh no, they're fakes - and he said don't say that to me because I might have to confiscate them - whereupon, she said, oh they were gifts so I don't know how much they cost, etc. And the officer said OK, that's the right thing to say. So be careful. :wave2:

I'm sure you're right--the purses probably don't cost that much to make. However, we pay much more for a lot of things than we should, so I guess it's just different strokes for different folks. I'd much rather pay $35 than fork out what the real things cost, which I'm sure is not much more than $10 too. :confused3

THANK GOD you said something. I am very stupid, and would probably end up in jail with my friendly banter. :rolleyes1 :worship:

In regards to some folks liking $10 purses. We each have are own thing and one of mine is fashion. I have a real couch but would like to see what the fakes ones look like as I am sure it is less than my real one.

:lmao: me too watergirl! I am addicted to coach purses, I have 3 and eyeballing one of the new ones!!! I think I'll pass though and put the $400 into our Disney cruise bank account instead! :thumbsup2 Oh, the sacrifices I make to go on a Disney cruise!!!

My daughter just bought a so-called Coach at the Straw Market last week for $45. How do you know if they are a "knock-off" or "real". I realize you are not going to get a "real" one for $45, but does anyone know what on the Coach purses distinguish a "real" from a "fake"

Just for anyone's info - please bargain, they were originally asking $60, and we got it for $45, we were there with only one other boat in port, and it was very slow, so maybe they were needing business. We had no trouble going through the market with lots of no thank yous and just looking, and we had 2 girls, myself and hubby. :sunny:

for Coach bags, and most other bags, these are red flags:

bulky stitching
misspelled or odd looking monograms (I guess you would only really know this if you have seen or are familiar with the original logo)
look at zippers and buckles. Real designer purses always have their logo/name on the hardware. Sometimes the fake ones have that too, but they are either bigger/smaller than the real ones. Again, you would only see the difference if you held it up against a real bag. Or sometimes, the fake logos look cooked or "off looking" in a different way. Also, look for where it says "made in". If it says something like Taiwan, it's fake.

Of course, the price is a dead giveaway. You could never get a coach purse for $45 or even $65! ;)

"My name is dreamcometrue and I am a purse-a-holic"

I was telling my 83 year old (cruise-a-holic) mom about this thread. She pointed out the 7 day off peak cruise she just booked on Celebrity's Mercury is costing her $399, and the purse she is taking on the cruise cost $12.

Really? Not like the one the Flintstone's have, but a real couch with comfy cushions? :rotfl:
Here's a photo of the straw market...Look close, you can see all the bags - I can see the green Kate Spade (is that her name?) bags that were big last year.

Also look for stickers. Sometimes the real thing will have logos embroidered on where fakes often will have stick on logos that just look embroidered but will easily peel off. There are good knock offs, decent knock off and down right bad knock offs. Test the zippers thoroughly because bad knock offs use really cheap zippers. Also check the lining because aside from the zipper or logo that is one of the first things to go on a knock off. Hey they may be cheap compared to the cost of the real thing but considering some knock offs still run $75-$100 you want to make sure it won't fall apart after 2 uses. You won't be able to return it.

Happy purse hunting!!!
