We just signed the paperwork for a BWV resale and are now waiting to hear from ROFR. We purchased a 160 point contract and already have the add on bug!!! I don't want to get caught up in emotion and jump in and buy another contract so will be waiting to see how this whole DVC works for our family. However, please advise the following:
1) Anyone regret adding on?
2) Anyone add on too quickly or for wrong point value?
3) I see continuous posts of people that continually add on time after time. Is it that difficult to foresee how many points are the right amount for a family?
4) From what I gather, once I become a DVC member, I can go on Disney's waitlist. I am under the impression there is a 25 point minimum. Can any amount greater than 25 points be purchased?

Thanks for any insight!!!

We added on four times. Two more times at OKW, once at BCV and once at VWL.

You can buy as many points as you want and are available for your use year from Disney. Disney will only sell you points for the use year you already have unless you purchase a new contract of 150 points.

Small resale add-ons include the closing costs which up the cost of the points. No closing costs from Disney.

We stopped at 500 points. It seems to be enough for us. Family of three. We go twice a year.

We bought new at BWV last summer, 240 pts. Added-on also at BWV (for greater 11 month reservation strenghth) just this week, 65 pts (wanted more, was all they had so we took it). Total points: 305. I can't say as I know the "right" point level for us, but we're gonna see how 305 fits us for a while (and maybe see if we can get another 25?).

Flirted with Vero pts bcs we love VB, and could buy direct from DVC for a hassle free $74 per pt. But since we tend to go there at off-times, we didn't feel we needed the 11 month reservation capacity there, at least not right away.

There is a 25 pt minimum (50 pts if financing them), but any amount (not just multiples of 5) can be added on after that. Just a note tho, availability of points for add-on can be scarce. Lots of folks wait months, even years before their add-on waitlists come thru.

Good luck!

Hi,

We started with an original purchase of 150 and soon realized that we would usually stay in a 2 Bdrm. So we started renting points off other DVC'ers and thought it would be some much easier to just add on . Bought 100 points at BCV (not even a year later) and haven't regretted it at all.

Down the road I would like to try for another 100 @ OKW. Someday!

Good Luck with you decision,
Lisa

We started with 230 OKW points and added on 150 after just one trip! We would like to have about 150 more points, but will wait awhile yet.

We originally purchased 200 points. We added 100 points before that contract closed, because we mapped out trips, and knew we would need more points to be comfortable. We just added 100 more points last month, taking us to 400 points total. We think that this will be a good number for us, although we haven't ruled out the idea of adding on again in a couple of years.

We've added on precisely because we didn't want to overextend ourselves and regret our purchase. This has allowed us to make sure that we can handle the point costs and the monthly dues. Also, as you will read over and over on this board, travel habits change once you own DVC. We tend to vacation differently than we did before DVC (more often, larger accomodations).

There is just 2 of us. We bought 300 point at BCV in March 2002. Within 1 year we added 100 more points, so we now have 400. This allows us 3 trips a year. Usually we stay in a studio, sometimes in a 1 bedroom. We already wish we could add 100 more. Oh, maybe next year!

we started with 150 on the last day there and when we
got home we called and bought 105 more.

We started with 230(OKW) back in 1999. Now we have 300 at OKW and 300 at VB for 600 total pts.

We like having the 11 month window at WDW(OKW) and ocean front(VB). We also have 2 kids(29 DS -17 DD) that will end up with a contract each in the future.......if we don't make it until 2042. We are 46+47 now so we plan on being around awhile.:D

3) I see continuous posts of people that continually add on time after time. Is it that difficult to foresee how many points are the right amount for a family?[/B]

In our case we added on before we even closed. We calculated correctly for our family but not our extended family. Sometimes they chip in toward maintance and sometimes not. We often take people with us or have let family use our points. Sharing DVC is part of the joy.

We have added on numerous times (all small - under 50 each time). We have done it this way so we could pay cash each time. I am currently waiting for more BWV points to come in  If it takes too long for that, we may just buy another contract through resale.

Started with 150 at BCV, a couple months later wish we'd have bought more. Went on VWL waitlist, but had no patience since it was so long so we bought another 50 at BCV since it was about to sell out. I love VWL, but I'm kinda glad we keep our small add on at the same resort. it does make things easier to keep up with. Good Luck!

We started with 170 points at BWV-when I read that the points were going fast and that our Sep use year was close to being sold out, I mentioned it to my husband, and he said that he thought we should get 30, just to have a round number(200), so we did.
Then I was pregnant with our second child, we had no trips planned for 18 months, and we were talking about the fact that it would be nice to have someplace to go in the summer with the kids(we won;t go near WDW in the summer months b/c of crowds)-so we added on 100 points at HH-never saw it, never had been to HH, just took the chance.
Then I posted on another board that looking ahead to wanting a 2 bedroom as the kids got older, we'd need more points, a small number, how did I go about getting that now that they were sold out.
I was told about the waitlist, but a friend of mine also read my post and told me she was selling off all her BWV to buy BCV and she had a 25 point add on, did I want to buy it? Absolutely! So that was that-though the last one has a June use year so I had to learn how to juggle two use years.
I cannot see us adding on for any reason-we go to HH once, WDW once and we always have points leftover to bank-we don;t have enough vacation time to use anymore points. LOL
I didn't realize how many points would be best for us until we started using DVC-I could really use a few more HH points though-as we use 110 every year, and so are always borrowing with that contract(we have 100 points/year there)

Began with 150 pts at VWL in 2001. I think most people tend to start small just to see how it works out. ( of course, it usually works out GREAT so you start looking for more points very soon ) In 2003, we decided we wanted a few more points at VWL but Disney was only selling BCV then. Our guide made it sound unlikely that the VWL points waitlist would pan out ( and we didn't know about resales then ), so we bought an additional 225 pts at BCV while at the same time insisting we wanted to be put on the VWL waitlist anyway. Well, wouldn't you know, 4 months after we bought our BCV points, the VWL waitlist came through. So we bought another 200 points there as well. Even though originally we didn't want the add-on at BCV, now we're glad it worked out that way as we like both resorts very much. I guess we initially may have regretted adding on at BCV, but we're quite happy about it now. It's absolutely true, you can never have enough points.

I bought 170 points, and after my first trip I knew that I needed more points, so I bought another contract of 150 points. Then DD got married at BC so I bought another 250 pt contract, and added on 25 pts. I added 105 pts at BCV, but have sold that to pay off the last contract. So right now I have 595 points which are all paid for. It's not enough for our needs with our grown children, so I am saving to buy an OKW contract later this year. I think 750-800 points will be enough for us. We take 3 trips a year in a 1 or 2 bedroom villa.:p

We made 150 points work for about 7 years, but when they ended pool hopping to SAB and BCV was about to sell out, we added on 56 points so we'd always have access to SAB.

Since we're Floridians, we can do a lot of short trips that aren't practical for people who have to travel great distances.

Bought 200 points at VWL in December 2000. Added on 70 more in July 2001. Then in August 2002 we bought a resale contract of 210 at OKW. Have not had the "urge" since.::MickeyMo

We bought 200 at OKW in 10/00.

Went on the waitlist a few months after that and added an additional 60 points.

When BCV opened, we bought 150 in June 02.

After our last cruise in July '03 (we were also in WDW for 5 days), we again added another 50 points at BCV. We can now say we have enough for our needs.

(Of course someday would love to try HH - afraid we might get that buying bug here, but due to limited time we can travel, it would not make sense for us).

We started with 220 a few years ago but added on 150 from a resale and 100 during the past year (both methods were good deals, in our opinion). We needed more when we started taking friends and family. Also, we always pay cash, so we wait until we have the money.
