What's your favorite breed of dog?

I have to say an Afghan Hound.. we owned several & used to hit the dog show circuit with them, they certainly aren't for everyone, but I JUst loved them. I am still trying to find another after our last one died.

other than that my husband insists on goldens, ( we are into our 5th generation).

we also own a pug ( best personality of any dog we EVER owned)
& a basset hound

Beautiful dogs. Are they like puli's? Also your dogs appear much prettier than a puli. What is their personality like?

The Kom and the Puli are both Hungarian dogs. The Puli is the herder, the Komondor is the guardian of the flock. The Puli is smaller and comes in several different colors. The Kom only comes in white.

Because the Komondor is a Livestock Guardian dog who was bred for thousands of years to make decisions on their own, they are not recommended for everybody.

Many of the responsible breeders are breeding Komondors to fit in today's suburban world, but they still need socialization and firm obedience. You always have to think like them and react accordingly. But they are not like guard dogs such as Dobies or Rotts. That is why you will never see a Kom as a police or personal guard dog. They have completely different temperaments that you can't really describe unless you know them.

Since they don't have sheep to guard in a household, your family - children, adults, pets, all become part of their "flock" which they will guard very seriously. You just have to stay one step ahead of them at all times.

That said, they are the most loyal, gentle with their families and anybody that you tell them is ok. They are so different than the dogs that were bred to please their owners.

They are very unusual dogs, completely different than the typical breeds that are popular. I could wax on for pages on this thread, but the best place to learn about them are:

Dawn,

You might be interested to know that you can cord your poodle just like the Komondor :teeth: They have similar coats.

I have a few breeds that I really like - Golden Retrievers, Greyhounds, French Bulldog, Dachsund. I've also owned Pugs and a Boxer - I like both of those breeds. If we ever got a larger dog, I think it would be a Standard Poodle. My very favorite breed is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I currently own one, and my parents have 2. I have trouble imagining my life without one.

Thank you. I looked them up while I was waiting for your reply. The cording sounds complicated. I think I will stick with "pony tails and poms". ;) What amazed me is that there are less than 10,000 Komondors. That is indeed a rare breed. I was also impressed with the fact that they have the ability to think for themselves and to function without a lot of direction. BTW, how do you actually maintain the cords?

We've had a Dalmation, Brittany Spaniel, various mixes, and we have a Pekingese and Chihuahuas right now. We love all types of dogs but really enjoy the small dogs.

Here is our white pekingese. They are often killed at birth because the AKC doesn't recognize their coloring.

Gordon Setter!
Here is my Gordon Setter. They are not as goofy as the Irish Setter. He is a really great family dog. The vet was saying he doesn't know why more people aren't into them; they are such great dogs!

We looked at a Gordon online when we were looking for our last dog. Can't remember now what it was, but there was "something" that bothered my wife and I about Gordon's.... maybe it was some type of health issue?

They look like GREAT DOGS!

I don't know of any health issues with Gordons...he is quite healthy. Some things I read before we got him said that they need a lot of exercise, but he exercises himself. He chases squirrels, runs around the yard. Not high maintenance at all. I just love the size and temperament...it's kind of the perfect "real dog"...like from storybooks. My biggest complaint is that he follows us around the house and is constantly at my feet...he just loves us!

Anyone looking for a family dog, consider a Gordon Setter!

I have a labrador retriever (yellow) and a border collie. Those are probably my two favourite breeds although I like most larger dogs. As a child, we had border collies, boxers, a black lab and the lassie-type collies. I did have two Shelties for a while as an adult, then I got a black Lab who was the best dog I've ever known. We still miss him.

We've got a Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix.... he's bigger than a Border should be, by far, he's about 70#~

Smart, energetic, and sometimes, tries my patience. Takes a LOT of exercise, a LOT of love, and he's *fiercely* loyal. A good dog for our family, but doesn't see any difference between small children and small animals.... all should be herded into the appropriate space, which *he* determines. Unfortunately, small children squeal and run, which of course, means he must be ALL the more diligent in his movement of them. *sigh* Thank goodness he's only a *tiny* bit neurotic.

We had a wolf/shepherd mix (not recommended)
an an afghan hound. I felt so sorry for that dog. He was blonde, and dumber than a box of rocks. It was sad.

What a beautiful dog! I have to say that I spent much of my childhood being herded by my parents' border collies. My mother said she never worried when she took us for a walk (we lived in the country) because the dogs kept us all together and on the path.

I love pugs! They're great dogs for families with children, IME/IMO. Our vet is also one that sees more pugs than any other breed in his practice and he loves them all. He said in all the years he's cared for them he's never met a mean one.

You got to love the pugs......:dog2: :dog2:

My parents own these guys, and I love them! If we were to get one, it would be a male since they tend to be the "lovers" in that breed. (Imagine getting a "hug" from a 110 lb dog. They like to lean up against your leg and wrap their near leg around yours.)

Not a great shot, but this is one of my parent's adults

My personal favorite is the Newfoundland.

This is my imaginary dog!! I love Bernies. Can I ask some ??? Do they drool??? How bad is the shedding? I also tend to prefer males ;)

We have a black lab and a Golden Retriever (they are in my siggy)

I always had these breed of dogs growing up- they are very family friendly

I grew up with German Shepards, Shep/Collie mix and an Alaskan Malamute. I really like big dogs.

I also really like shetland sheep dogs and collies but I was told that they are very barkie and hard to break of it.

I would also like a Westie. They are adorable but I'm not sure how good they are with kids. And I've never had a small dog.

But the dog I will probably get 'someday' is a Bernese Mountain Dog or many Pluto and Goofy pluto: :goofy:

But alas I have 3 boys under 6 and my DH says for now thats enough. I miss not having a dog.

Thanks for the great pictures. Loved them all :dogdance: :dog2:

I'm partial to Labrador Retrievers (what we currently have). I also like Collie's and German Shepherd (had one when I was young and he was the best dog ever).

BIL breeds Pugs and we have their dogs here quite a bit when they come to visit. I think they're so ugly that they're cute. They're very well behaved dogs.

They do not tend to be big droolers, but sometimes there is one that is. (My parents first male was, but still not as bad as a Saint Bernard)

As for the shedding, yeah they shed, but I don't think it is that bad. My parents have 5, so the house always needs to be vacuumed.

Check out the breed website www.bmdca.org

We currently have 3 dogs.
Lab mix
Collie
Yorkie

Beside these three we've had a few beagles, german shepard/collie mix and a couple mutts that i couldn't begin to tell you what they were. Theres very few breeds that I don't like. But if I had to choose my least favorite it would be a small poodle and a cocker. I hate to blame it on the breed but I've known a couple that I haven't liked. I love all my dogs but I know I will always own a Collie. The one I have now is my 3rd.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate it.

Aren't they the best dogs in the world!

I currently have 2 collies. One Sable and one Blue Merle.

These are my 3rd and 4th ones. My 1st two were both Sables.

Only downfall is the hair, but because everything else about them is perfect, I can deal with it. :)
