I love most larger breeds, but my two favourites are labs and border collies and I'm delighted to have one of each at the moment! Maya is my border collie, she's so smart and eager to please (won first prize in obedience at a local show a few years back) but can be a bit neurotic. She's CONVINCED that I'm deaf or otherwise unable to hear the phone ring, so when it rings she barks as loudly as she can and tries to herd me towards the phone. It is VERY annoying. I've tried various things suggested by different trainers to cure her but nothing works for long. Despite that, I love her a lot and she's great company.
Toby, my lab, is a beautiful dog - everyone comments on how handsome he is. He is amazingly good with children. My 18-month-old grandson can hug him, hang on to him, climb on him, and he's never the least bit perturbed. The biggest challenge we have with Toby is his boundless energy. He's very strong (has broken a number of leashes and collars) and his main goal in life seems to be to spend as much time as possible running. He's happiest when we can get him to a big open space and let him off leash - he'll run and run and run for the next couple of hours.
I was at a party recently with some friends, none of whom have dogs. One commented that she had a dog for a while but he kept running around her house and making wrinkles on her rug, so she got rid of him. It made me laugh, because I really can't imagine being without a dog (or two). I guess some of us are dog people and some of us are not.
