What's a reasonable price to ask for our (very much used) living room set?

If the Red Cross would except it I would go that route. Around here they will take anything that is usable and give the stuff to people who have lost their homes to fire, tornados etc...

I have a yard-sale every spring & fall.

I would just put it out at my next yard sale & take the 1st offer I get for it.

I'm all about getting RID of my stuff when I'm thru with it....I don't really care what I get for it, as long as I get RID OF IT. :)

Considering how picky the charity stores are when accepting used furniture (we've never been able to donate our old furniture because of the smallest problems!), I don't believe you'll have much luck selling it.

I'm with those who think you should offer it up on freecycle or craigslist.

We needed a couch for our basement. We new the kids would be rough on it. We went to a nice furniture store that was having their annual close out sale. We bought a brand new couch with 2 recliners built in for $300.

I'd give your old set away. Salvation army, goodwill, put a sign up at the grocery store...etc.

Put it on Craigslist for $50 bucks for the set, that should get rid of it today.:thumbsup2

The thing about listing it for "free" is that people think something is seriously wrong with it. Listing it with a price will get rid of it better.

Maybe you can find an upholstery store or a mom and pop funiture store (who builds furniture) and maybe sell the frame. I mean if the frame is still in good condition why not sell if for the frame.

I knew someone in Florida (when I was a kid) that would buy old couches and take everything apart and use the frame to build a new couch and sell it.

Worth a shot.

Give it away. You can get a tax deduction receipt if you take it to Goodwill or Salvation Army thrift. Give it to a homeless family housing organization. Give it to the Kidney Foundation.

Anyone who wants furniture that is 14 years old, used, partially threadbare and has small holes won't be able to pay much for it. But there are lots of people who could use it, no doubt!

If you don't know anyone who can use it, donate it.

The Salvation Army wouldn't even take it for free in that condition. I have never sold used furniture.

We put our old set out on the lawn and someone took it.... it was in better condition than the one you described. We were glad it was gone and we didn't have to mess with it.

Sorry, I have to agree that you are overpricing. I was at a furniture auction yesterday where like-new sofas (from model homes) sold for $200-$250. If folks won't pay more than $250 for a sofa that's virtually never been used, why would they pay $200 for something that's 14 years old and starting to fall apart?

Goodwill would not take that set. It is time for it to go to the dump.

Yeah...lol. My old furniture was always in good condition still! From the description given, I can't imagine why you would try and sell it in the first place.

Put it on the curb and believe me, someone will pick it up within a few hours.

A freebie on craigs list is probably your best bet.

Most of the charities would not touch it with a ten foot pole.

If you are ableto get $150, you probably got the right person at the right time. ;)

When DH & I were getting married, we looked at used livingroom furniture and came to a conclusion. People were getting rid of their livingroom furniture 90% of the time because it was worn and they wanted new stuff. It was the very rare occasion that you could find livingroom furniture that was in "like new" condition because someone was suddenyl transferred overseas or something and had to sell everything and had just redone their house.

I wouldn't price it at more than $100 bucks, and frankly, I'd give it to a college kid or put it on freecycle.com or donate it somewhere.

Wood furniture is different. We did buy a used bedroom set. It was 25 years old, weighed about 1000 lbs. & had been very well cared for by the previous owner. We paid $200 for it. We kept it for 14 years and then gave it to a friend because we did some renovations on our house, moved our bedroom to the 2nd floor and wanted new stuff. Our friend was just starting out in his own house and didn't have much furniture or money. We gave it to him as long as he could move it! I figured we had gotten our $200 worth from it.

You are right about wood furniture.

A friend of mind had some badly beaten up would furniture. She asked me how o price it for a garage sale. SHe was thinking $5. I told her to have a local antique dealer come out. Turns out it was mahogany (albeit abused) and got nearly $1000 for it.:thumbsup2

But used sofa furniture, you gotta be in the right time - right place to find someone to buy it.

Wow, didn't know I would was going to come here and be told that my stuff, which no one has even seen, is junk. My question was how much to sell it for, not should I sell it or donate it.

Anyway, we have decided to sell it in our yard sale this spring. We won't be donating it to Goodwill or putting it out by the curb with "FREE" written on it. And no, I'm not overvaluing my stuff.

I would like to get something out of it if we can. Donating it will not get us a deduction because we no longer itemize on our taxes. But, like I said, if anyone I know needs a set and wants ours, they're welcome to have it.

YAY! Of all things I get to do today, I got to add "defend my furniture" to the list! :lmao:

Could you post a picture & let us know how much you get at the yard sale?

:lmao: Yup, you did get some harsh comments! Seriously, I like the suggestion to put it on Craig's list for $50 best. ("Free" might bring too many crazy calls.)

When DH and I were buying upholstered furniture 15 years ago, there weren't a lot of "cheap new furniture" places around. Now you can get sofas for a song. Times have really changed, at least in my city! I don't think you'll get much for your furniture, BUT if you have the room, I think saving it for a yard sale is a fine idea. :thumbsup2
