What's a reasonable price to ask for our (very much used) living room set?

For an old, used, worn out sofa I'd pay someone to take it. We almost had to actually do that at our moving sale. NO ONE wanted it, and I don't blame them. You can buy a brand new sofa set at Ashley for $400.

We finally convinced a young bachelor he needed it and we helped load it for him just so he'd take it.

You're welcome to list it at whatever you'd like, but don't expect it to walk at $150.

We've always given our furniture away by putting it out the day before garbage day, or giving it to St. Vincent dePaul. Since we once had the couch from the curb I feel obligated and good to pay it forward.

Around here, St VIncents used to pick up everything, but they have become incredibly picky.

Here's what I would need to know before I bought a 14 yr old couch:

Did your kids ever throw up on it?
Did you ever change a poop diaper on it?
Did you have animals? Did they throw up, pee or poop on it?
Any one smoke around the couch?
Did any one ever sit on it naked and well you know.......
So much can happen to a couch in 14 yrs :scared:
:rotfl: OMG, I've never bought used furniture and now never will. It is kind of scary to think of all the things that have happened over 14 years or even 14 months. LOL

I agree with those saying to donate it. That's what I'd do. In any case, good luck.

OMG! I'm dying here!!!!:lmao: :lmao:

So true, so true!:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I'd put it at the curb on trash night..if someone wanted it..they would be welcome to it. We have many times put things out for trash that never made it to the truck..they are gone before the morning pick up. If someone can use and wants it..they would be welcome to used 14 year old furniture. I think you certainly got your monies worth from it already. I doubt it would make it into the truck..someone less fortunate will take it.

We have a LEATHER set that's 7 years old and we want something new. DH and I talked about it and agreed that we would never ask someone to pay for a USED sofa/love seat set. (good condition, just minor wearing of the leather in non-visible places) No way I'd pay for a "threadbare starting to get holes 14 year old" set. I'd say ask for $50 max - but that's even a stretch.

If you are offended by people calling it junk (based on YOUR description) then take a picture and post it! Prove them wrong.

Since it is such a valuable couch that looks like crap, buy a slip cover and save yourself lots of money.

I think this thread is going to become a Dis Classic :3dglasses

I hope it is! There's not enough drama in my real life, so I'm glad I could find it here. I finally riled up the "old" DIS gang enough to get myself added to the list. It will be my claim to fame. :thumbsup2

Didn't the OP have a previous thread asking about the quality of Big Lots furniture because their old living room set was beyond help and embarrassing to look at?

I actually did that with my 13 year old love seat and it's like having new furniture. I bought the slipcover from surefit.

No one would have bought my love seat. It's structurally perfect but looks really pathetic (without the slipcover).

I would say a max of $100. Please don't be THAT person on craiglists selling the (made up) Coffee table they bought five years ago for $90 when they paid $100. I actually just looked at our craigslist and saw so many adds like this and they keep on posting the same one over and over again for weeks/months. Some are posting the same thing daily.

Heres one:

I paid $100 for these two sofa pillows a few years ago. I am asking $80 to help recoupe my costs.

Now if those where my pillows I'd be like Ok I bought these three years ago for $100 bucks and I'll take $20 or best offer. Only if it was in perfect condition. Otherwise its given away at a yard sale for free or like 2 bucks each.

You can try to hang on to it for your garage sale, but is it worth it? Is it really worth $50 to hold on to it? Then, garage sale buyers are pickier than you think. I would recommend Craiglist or Freecycle to move it out of your house. I have sold or given away everything I have ever put on those websites without any drama whatsoever.

Yup. I linked to it on a previous page. I thought maybe the OP would clarify why it was embarassing and beyond hope last year but is too good to just give away now. I am thinking maybe she had it Stanley Steamered or something in the meantime. Oh well. :confused3

Just wanted to say another Dis thread that has made me laugh. I can not believe someone would want money for something they themselves have called embarassing to look at and then get insulted when called out on it. I gave away a set 4 yo in mint condition. I wouldn't bother trying to sell used furniture.

Last year we sold 2 loveseats. One was a very well-made piece that was quite expensive originally and was in okay condition (would have benefitted from a steam cleaning and possibly replacing the foam in one of the cushions). The other was 7 years old, but like new. We sold the former for $10 and the latter for $50 to a young lady who wanted them for her very first apartment. We were done with them and were glad to get rid of them; she was utterly thrilled to have decent furniture for her first place. Win-win.

IOW: price them to move and be done with it.
