Whatever happened to being Modest?

Whats the big deal. Everyone is born naked... if people didn't have such a hang-up with the human body I think we would be much happier in this country... Not to mention we aren't talking about people being naked here... its called a swim suit... I sorry to tell most of you raving folks that are about to blow a blood vessel over seeing Boart by the pool... but your kids have likely seen worse on their own simply watching TV... yeah the harry guy or fat girl aren't as attractive as the underweight anorexic ones on the TV but so what. If you dont' want to see people in swim suits you can always go live in Iran where you'll find all those nasty horrible bodies covered up from head to toe.... But to go to a tropical area for vacation and then not expect to see every manner of swimsuit made is kind of silly.

Walking through the lobby in a bikini with no cover up is tacky.. plain and simple. I wear my work out clothes to the gym but I do not wear them out to dinner KWIM?
There is a time and a place for everything.

It has nothing to do with hang ups with naked bodies. It has to do with manners.
They make cover ups for a VERY good reason.

Wearing bikinis or speedos to a restaurant or a grocery store has nothing to do with morals and everything to do with class. I don't care if someone is wearing a swimsuit to and from a pool, but I do care if someone is tacky enough to wear a string bikini to a restaurant. Kind of puts me off my "feed"

I would use a cover up if I got out of a pool and it was cold enough I needed it... but if it wasn't I wouldnt' cover up. I'm on vacation, I'm not at a job interview.... I'm being comfortable and if I want to wear my speedo while I walk back to my room, then I will.... if people want to stare, feel free it doesn't bother me I'm pretty sure no one will see anything they haven't seen before.

This is the Problem with todays society, they only care how it affects them, they don't give a second thought to anyone else. This is why this country is falling apart, it's always your closed minded, get over it. What happened to common sense or just plan old think before you do it!!!!! Family values went out the window along with our morals. I feel sorry for my 11 DD what kind of world is she growing into. In todays world they don't really have a future to look forward to or dreams.

Hmmm... except of course the developed country with substantially less morals (when it comes to modesty) don't seem to have the same problems we do in the US... Go to Europe and go to the beach or anywhere near the beach, you'll get an eye full of more than you will at any Disney pool... and oh my how could it be that the morally superior US has higher rates of rape, murder, teen pregnancy than those morally horrid europeans.

People have no sense of propriety, it is NOT proper to be in a public building or non-swimming public venue in a swim suit. People do not seem to understand that or stores, restaurants and other public places would not have to post signs saying "No shirts, No shoes, No service." There is a standard for acceptable clothing and just because some people do not feel that it aplies to them (for a million different reasons) does not change the standard.

I think it does matter what kind of hotel you are at. Using Disney Resorts as an example; At the value resorts, with outside hall ways, it might be deemed acceptable to walk to the pool in a swim suit. At the Grand Floridian, I personally would never walk through that majestic lobby in my suit. At the Poly, my room was right beside the pool, the walk was 10 feet, I did go out in my suit, and twice I crossed paths with people on their way to dinner and well dressed. I still felt like a fish out of water as I was not in the pool area.

Some things are personal opinions and some things are cultural, and then some things are just wrong. I am sorry, but bikinis in the park (on ANYONE of ANY size and age) is wrong. I know it's not popular to say people could be wrong about something...but it does not make them right.

I did see a 40 plus year old woman wearing a bikini walking around with ...well... lets just say I know for sure she was not a natural blond

There is a such thing as "decency" and IMO, when you are wearing something that is very revealing, be it a bathing suit or clothes, it's uncalled for and classless. I think alot of people leave their "decency" at home when they come on vacation. And what shocks me most is that many of the 'over-exposed' are young teens--WITH their parents! If I had a dollar for everytime I saw a scantily dressed young un' and commented to my hubby that DD would be allowed to dress like that over my dead body...I'd be rich!

I probably wouldn't have taken my kids out of line, rather explain the difference of attire, and encourage them not to stare just like I do if their is someone different in line with a disability i.e,.... But I disagree about, "it's like smoking". Smoking is clearly not allowed mostly because of health risks of others. Someones swim attire is not putting others at risk of their health. And is there a rule about thong at those parks? If not then it is allowed, and if you ar so affended then maybe this is not the place for you?

Interesting. People with disabilities don't choose to be disabled. I don't get the connection quite frankly. My children are compassionate and helpful and would not laugh, they've been taught. Someone who is "different" under their clothing is not the issue, nor should it be at a theme park. Exposing yourself to children is illegal. Smoking is legal in designated areas and I know I can avoid these areas. Offensive behavior is generally addressed at Disney, a family theme park, and there is a standard which includes offensive tee shirt slogans, language, slurs and the likes. Some how you misconstrued poor taste with there being a rule. We all agree that there are unwritten rules that require a level of common sense. I somehow doubt if the Typhoon lagoon is not the place for my family. I do, however, think it is not the place to wear my thong bikini. Not people....clothing. We are talking about clothing. Just my honest opinion. You are free to disagree with it.

I'm not saying that we have higher morals then Europeans, I'm saying Americans do not teach there children to respect themselves and others. Nor do they teach them between right and wrong instead they condone there childs actions when they are wrong. Therefore when they grow older they commit adult crimes. It's called taking RESPONSIBILITY for your actions!! That's what I was taught as a child.

People, why are you surprised or outraged. Do you not see how people go to church nowadays (especially in the summer) or go to work. I'm the first to admit, I'm probably old fashioned. I think when you go to a wedding you should not look like you just rolled out of bed, when you go to church you should not look like "nightmare on Harlot street" and yes, when you meet the president of the U.S. you should not have on flipflops. When you serve me food I don't want to have to see your ****s popping out over the top of your shirt into my pasta.

Disney is a simple reflection of our society. If they "let it all out" every day, what makes you think they are all of a sudden cover it up at Disney?

In any event, that might be a valid argument if that were the case everytime, but in many of the instances I was referring to, these were NOT people traveling from other countries.

I think if you want to bring God into this.. you would have to accept that God created man and woman buck naked.... So one could certainly claim that wearing those horrid clothes is an afront to God.

As for propriety of wearing a swim suit where ever... well some place have signs that say "no shirt, no shoes, no service"... the people that have own those places have the right to require me or you to wear a shirt or shoes... I respect that. I also respect your right to wear what you want, If you want to wear a thong and mow your lawn or jog in the park it doesn't bother me... If you want to wear a burka and sit by the pool, it doesn't bother me... I'm sorry you missed me at the Grand Floridian when I went from the pool to my room in my swim suit.... I'm sure you would have enjoyed snearing at me and maybe I would have been the topic of your dinner that night... It wouldn't bother me... If you want to live life believing your the Miss Manners then go ahead, but if you do I hope you enjoy being upset because most people don't bother with antiquated views of civility.... most people realize that life is too short to worry about things that have no real impact on themselve or those around them. In the futuer when you see the guy in the red speedo walking through the lobby feel free to say hi.

This thread makes me laugh. This is America, people. We have a Constitution that guarantees everyone the same basic rights. Which is why our legal system is so jammed up right now.

So - Mario Lopez can wear a Speedo because he's buff? But my husband, who has a "dunlap" cannot even though he's more comfortable with that kind of bathing suit? Um, that's not why I live in this country.

Should my husband wear a different kind of bathing suit? Sure. Does he have to? Absolutely positively not.

Heather Locklear is my age and had one child, as have I. She has personal trainers and looks great so she gets to wear a string bikini but I can't? Again, not why I live in this country.

Should I wear a one piece with a girdle in it? Sure. Do I have to? Absolutely positively not.

If you are that offended by someone, look away or leave the area. Please do not take away the personal freedoms that we enjoy in this country.

The sight of a person in a bathing suit they shouldn't be wearing is not going to influence the rest of your life. Get over it!

I just can't imagine traveling to a foreign country and not taking the time to research their culture and how it compares to mine and what I might need to adjust to keep from offending someone. But hey, that's just me.

In any case, like I said, in the instances I was referring to, these were NOT people from other countries, so it's a moot point.

I realize that this is America and people have a right to wear what they want so long as it is within the limits of what the law allows. And likewise, as an American, it's my right to complain about what I feel is distasteful, offensive and rude.

Your not kidding!!!!!!!!!! what I saw some 14 year old girls wearing would shock you
I teach my DD to respect her body and herself... I am not a prude about the naked body.... I think a girl who is taught to dress properly has a higher self esteen and self confidence. I feel so bad for those young girls who have no parental direction

But that is different than the OP's post about wearing bikini's and speedos in the lobby of the GF
Manners are manners, some people are taught from birth good manners while others are not.
I think wearing bikini's and speedos in lobby's of resorts shows poor raising and tacky white trash origins.

You missed my point... I don't see morality as having anything to do with how people dress or don't dress. How people dress and the insistence on modesty is not morality it is repression of expression, and if you repress people long enough they tend to snap... giving rise to more crime than the Europeans. I don't think the US family teaches any different morals than the European family does... I do think the US families tend to have a lot more repression when it comes to sex and the human body.
