Whatever happened to being Modest?

So basically you both feel you are morally superior to the other.....

No wonder we cant get anything done in this country....

What were we talking about again? Oh yeah bathing suits. At the pool, where what you want. At the parks, put on some clothes

I'm really not the morality police...I'm a child of the 60's, it would be hypercritical of me to the morality police. But, to me, bathing suits are appropriate when at a pool. In the parks or inside the resort area, you should be covered up appropriatly. I used to wear a very minimal bikini. However, sadly, those days are waaaay behind me. Now, it's a tankini. I generally wrap a towel around my waist for the walk to and from my resort room. Same for my 14 y/o dd. She tends to favor a teeshirt over her suit..which is getting briefer and briefer as she gets older.
My dh wears a bathing suit that looks more like shorts, but still he puts on a teeshirt to get to and from the pool area.

I just figure that if you're away from the pool area, you should be dressed a bit. Sure, there's nothing wrong with the human form, but it is more about respect for others I guess. I know that is going to be an unpopular stand, but there it is.

In the parks?? Now, that's where it gets me. I can't stand seeing girls/women in the parks in bikini tops. You're not swimming, so put on some clothes. At a water park I can see it. But MK? Please. Thats more about making sure everyone notices you.

I love when people are caliming that they saw someone wearing a bathing suit from the pool to their room and they have to cover up becouse that is ruining their vacation... Do people forget that the people wearing the bathing suit is paying for their vacation too and its there God given right too wear what they want as long as they are dressed....

But we all seem to agree that the park is a different story!!!!

**emphasis added

Who said it is a god given right for anyone to wear what they want? And I didn't see anyone say it was ruining their vacation.

People have no sense of propriety, it is NOT proper to be in a public building or non-swimming public venue in a swim suit. People do not seem to understand that or stores, restaurants and other public places would not have to post signs saying "No shirts, No shoes, No service." There is a standard for acceptable clothing and just because some people do not feel that it aplies to them (for a million different reasons) does not change the standard.

I think it does matter what kind of hotel you are at. Using Disney Resorts as an example; At the value resorts, with outside hall ways, it might be deemed acceptable to walk to the pool in a swim suit. At the Grand Floridian, I personally would never walk through that majestic lobby in my suit. At the Poly, my room was right beside the pool, the walk was 10 feet, I did go out in my suit, and twice I crossed paths with people on their way to dinner and well dressed. I still felt like a fish out of water as I was not in the pool area.

Some things are personal opinions and some things are cultural, and then some things are just wrong. I am sorry, but bikinis in the park (on ANYONE of ANY size and age) is wrong. I know it's not popular to say people could be wrong about something...but it does not make them right.

My DH and I noticed this past weekend at a local amusement park which has one full water rapids ride a pre-teen/young teen standing with a bikini type suit on in the middle of the park(with her family). We both nodded in an agreement there was no reason to be in a bikini at this amusement park(no waterpark attached). Also as a woman doesn't anyone teach their pre-teen girls to act or dress as "young ladies" at least for safety precautions with men and young boys around.

Last week at MK, two teen girls were passing through bag check wearing bikini tops and shorts. Security stopped them and told them they'd have to put on shirts before they could enter. I was pleasantly surprised!

Our mainstream culture nowadays is mainly superficial in regards to appearances and that spills into WDW despite its family setting people are going to dress how they wish because of how our society has put physical appearance as a priority in our culture so people are going to want to "flaunt it" or "let it all hang out" because of the way our society has placed such a priority on it, I personally could care less if your letting it all hang out or if your covered it doesnt really bother me.

But by who's moral's are you a card member of? See here in lies the difference/problem. Morality is subjective, whether it be religous or social. Some people would think my sexuality is immoral, but to many its just a norm (as it should be IMO).

Hiding under a rock doesn't make the world go away, and sometimes embracing things that are different and stepping outside the comfort zone can really enlighten one to other cultures and social norms.

Disney is all about diversity and different cultures. However, you don't see these CM's dressing (or not dressing!) in provacative clothing or letting their body parts hang out for all to see. Disney is also all about the family. The have embraced different definitions of a core family and even celebrate that diversity every year. However when in Rome...our national/cultural mores set limits on human behavior. This isn't Amsterdam or carnival in Rio de Janeiro....cover it up and enjoy the happiest place on Earth.

I think if you go to the pool, you expect to see people wearing bikinis, etc. But I do think that when you are in a park, grocery story, church, whatever, you should be a bit more sensitive about how much clothing you are wearing, or not wearing. I'm not saying you have to cover up every inch with clothing, but not everyone wants to see your more personal areas. If I see someone dressed in a way that is quite revealing, it does catch my attention....it doesn't bother me, I just glance and then look the other way. I figure if that individual wants to dress that way, that's their business. Things are much different now than they were, say 20 or even 10 years ago. 20 years ago, individuals did dress more conservatively.

It's a sign of the times we live in now....most things are much much more liberal (for lack of a better word). Not saying that's good or bad.

WOW...are you sure you people are at WDW? In all my trips to the world I can honestly say I have never seen what you people are compaining about. Sure every once in a while you will see someone with shorts a little short or someone who shouldn't be wearing a small tanktop, but I have never seen anything like described. As a matter of fact I was telling DW how suprised I was at the attire at the pools being so conservative. Now I did live the better half of my life on the beach in California so maybe it's considered normal to me to show some skin. But never have I actually seen someone with a paticular body part hanging out. If I did then so what...don't look!

I have to agree with some of the other posters.
I don't see that it's a big deal to wear my bathing suit from my resort room to the pool area and back. When going back I probably will have a towel wrapped around me but if not then so be it.

I don't think it's appropriate to wear bathing suits at an amusement park, having dinner at a resteraunt or at a grocery store.

Last year at Typhoon Lagoon there was a group of women wearing thong bikinis in line in front of us. While I generally ignore what people are wearing, I had to escort my DS (then 12) and my DS (then 6) out of line. One because he was completely mortified and embarrassed, the other because he was hysterically laughing. While some may think it is okay to "do what you want, wear what you please" I say your rights end where my rights begin. It's like smoking to me. Your right to smoke ends where my right to breath clean air begins. I do think there should be a standard because of the nature of the parks themselves. I think thong bikinis in a family park setting is inappropriate. On the beaches of Rio or in a private adult setting where the rules are clearly outlined "anything goes" all is fair, but I don't want to have to leave the line because of scantly clad patrons.

stepdisney....you make some very valid points.

interesting. I probably wouldn't have taken my kids out of line, rather explain the difference of attire, and encourage them not to stare just like I do if their is someone different in line with a disability i.e,.... But I disagree about, "it's like smoking". Smoking is clearly not allowed mostly because of health risks of others. Someones swim attire is not putting others at risk of their health. And is there a rule about thong at those parks? If not then it is allowed, and if you ar so affended then maybe this is not the place for you?

The bikini's don't bother me .... what bothers me is those women who wear them but forget to shave certain areas :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I did see a 40 plus year old woman wearing a bikini walking around with ...well... lets just say I know for sure she was not a natural blond :rotfl:

OK, if someone wears a string bikini or something else just as revealing, are they not asking to be looked at? Why would I teach my kids not to stare? If someone has a handicap that's different. I teach my kids compassion and that we all come in different shapes, sizes and abilities. But when someone purposely does something to their appearance - hair, piercings, tattoos, clothing - are they not asking for others to stare at them? I thought that was making a statement and what's a statement or expressing your individuality if no one looks at it?

I say stare away - if it bothers them, they won't wear or do that next time. :rotfl:

To each their own. I'm one to cover up going to and from the pools, wear somewhat conservative clothing to the parks and that's what I'm conveying to my kids. Too many strange individuals out their and I don't want them gawking at my little ones. If others want to bare all - well, we will probably be staring and maybe chuckling. If you don't like it, don't wear it.
;)

Whats the big deal. Everyone is born naked... if people didn't have such a hang-up with the human body I think we would be much happier in this country... Not to mention we aren't talking about people being naked here... its called a swim suit... I sorry to tell most of you raving folks that are about to blow a blood vessel over seeing Boart by the pool... but your kids have likely seen worse on their own simply watching TV... yeah the harry guy or fat girl aren't as attractive as the underweight anorexic ones on the TV but so what. If you dont' want to see people in swim suits you can always go live in Iran where you'll find all those nasty horrible bodies covered up from head to toe.... But to go to a tropical area for vacation and then not expect to see every manner of swimsuit made is kind of silly.

This is the Problem with todays society, they only care how it affects them, they don't give a second thought to anyone else. This is why this country is falling apart, it's always your closed minded, get over it. What happened to common sense or just plan old think before you do it!!!!! Family values went out the window along with our morals. I feel sorry for my 11 DD what kind of world is she growing into. In todays world they don't really have a future to look forward to or dreams.:confused3
