What is a Florida ID Card?

This past week, I went to the Florida DMV in Brevard County to obtain a Florida ID card. We own a condo in Florida and I brought all the appropriate documentation. My goal of course was to take advantage of the Florida Resident Discounts at Disney and other parks. Please don't flame me. We pay significant real estate taxes in Florida. The DMV agent asked why I wanted the card. I gave an honest answer that we were interested in theme park discounts. He explained this would not work at Disney. I got the card anyway. It only cost $10. It states right on it that it is a Florida Identification Card. It has a red title bar and my Florida condo address on it. Are there different ID cards for residents and nonresidents? I believe this will work to get the resident discount. I am just not so sure why the agent was adamant that it would work? Does anyone have any experience with this? :confused3

The DMV employee was probably just being a d-bag. It sounds to me like you have obtained your Florida ID card, proving residence in the state, and that's all Disney cares about. Anyways, good luck.

It seems like it should work...

However, in Georgia, you are technically supposed to give up any legal ID/driver's license that you have for any other state when you get one here (I had to give up my Cali ID-so now I can't get any discounts there)

I think this has come up before.

There maybe two different cards, one for full-time residents and one for part-time.

Hopefully someone else with more knowledge can clarify this.

Your ID should work. When we bought our second home in FL, we immediately went to DMV and obtained a "Florida Only" drivers license. It is only valid in FL and you must have a valid license in your primary home state. You do no give up your primary license. No one questioned it when we bought our seasonal annual passes. Remember a college id works as well and college students are not permanent residents either.

Your Florida ID will work. I am a property owner in Florida but live out of state. I have been able to use my ID for Florida resident discounts at Disney for the last 7-8 years with no problem. Since we also pay taxes in Florida on several properties, I see no problem with this.

Why would anyone flame you? You own property and pay your taxes here so there's nothing wrong with wanting a bit of a reward for it. Your id should work just fine.

Because as far as year round Florida residents are concerned, you're not a Florida resident, that's why. But Disney can make whatever rules they want.

Its because the OP is not a resident. They said they only own property here. Not flaming but the truth is the truth. I don't knock anyone trying to get better discounts and savings. Especially in this economy. Plus Disney needs the business.

Though I am surprised it cost $10. When my DD15 got one it was $3. I'm sure Disney knows the difference and as long as they allow it, no one else has the right to complain.

Thanks to all who responded. As many of you know, the DMV requirements for a Florida Identification Card are straight forward. I do believe this will work in getting the Florida Resident discount. They may not be as familiar with this in Brevard County. I just was not sure whether they have different ID cards for residents and nonresidents. I looked at the DMV website. They don't list 2 cards. I am sure in Orange County Florida, they would not have told me the Florida ID card does not work for theme park discounts. I'll let everyone know how it works out but based on the experience of others, it should be just fine. I agree that Disney sets the rules. I am just following the Florida law and what Disney sets as the requirements. Disney defines what they accept for the discount.

That's why Florida has this card. Lots of snowbirds who needed "proof" for checks etc, but weren't willing to give up the home state DL. My Dad had one until he moved full time to FL. (And he never ever went to Disney LOL!)

(Just out of curisoity why does it matter to the DMV WHY you want the thing... it's really none of his business. Sounds like he was just trying NOT to do the work! LOL!)

Actually that's not why Florida has the card. You can get a card like this in almost every state (if not every state) I had one in NY when I was 18 and didn't drive yet.

Lots of people, especially seniors don't drive. Other people can't drive due to disability or DUI's. All these people still need ID. That is the reason for a state issued ID card.

BTW the DMV guy was wrong. He didn't know what he was talking about. You'll get your FL resident discount. BTW As a FL resident I don't care if you live here 1 month or 12 as long as you pay your taxes and don't commit a crime in my state, welcome, welcome welcome!:lovestruc
