A friend gave us a box of canned goods today and inside, amongst the peas and carrots and beans was a can of condensed milk.

What on earth do you do with condensed milk?

Mix one can of condensed milk, one small container of cool whip, and one packet of kool aid, pour into graham cracker crust. Chill. Voila, one easy pie! :)
BTW, I use lemon cool aid.

I have a friend who uses it for her mashed potatoes. Works very well!

So you don't drink it straight, I take it?

I've never used it so I guess I better figure out what to do with it. That and the turkey DH came home with from the store the other day. If you bought X$ worth of groceries, you got a free turkey. Now it's just sitting there staring at me from the freezer.

I've never made a turkey in my life and I don't even have the proper equipment to cook one.

CARAMEL APPLE DIP

1 can Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk
Chopped nuts
Granny Smith apple slices

Remove label from can of sweetened condensed milk. Boil UNOPENED (yes! the can) for 3 hours, adding water to keep submerged throughout. Let cool. Refrigerate for 24 hours. Open both ends of can, push through. Remove lids. Roll in chopped nuts. Serve with cored slices of tart Granny Smith apples.

My mom also boils the can like this, cools it in the fridge, opens one end and scoops it out a teaspoon ful at a time and dips that bit of chocolate into melted chocolate with a toothpick. Roll in nuts as the chocolate cools and you have a caramel chocolate nut treat that is out of this world. Don't handle the caramel as it literally will melt with your body heat. Mmmmmmm

Get a Reynolds cooking bag, follow directions on the box. You can get a cheap foil roaster pan, around $3, and you are good to go! Allow at least 4 days in the fridge for the turkey to defrost, longer if it is over 20 pounds.

My favorite thing to do with sweetened condensed milk is Dolly Madison bars. Graham cracker crust, chocolate chips, coconut, pecans, all covered with condensed milk and baked. Yummy!!!

Yes, our favorite is a 7 Layer Bar...similar to yours but a few extra & different layers. I'm SURE the recipe comes up if you google it. Its SUPER EASY.....and EVERYONE here fights over them. lol

Well, we're going to have CHristmas eve dinner at my mother's and do Christmas day at the ILs, so I won't need to cook the turkey for awhile.

We'll see what happens when I actually DO cook it. I'm so afraid I'll mess it up and it'll explode.

really? I would think the potatoes would be too sweet. I can see evaporated milk in potatoes, but not sweetened condensed.

I just used a can today, to make fudge!

Easy Microwave Fudge

2 12 oz bags chips (DD likes semi-sweet chocolate, but you can use any combo - milk chocolate, peanut butter, etc)
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1/2 stick of butter or margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla

put chips, milk and butter in a microwave bowl, cook on 50% power for 4-5 minutes. stir, if chips are completely melted and mixture is shiny, it's done. Continue cooking 15 seconds at a time until chips are melted if necessary. Stir in vanilla.

line a 9" square pan with waxed paper. pour fudge into pan, pat out evenly. chill. cut into 64 pieces, store in the fridge.

Layer cookies, sometimes called magic bars

In a 9 x 13 glass dish, add in this order (bottom to top layers):

1 stick butter, melted
1 cup graham cracker crumbs
1 cup coconut
1 cup crushed walnuts
1 cup chips (chocolate, peanut butter, butterscotch, whatever you feel like)

pour 1 can condensed milk over the top

cook in 350 degree oven for 25-30 minutes

As for the turkey...buy an aluminum roasting pan. It is also helpful to have a meat thermometer (if the turkey doesn't have a pop up timer) and a baster. As much as all the tv shows show the problems with making a turkey, it's really not that difficult if you can follow directions. You just want to remember to baste it (periodically take the liquids from the bottom of the pan and reapply them on top of the bird), every 20 minutes or so, to keep it from drying out. Also as the turkey gets brown, you may need to make a tent of aluminum foil so it doesn't get too crispy on top. The biggest problem for me is figuring out how long it will take to defrost, it does take several days.

Fudge. In coffee, for a special treat. Winnie the Pooh likes it with honey on bread, but hold the bread.

My aunt Ruby would scrape sweet corn off the just-picked cob, dry it on screens in her sunny Utah backyard, then, in the dead of winter, mix those corn kernels with condensed milk and steam for the greatest creamed corn you could possibly imagine. She's gone now, but I remember her cooking!

Heaven's NO! Also - there's evaporated milk - which the can looks very similar. Condensed milk is often used for baking...maybe fudge or cookie bars. You've never heard of it? If you look at recipe books - especially deserts - you'll def.ly run into it.

On your Turkey - get a "roasting bag" - tie it up and put it in a baking dish - the bag keeps it from drying out. Just shove a stick of butter inside of it and maybe some salt and pepper - that's really all you need. You can experiment w/ other spices/etc....but it will taste just as good with the bare minimums.

Good luck!

Yup, that's the 7 Layer Magic Bar recipe. Except we use ALL those flavor of chips. Thats where the 7 ingredients (layers) comes from.

Condensed milk on a snoball.... :thumbsup2

It's a New Orleans thing.

Oh yeah!!! YUM! :goodvibes

A couple of other uses:

Condensed milk is used to make key lime pie. DOUBLE YUM!!:thumbsup2

And, I just saw Rachael Ray make her 5 minute fudge with condensed milk.

DH has a recipe for home made ice cream that uses condensed milk.

As another poster mentioned, make sure it's condensed not evaporated as the two are quite different.

Make Chocolate Coconut Confection bars from the Yacht Club and Beach Club! :thumbsup2

Cover a 13 by 9 inch baking pan with enough aluminum foil to hang over the long ends. Spray with cooking spray.

Mix together:
3 cups of grahm cracker crumbs
2/3 cup of melted butter
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon

Press into bottom of prepared pan.

Next mix together:
4 and 1/2 cups of coconut
1/2 cup chocolate chips
1/2 cup pecans

Spread over grahm cracker crust, pressing down a little bit.

Pour 2 cans of sweetend condensed milk over cookie mixture. Sprinkle with holiday jimmies or sprinkles if desired. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes, until lightly browned and the middle is set. Cool completely before lifting out of pan.

Turkey is easy! :thumbsup2 Just roast, roast, roast, roast the heck out of it until the leg falls off when you pull on it a little. :teeth:
