What does one do with condensed milk?

hello dolly bars (aka dolly madison, 7 layer etc) or other bar cookies ie cherry-coconut
pumpkin pie
fudge

I use it to make peanut butter choc chip cheesecake (a family favorite), as well as fudge (milk chocolate, mint chocolate, butterscotch, peanut butter, candy cane, etc.).

If you go to eaglebrand.com you'll find an extensive list of recipes which include sweetened condensed milk.

Happy cooking!! ;)

This was just on Oprah yesterday:

Remove label from can of sweetened condensed milk. Boil UNOPENED (yes! the can) for 3 hours, adding water to keep submerged throughout. Let cool. Refrigerate for 24 hours. Open both ends of can, push through. Remove lids.

This is one of my all-time favorites. My mom always made it and now I make it. People will TOTALLY freak out if they catch you cooking it but, if they live through it, they will start doing it, too. :rotfl2: We eat it right out of the can--sometimes with a bit of Cool-Whip but it's fantastic just on it's own.

Don't worry about the turkey--I think turkey is the easiest part of any holiday dinner. You don't have to stuff it--just put it in the oven and roast it--covering it with foil if the skin starts getting too brown. You'll be fine.

We'll see what happens when I actually DO cook it. I'm so afraid I'll mess it up and it'll explode.

TOV

:confused3

Just a big chicken....why would it explode???

You have access to the internet-right?

Then "google" how to cook a turkey. Or go to Martha's website...or The Cooking chanel's website....or call the Butterball 800 # ...or open a cookbook....or call your Mom or MIL(who probably cook one yearly).....

Bake pies with it, like pumpkin pie, sweet potato pie...

TOV, just to get things straight, is it evaporated milk or sweetened condensed milk (Eagle Brand, for example)?

Yes, they are NOT the same thing. My parents still talk about the time my mom got mixed up and made a casserole with sweetened condensed milk and it was 50 years ago.

Yes, our favorite is a 7 Layer Bar...similar to yours but a few extra & different layers. I'm SURE the recipe comes up if you google it. Its SUPER EASY.....and EVERYONE here fights over them. lol

I love those too!! It's on the Eagle Brand condensed milk website. I make them every year for xmas. I'm going to make a batch this week :) We don't put nuts in ours though.

I'm curious....why would someone give you canned goods?

Maybe they were moving and didn't want to lug the canned goods with them. Maybe they were cleaning out the pantry and had tons of extras. Maybe the OP needs them. I don't think it's that abnormal for someone to give someone else canned goods ;)

I just used a can today, to make fudge!

Easy Microwave Fudge

2 12 oz bags chips (DD likes semi-sweet chocolate, but you can use any combo - milk chocolate, peanut butter, etc)
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1/2 stick of butter or margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla

put chips, milk and butter in a microwave bowl, cook on 50% power for 4-5 minutes. stir, if chips are completely melted and mixture is shiny, it's done. Continue cooking 15 seconds at a time until chips are melted if necessary. Stir in vanilla.

line a 9" square pan with waxed paper. pour fudge into pan, pat out evenly. chill. cut into 64 pieces, store in the fridge.

You beat me to it! That fudge is delicious!

What's the difference between evaporated and condensed milk? Aren't they the same?

And annegal--why somebody gave us canned goods is none of your business. ;)

Evaporated milk can be used as a milk substitute for cooking, baking, even putting in coffee, etc. I like to use fat free evap milk to make hot cocoa.

Sweetened condensed milk is something different. It's got a real creamy, thick texture, like very thick creamy caramel and it's very sweet, you really can't use it for much of anything other than making sweet things.

NOOOO!!!!

Evaporated Milk is basically milk cooked until 1/2 the water is removed, then canned. it's extra strength milk with nothing else added. Has the consistency of half and half. Name brands include Pet and Carnation.

Sweetened Condensed Milk is milk with bunches and bunches of sugar added, then cooked down until it's the consistency of caramel topping, then canned. it's really really sweet. the name brand is Eagle Brand.

both of these are common in "house brand" labels as well, so read carefully.

really? I would think the potatoes would be too sweet. I can see evaporated milk in potatoes, but not sweetened condensed.

Me too :thumbsup2
The unsweetened kind can be used in chowders.

1 can sweetened condensed milk plus a 8oz package of herseys semi-sweet chips and one 8 oz package of butterscotch chips. Boil all of these on the stove in a double boiler until thick. Pour into a pan, chill and you have fudge.

The turkey is easy to cook. Make sure you read the directions, defrost in the refrig. and when you clean it, take out the package of "stuff." I throw the stuff away. Put it in the oven and put some tin foil over it for the first few hours. The last hour I take the tin foil off so it can brown. Really it is very easy.
