What do you think of Miley Cyrus' new video - Party in the USA?

My DD saw it the night they aired it on Dancing with the Stars--she loves that show too--especially last season with Shawn Johnson, anyhow--she loves Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana, my DD is 9 so she isn't in to the make-up, skimpy clothes things--which if she wanted to wear clothes or eat food she won't be unitl she can get a job and pay for it herself:rotfl:.

My dd 11 and I have watched the whole version on VH1 and yes Miley is getting skanky. Even dd commented on it.

The Disney channel has really "sanitize" the clip they show. Yes she is an actress playing a part, so I don't expect her to be HM all the time. I started losing faith in the HM franchise when the Vanity Fair picture came out. Who poses with their father with their head in his lap? Also what parent lets their 16 year old kid date a 21 year old? That did it for me. DD still watches HM, but is more into Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift and iCarly. Oh and let's not forget the Jo Bros!

I don't have a problem with what they do with their own family, I can't say what my kids will be doing, I hope the right thing though, my concern for her dating someone older is that in some states you could be looking @ being in trouble for that (not 18 yet) I heard of on story where this boy (young man) had to register a pedifil (spelling) because the girl's parents didn't like him, he was 19- she was turning 17 they ended up marrying but he will be a register sex offender for the rest of his life...is that ok? I don't think so.

I think you just have to be able to differentiate Miley from Hannah. One of my best friends took her 6 yo dd to see Miley last week and when she got tickets asked if I wanted to go and take dd (not quite 6). I said no thank you because it was Miley - I might have considered it had it been Hannah, but even then I think 6 is too young for a pop concert (my opinion for my child only....I don't think anyone else who takes little ones are bad parents) - but I don't really keep up with it all but I know Miley is a little more edgy and "hard" while Hannah is all Pop. I personally really like the song and think it is "edgy" and definitely not something for children.

Hmmm, this is very interesting. And I have to say that I saw worse than what she was doing in the video, at the high school football game the other night. The 16-17 year old cheerleaders were shakin it pretty hard in their little short skirts...Im just sayin LOL

I love the song, the video and MC. And yes I have kids, 4 of them ranging from 12 to 1.

When I was growing up kids under 16 didn't go to concerts. What has changed so much that kids that young need to be going? My eldest is 12. She has a few more years before I will allow any concerts. That said, I was surprised at the change in Miley but not completely unexpected. Girls at that age are very aware of their bodies and what those bodies do to others. So add some marketing and this is what you see.

Nothing has changed, its not a need for a child or a parent to go to concerts. I view it as any other outing with my children, and being able to give them an experience they'll remember forever. I was fortunate to have a parent who allowed me to go to concerts, broadway plays and sporting events at a young age. I feel taking my dd to concerts, or any other live event today is no different than what I did as a kid. I guess it was just different for you :confused3

I cannot believe that is Miley Cyrus! I am just in shock! They played that on the Disney Channel? My kids will not be watching THAT! It was SO inappropriate. How can parents let their teenage daughter act like that? She acted like a tramp. I'm sorry, but she did. And the dancers in the background were dancing very provocatively. My mouth literally fell open from disbelief. She doesn't have to be 'Hannah Montana' forever, but she can at least act like a decent role model. There are enough pop stars who act like hookers. She doesn't need to add to the numbers.

I think the song is catchy, and she is dressed similarly to people her own age. Trust me, go out to any dance club and the girls that are 20+ are dressed WAAAAY more "inappropriately" than Miley in this video. What the heck is wrong with cutoff jean shorts anyways?

Either way people need to remember that she is an ENTERTAINER.

Very interesting thread. I agree that Miley has a short time to be indepdendent from HM. Which really is now, because I'm sure she's done taping the HM episodes that will be coming out in January for their last season.

I like Miley and so does my 7 year old. My eyes did widen a bit when I saw her chest coming out of her top. Other than that, there was nothing else that was too bad. My DD does know the difference between HM and Miley Cyrus. She does know that when she's on stage that she's wearing a costume for performing. Performers always push the limit a bit in what they wear on stage or in videos.

Would it be nice to have an entertainer break out of that mold of growing up too fast? Yes it would. As long as Hollywood dangles the money in front of them, they will pretty much conform to anything that gets them that. I do prefer to watch Taylor Swift videos and Selena Gomez for now.

I saw a recent interview with Miley concerning the song and she basically stated this song was more to help launch her clothing line - as was this entire CD the song appears on. That is why it's only being sold at WalMart where her clothes are sold as well. She stated that this song is fun and upbeat and talking about a party and the video was to reflect that as well; however this is not the direction she would like to head down musically. She sees herself doing more rock music and so forth. She also said that while a great many of her fans enjoy the song and the video she sees more adults bobing their heads to the beat of the music.

For you parents who are SHOCKED that she would do a video like this I would like to know what type of video would you have liked to see to accompany this song? Her hanging out with friends in her room wearing flannel pj's singing into the handle of her brush while her friends ate ice cream and butterflies and mythical creatures flew in and out of her room singing backup? And the party in the song would be nothing more then a sleep over that ends in a pillow fight.

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: I would have been shocked if it was like that. :lmao:

I'm one of those adults that bob my head to that song... :rolleyes1

You are comparing Miley and the dancers in this video to acting like hookers. You don't get out much do you?

I'm one that shakes my hips to it, along with my 11 year old dd-----gasp.

Doesn't anybody here remember a man named Elvis?:confused3 He had a lot more aggressive hip shaking, and that was 40 some years ago.

If you think Miley is acting like a tramp, then you really do need to get out more. Have you seen any cheerleading competitons? Been to any school dances? Her little bit of turning her hips from side to side, in time to her lyrics about swinging her hips, is not anything horrible.

I find it interesting that if people don't agree they start going on the offensive.

It is okay to disagree and leave it at that. :)

I watched the video on youtube and I really don't understand what the big deal is. :confused3

I totally agree with the pp who said that she's seen worse at a dance recital! My sister and I always say that every year when we go to our younger (much younger) sister's recital. :scared1:

Miley is growing up. She gets picked on a lot, and I don't get it. I just think that people are mad when she doesn't fit into their mold, and they want her to stay a "tween star" forever. And personally, I don't agree with the under 10 crowd watching her show anyway. I don't let my DS5 watch the older kid Disney shows like Zach and Cody or even the cartoon network shows like Spongebob and others. That being said, I know a lot of kids his age that DO watch these shows including Hannah Montana. I think the themes are meant for older kids. These are decisions for parents to make, if you don't like it, then don't let your kids watch it. Period. Don't be afraid to be the "mean parent".

When I was a kid, all my friends watched Married with Children but I wasn't allowed to. At the time I thought that was unfair, but now I understand it. Your children will too. :flower3:

Last time I checked the girl was 16 or 17. She's doing nothing worse than any other teenager does, it's just publicized more.

Give the girl and her dad credit. They're changing her from a TV show star to a true rock star that may be around a lot longer than most people thought.

Anyone who finds her offensive better get their head out of the sand and see what other kids her age are wearing and acting like.

I dont see what the big deal is, she didnt dance provactively beyond shaking her hips to the music, but when your dancing I thought that was the idea? :confused3. I think that some people are over reacting to this because of their own insecurities. She is rather controlled by comparison to other people her age. She is young and wants to have fun, dont we all? I think calling her a hooker or skank is taking this video way too far.

I don't think anyone's calling her a hooker, shank or tramp. People are saying she is dressing and acting like one. Let's face reality here. Whether we like it or not, people judge us based on our behaviors and our dress code. I didn't make those rules, that's just the way the world is. Isn't anyone concerned anymore about the sexuality/sensuality that's being portrayed as "normal", "okay", and "in style" for little girls? She's not a kid, but she is a minor still! Is it okay for her to dress in such a way, jive her hips in such a way as to garner the attention of - gasp - dirty old men??? This is life, this is reality, people! We may not like it! We may believe girls should have the right to dress any way they like and still be respected for who they are and not judged for what they wear. I AGREE! But it's not realistic! If you dress like that, men WILL think that you're "loose", "easy", however you want to put it.
Let's teach our daughters that they are MORE than the way they look! How about teaching them modesty? How about teaching them to focus on their minds instead of their bodies? Do we honestly want men and boys attracted to them for the way they dress? What about respecting a girl for what she has to offer the world other than sexuality? I think instead of everyone defending the way she looks and how "normal" it is, we should use this as a lesson to our girls about why we don't want to dress/behave that way. There is a difference between a dance recital, ballet, and basically pole dancing on a playground. If those of you who are defending this type of behavior can't see that difference, there is nothing I could say that will make you change your minds. But it's never been okay. Was it around when I was a teenager? Sure it was! Was it okay then? No! Did I hear boys talking about what they wanted to do with girls they saw dressed like that??? YES!!! My 15 year old son watched the video and was transfixed. He said, "I don't care about the music at all, but she is SO hot!" Does that tell you anything?

That was so tame!! I'm 22 and I must've been about 12 when Britney came out with "Baby one more time" and I remember the huge outrage that got because she was only 16 and looked so slutty I didn't understand the reactions then and I don't understand them now either she's dressed like teenagers do at least where I live and how I would dress if not for those pesky 15 lbs (where's my 16 year old body when I can appreciate it! :lmao:)
... reactions like these are why Disney phases stars out and bring new ones in all the time they have to grow up sometimes , teenagers have to be themselves and it was nice for a while for her to fit the image of what the idealistic preteen should be but now she's Miley, shes almost an adult (well legally) and she should be able to be herself, its no different than when teenagers graduate from high school and go to college except the whole world's watching her grow
I do agree with the posters who say maybe it shouldn't have come on right after Handy Manny not so much because of the children's reactions because that audience really isn't going to care but because of offended parents

But shouldn't we also teach our daughters (*sigh* I wish I had a daughter) that we should not worry about the opinions of others
I agree that personal image is important but if we teach our kids that they have to be a certain way because of what society will think they will be in a world of trouble in the future especially during the preteen and teenage years when girls start really getting mean and picking on each other due to their own insecurities..

In most cases, I agree that what society thinks does not matter. However, we wouldn't say it's okay to smoke a joint because nobody should care. Certain things do follow us throughout life. I know of girls who dressed suggestively in high school and college and could not shake that image later in life. Most of the kids who tease others are the ones dressing and behaving like that anyway, IMO. If we want girls to pursue a career, etc., we should encourage them to dress appropriately. We wouldn't go to an interview like that, so obviously we do care what society thinks in some cases.... :confused3
