What do you think of Miley Cyrus' new video - Party in the USA?

Here is what i just read:
Cyrus is currently on her second concert tour, the Wonder World Tour, which does not include Montana.

So, it seems her current concert does NOT include HM..

I took my dd to her concert the first time it came around -- my dd was just about 7 - we had a BLAST... it was pretty tame though.. but even now with my dd at almost 9 years old, i would have no problem taking her to see the Miley concert - i would also love to go, but just don't have the extra $$ to go..

I think parents just need to use this as a teaching tool to their dd's.. i don't think it's a clear right/wrong issue -- with any of it -- we as parents need to take the responsibility to see that our kids understand the line b/w TV and reality.. and actresses and real life.. (HM/Miley). :)

I understand what you are saying about all this to a point, but i also believe it must be very hard for her (Miley) to try to break out now and succeed on her own - she has been put into such a box, with the HM show (yes, it has made her rich, but i am sure there are downfalls also) She is really going to have to work that much harder to get herself known for her growing/emerging style as a young lady.. not a child actress..

I took dd to the HM concert last year and plan on taking her to Miley's this year. We are not expecting HM, in fact dd will be disappointed if there is because HM is so "kiddish" (her words, not mine.) She's in middle school now, and it is definitely not cool to like HM, Miley however is.

There was a post here, or on the CB and the mom said that the only HM songs that were sung were from the recent movie. The Climb was one of them, I can't remember the other.

IMO, that video is not appropriate for the Disney Channel. But, whatever . . . it shouldn't come on after little kids' shows. If it is on somewhere else, I might not object. And, yes, I do think teen-aged girls are trashy if they wear shorts that short and dance like that. But, hey, that's my opinion. Obviously, most of the world disagrees!

BarbWB, you are not alone! I agree that it is a very trashy look. The video seemed very suggestive to me, too. I have a 15 year old son, and he confirmed it for me:) Even if some girls out there dress like that, I agree that most do not! I have to say, there are a couple girls in our local school that dress like that, and all the other kids think of them (and talk about them) like they are tramps (yes, my grandma's word, but still somewhat appropriate IMO). Like it or not - and whether it's the "style" or not -- we are judged by our appearance. Young girls need to be taught this. If they dress a certain way, they are thought of as a certain way. If your daughters want to be respected for their mind, their wit, they personality....they should not dress trashy. It was trashy 25 years ago, it's still trashy today. Just more accepted in our sad culture of promoting sex appeal in young girls.

Didn't we just have this debate over the Fly in the Wall video?

Just like then, I really don't get the big deal over this. Maybe it is because when I was a preteen, we were listening to Madonna and Cyndi Lauper, but nothing HM has done seems out of line. It isn't like she's another Brittany Spears, singing suggestive lyrics and going for fetish-appeal in her video wardrobe & props. She's a teenage girl, pushing the envelope fashion-wise like teenage girls are wont to do, and that's what videos are meant to appeal to - the teen fantasy of freedom to do things that their parents would never allow. It is the same basic principle as a show like Phinneus & Ferb - clueless or absent parents allowing the kids to have wild adventures - but for teens, those wild adventures are partying with friends, driving sports cars, wearing short shorts, dancing, etc. not building roller coasters or submarines.

....."Sabrina the Teenage Witch" or "Clarissa Explains it all"? :lmao:
Now....what was that name of that talking cat on Sabrina the Teenage Witch??

but I agree with the above blogger:yay:

My dd 11 and I have watched the whole version on VH1 and yes Miley is getting skanky. Even dd commented on it.

The Disney channel has really "sanitize" the clip they show. Yes she is an actress playing a part, so I don't expect her to be HM all the time. I started losing faith in the HM franchise when the Vanity Fair picture came out. Who poses with their father with their head in his lap? Also what parent lets their 16 year old kid date a 21 year old? That did it for me. DD still watches HM, but is more into Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift and iCarly. Oh and let's not forget the Jo Bros!

Oh Geez... not again.. are we going to backpeddle with this again?! :rolleyes1:sad2:

I'm sorry but this made me giggle. Of course they don't.....they aren't pop stars in a music video.

That's what I'm thinking. My DD doesn't like Miley Cyrus so I never follow her. I went and watched most of the video & yeah the shorts were short but I looked at them more of what dancers would wear. I'm pretty sure I've seen more revealing leotards on the dancers at our park district while just practicing & yes, I HAVE seen their sports bra's out the side & even in the back of their leotards (more than what I could see in this video) & these girls are not 17 year olds.

Those shorts looked like a type that I've seen worn over leotards for gymnastics during practice but um...my DD showed WAY more legs when wearing a leotard doing gymnastics, those can have quite the high leg cut than MC is on the stage dancing/performing.

I never would have given the pole a second thought as don't some ice cream carts have poles for umbrella's? Seemed like a good use to use for her to hold onto while they are moving her. I suppose they could have decorated it & it wouldn't have appeared to be so much of a pole? I'm thinking, I'm pretty sure I've seen something similar in parades, where singers are holding onto poles as the floats are moving if they don't have those special stands made up. It's just the poles tend to be decorated so they don't appear as poles.

Of course, I grew up with Madonna when I was a teenager, so this is nothing.

Well... i read all the responses, and am not going into this in detail..

I have an (almost) 9 year old dd - and we BOTH love this song and personally, i think Miley is a GREAT singer -- i can't see how anyone can dispute that she definately has a nice voice -- listen to some of her new *Miley* music..

She can't be expected to remain HM forever - she is almost 17.. Please, i am sure most of us dressed/acted similar when we were that age -- doing things that i am sure 30-40 year olds would have surely disagreed with.. I think some people *grow up* and forget that.. yes, she is underage, but she hasn't really done anything inappropriate here.. she is dancing - and having a good time, same as lots of other 17 year olds do.. really.

Who are we to so harshly judge someone based on what they are wearing or how they dance??!! From what i can tell, she is a talented young Christian girl -- who loves where she came from, and knows where she wants to be..
Why do so many of us feel we can just rip her down on her way up?? Over clothes or the way she dances? Come on..
Raise your daughters the best you can - and i assure you - if they have a proper head on their shoulders, they will be able to grow up and listen to Miley, see her dance, shake their hips, wear some short shorts and be perfectly nice girls. ;) Which is all we can ask for.

If you don't agree with the video, don't show your kids - turn the channel.

While it may *seem* like stars such as Selena, Demi, etc.. are "toned down" right now -- lets see where they are in 5 years.. I bet Miley will still be around.. ;) She's trying to break out and make a name for herself, and obviously wiht 3 pages here so far talking about her and her one video in discussion - she is succeeding!

If I was going to say something I would have to agree 100%. A video is not going to make my kids bad kids... My girls love the video and dance along when it is on. It's cute. It is about being able to be yourself in a crowd of strangers, not sure how that is a bad thing. JMHO

Wow really?? So you are suppose to grow up with your parents (trust them, lean on them, and kiss them good night every night), but as soon as you are a teenager being close to them is wrong??? Silly.

My DD's love this song...hear it in dance every week, and always ask me to turn our Disney CD off in the car and put on the pop station so they may hear it....but we haven't seen the music video yet.

I had to YouTube it to watch it just now and see what all the fuss is about. Now, I grew up in the 80's - when Madonna was popular - as PP said, but I can definitely see what the fuss is about after watching this. Her shorts were as short as they could physically be without her buttcheek hanging loose and her ****s were pushed up and out of her tank top. If my 16 year old ever tried to leave the house like that I'd certainly put my foot down.

I am in no means a conservative parent. My kids love Harry Potter and wear leotards when the activity calls for it. But Miley isn't at a gymnastics meet, she is in a music video, and she is just looks trashy to me. She is obviously looking to show us that she is growing up, as if we couldn't figure that out on our own

It's just so in-your-face in this video. I personally don't need to see her ****age jiggling around. Just inappropriate IMHO.

I agree that the video is inappropriate for the young disney crowd! I realize that HM is just a character she plays on tv but it is THE character that made her popular. Market the MC music/dance to an older crowd and don't show it on Disney.

I have a friend who is taking her nieces to the MC concert and is concerned about how appropriate it will be for an 8 and 10 year old. I hope it is toned down from the Pole dance at the Music Awards.
When I was growing up kids under 16 didn't go to concerts. What has changed so much that kids that young need to be going? My eldest is 12. She has a few more years before I will allow any concerts. That said, I was surprised at the change in Miley but not completely unexpected. Girls at that age are very aware of their bodies and what those bodies do to others. So add some marketing and this is what you see.

A kind of parent who trusts their kids and has confidence in their parenting that they're raised a well rounded child who will make good decisions.

I take great offense to this.

I was 15 when I started dating my now husband of 5 years. He was 19, getting ready to turn 20. I was a wonderful child, and I was raised well by my parents. I never got in any trouble, I didn't lie, steal, sneak out, etc. I was mature and I made good decisions.

I don't understand why people automatically assume the worst in people, especially when they have NO IDEA what their life is really like.

Really? We're 10 minutes from Giants stadium and the area here in NJ, and I saw many, many concerts before I was 16 (parents dropped us off and picked us up). I think Journey was my first? Anyway, she has a small window to make the transition of a child icon to an adult performer. Only a small percentage make the transformation (what ever happend to Steve from Blues Clues anyway).

So many concerts are now geared to a younger audience. :) My kids have gone to several Wiggles concerts and Doodlebop concerts. They love them! And so do I! :)

Same here. There is a 6 1/2 year age difference between DH and I. I was 17 when we met. He was 23 almost 24. We have been married 6 years. I was a lot better off and better taken care of with him that with boys my own age. He was much more responsible and respcetful.
