What do you think about changing Tom Sawyer Island to Pirate's Lair

At DL they are simply changing a portion of TSI to have a Pirate Lair, it actually sounds like it will be quite fun when it is finished.

Although I used to like TSI, we don't tend to bother going across any more because there's nothing significant to do there. It's a nice enough place, but I feel a bit out of place running around there now

But I don't want the whole of MK to turn into a pirate invested place so that they have to change their name to Pirate Kingdom. Just because there are probably more under 10s who know who Jack Sparrow is over Tom Sawyer, doesn't mean he should be replaced.

I would love it...I have been going to WDW for almost 30 years and have never stepped foot on Tom Sawyer's Island...This would at least get me to it to check it out.

I say leave it alone and make Dicovery Island and River Country Pirate themed. River Country could be Tortuga and then guest could shuttle back and forth from RC to DI in the form of Pirate ships that fire cannons at each other as they pass.

This could even be one of those High priced ticket parks like Discovery Cove.

I agree 100%. That is an excellent use for Discovery Island. I thought they were going to do something with it for that Adventure on the 7 Seas Lagoon Cruise.

Making Discovery Island pirate themed will definitely draw some crowd away from MK (at least for a while). :thumbsup2

Is this somthing that Disney is planning? Or something that is going on at DL and just wondering if they will do it at WDW too? I'm confused to where this idea came from in the first place.

I think this was a "what is your opinion" thread, that someone took a little too seriously. It is happening at DLR, and looks to be a great change/refurb. There are no plans to replicate it at WDW, that have been leaked or announced to the public.
At DLR something had to be done anyways to upgrade the Fantasmic stage, so nothing was not an option.

Granted this is from Wikipedia, which is no guarantee of accuracy, but it appears that they are trying to keep the Mart Twain theme intact:

Officially this proposal has been announced as a two-phase revamp into "Pirate's Lair at Tom Sawyer's Island" based upon stories in "Tom Sawyer" where Tom, Huck and Joe Harper pretend to be pirates on the Mississippi. This change would integrate pirate tie-ins with the original, but updated, Tom Sawyer feel. Originally the re-theming was thought to have been more drastic and specific to the movie. Most of the existing play areas on the island and it's Huck Finn backstory will be incorporated with the new pirate theme, though it's uncertain how this will play out at the moment. [2] Tom Sawyer Island is currently closed, in order for it's extensive redesign and rebranding to be completed for May 2007. "Smuggler's Cove", "Dead Man's Grotto", and "Pirate's Den" are reported to be names of interactive areas to be present.

I love TSI! It is completely Americana. It brings Mark Twains story to life. I also love the DI-RC pirate idea. Correct me if Iam wrong here but I believe back in the 70's when I was a kid DC was called Treasure Island and had a very loosely based pirate theme. If you look carefully you can still see the abandonded pirate ship along the shores of DI.:)

Just wondering what people think about changing Tom Sawyer's Island to Pirate's Lair? Thanks

This may have already been said, but...

There are currently NO plans to change any aspects of WDW's TSI.

Although if they did, the frontier theming could still be kept intact... after all, Disney did film "Davy Crockett and the River Pirates" in 1956 (the river pirate being one Mike Fink... remember the Mike Fink Keelboats?).

I am not sure exactly why they would want to do this. I guess as another tie-in to their movies. I doubt it would increase visitors to MK or WDW, or the amount of money they would spend.

For the same expenditure, they could probably figure out something simple and better for Dinoland than the carnival games, thereby truly increasing the amount of vaction time and money people are willing to spend at WDW. This is the weak aspect of AK, already the park that takes the least amount of vacation to explore.

I wouldn't mind if they incorporated a small section of the island to tie in with Mark Twain's original story....but please, nothing PoTC related for crying out loud. I love TSI because its located right on "The Mississippi" in Frontierland. It all just fits, and if you've read the books Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer, it makes the island that much more special :)

Bear in mind that at Disneyland (where they ARE changing TSI), PotC sits on the Rivers of America and faces TSI - so it really does make a lot more sense over there than it ever would at WDW (where they ARE NOT changing TSI) because our river is fronted by Liberty Square and Frontierland.

Honestly, I'm getting quite sick of all of the pirate stuff. It's everywhere. I know the movies are very popular, and eveyone loves them.

I'm just tired of it. They have their ride, party etc. I think we should leave well enough alone, like the classic stuff like Sawyer Island.

I also agree it would be going overboard with the pirate stuff. A lot of the classics are changing, I hope this doesn't keep up, we will have no originals left!!! They already changed the Tiki room & The Pirates of the Carribean, and The Swiss Family tree house to Tarzans tree house(@ Disneyland - I don't know about WDW, it is Swiss family now):wizard:
