I didn't have homework till I was 11 and at grammar school. I'm shocked how much our grandchildren get and how young it starts.

I don't think we had anything until jr high school (7th grade, 12 years old). They have to pass the stupid STAR tests now so the teachers don't have time to do anything but teach in those subjects

I've been enjoying reading our old thread from just before our cruise till during it. Such a lot of fun and excitement in the posts. Aaaah.

I need to bookmark that, I can't find it again.

Your mom worked and did all that :scared1: We had our big dinner on Wednesday because my parents were on a bowling league on Sundays. It was always fried like fried steak, chicken or pork chops and always potatoes and gravy YUMMY. The rest of the days were different all the time. What is haddock? I really don't have many traditions as far as food in concerned for my kids, I guess I better do something. We do BBQ on the weekends except when we have plans.

You have a different climate so barbies ar great.

Haddock is a white fish. Always my favourite.

My mum was always a hard worker. She worked full time, then Friday evenings was cleaning downstairs time. Saturday morning my dad worked(much longer hours in those days), and mum did the washing which was a long job then, and cleaned the front porch and floors. she usually went off shopping in a local town Saturday afternoon.

Sunday morning she spent cooking Sunday dinner and baking. My dad was unusual for those days in that on Sunday mornings he cleaned the bedrooms and bathroom. Monday evening was ironing night.

Are they like Sats? Our kids take National tests at 7 and 11. Since we started Sats teachers just focus on those to get good results.

We try and keep them busy. I have multiple play dates every week. That is on top of Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, soccer and cheer or dance (who knows which she'll chose this time). So basically the playing is still going on, the mothers and farther just have to organize it a little more. The kids don't come to the door and ask to play, the parents set it up.
Wow, we have neighborhood kids come to the door and ask if Tyler can play. He has to stay in our yard though, and they can play in the backyard without me being there, but if they're in the front I watch. Well, all the kids have moved away though, but we have a couple empty houses on our street that I'm hoping families with kids move into. It's just one of those quiet neighborhoods where all the neighbors know everybody and watch out for things.

No it is a standardized test that measures how well the kids at the school are doing. The highest is a 10 API. I think our school is an 8. They want all the schools to be at an 8 or above, I think, maybe a 7. If they are below for so many years the schools get in trouble and the kids have an option to go to another school that is the district. I think the schools should be accountable but they focus too much on these tests and not other subjects.

Had a chuckle again about Holly and the mouse turd!!!:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
Thanks a lot Marilyn! :rotfl2: I have a HUGE mouse phobia, so I'm constantly cleaning the kitchen floor so I'll easily be able to see if there ever is a mouse turd. Of course, every speck of dirt I see, I imagine it's a mouse turd! :rotfl:

That's how it was when I was little too. The neighbors even disciplined us if they needed to. It's not like that here anymore.

Well it does sound similar to Sats here. The 7 year old ones don't mean much, but the 11 year old ones are used for the kids going to upper school at 11. Also it is supposed to show how a school is doing and not actually testing the kids, but hearing parents talk you would think differently.

I think for me I have never heard the term 'mouse turd'. We say mouse dropping. Turd is usually used for a larger animal!!! :lmao:

OK I had to read some but now I have to go really. I'll try to post some stuff later.

Wow, that really stinks. Just one more reason I want to live in our house until Tyler's grown up. Even though it's tiny, I just love our neighborhood. Of course, that could all change at some point, but for now, it's just right.

I passed some homeless people on the way home and I can't believe where I am today.

Thanks Gaylean... I needed someone to put it into perspective for me... sometimes I just feel  and I let it get to me...

Oh, you too Michelle.

Aaaaaah, no ice cream!!!;)

Thanks Marilyn... but Mom made homemade chocolate chip cookies the other day and I've been trying to cope with those...

Ha ha! Not quite! ;) Darned train woke me up though just now at 6:25am. Oh well, I can easily go back to sleep!

Funny... you did find time to Dis before that... :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Michelle, I hope you aren't being battered by Hanna. Are you hunkered down?

The US Open Tennis matches take place in Queens, NYC......Michelle lives in upstate NY......not the same area. New York is very unique because it has New York City (Manhattan) and the burroughs (Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island), Long Island and upstate New York. Each area is so different. I grew up on Long Island, mostly beaches, then moved into NYC while I was a young adult. Now I'm in PA which is more like upstate NY, very rural.

Thanks Deb!!!

Yes... I live about 130 miles away from the city... NYC that is...

We are getting rain... flash flooding concerns I hear, but I am up on a bit of an incline... the river may overflow, they say...

Nice steady rain mom says... good for the garden (that got killed by all the rain we had in July!!!)

You know...it stopped raining for the summer as soon as my neighbor took her pool down... I miss that pool... :sad2:
