A lot of people seem on edge these days. I know these are tough times, we're all coping as best you can. All you can do is think that maybe she's having a rough time, and crabbing at you made her feel better. Personally, I'd just be grateful that I'm not that miserable, and go on with my day.

You were fine - totally fine and I'm sure you knew that but were rattled by the confrontation. I'm not super-good in a crisis so I tend to try and think through in advance what I should say in situations like this (and I've had a few). My go-to now is "I'm sorry, this must be pretty stressful for you - is there anything I can do to help?" Said sincerely without a snarky tone, it distracts from the immediate issue and is extremely disarming. Since you plan to "dwell" anyway, maybe try to come up with one of your own.
