Was I in the wrong?

You were in the right, and the "proof" is in the fact that the coupon worked for you when you checked out.

A lot of people seem on edge these days. I know these are tough times, we're all coping as best you can. All you can do is think that maybe she's having a rough time, and crabbing at you made her feel better. Personally, I'd just be grateful that I'm not that miserable, and go on with my day.

You did nothing wrong at all. The older woman was completely wrong.
It frustrates me to no end when people get up in other people’s business. I absolutely hate it! Before Covid I’d get random people (usually men) at the store telling me I needed to smile. That never put me in a good mood, I can tell you!

Yesterday a woman came up to my sister in law to ask why her daughter wasn’t wearing a mask. Her daughter is 10 months old and was in a stroller. She can’t even walk, and she’s supposed to be wearing a mask?!?
I have many other examples, but my point is strangers need to mind their own business! Unless they’re coming up to give a compliment or a kind word, they need to keep their mouths shut!

Fastest way to get the side/evil eye 😒 from me is to tell me to smile. Why do people think that’s going to make the person smile? News flash ... it doesn’t!

A 10 month old? 😷 No way does a 10 month old look like they are over 2 years old.

I’ll admit, I do call out line cutters. I’m not mean, but I will point out where the line starts. Sometimes it is innocently not paying attention to your surroundings. But unless you’re actions are going to cause harm to someone I keep it 🤐.

Nah you were fine. I've done it with manufacturer coupons for Purex detergent and I know they put them on scents, not all scents may be in stock though. Mine is usually something like $3 off...would that be more worth it for some people

Anyway heat of the moment is one thing but sitting here I'd have probably wanted it to go down like "I appreciate your concern but I believe I'll be fine" and walk far far away from the irate person. BTW I feel like this story belongs just right on that one thread about stressed out people and going off lol.

Cheese balls are a staple at my family's Christmas (sadly this year will be missed :( ), them things are important ::yes::

if store staff was putting coupons on things, that is a totally different scenario than the OP.
We don’t actually know that. It could be either the peelie or one’s applied by the store. I assumed the latter. I’ve seen both. I don’t have issue with taking the coupon to use on my item if the one I want doesn’t have a coupon.

It was a peelie put on by the manufacturer. Not all of the cheeses had it, it was random. Like PP stated, it think they had multiple shipments at the case and the ones with the coupon were done during a different run by the manufacturer. I took it off a port wine cheeseball (that flavor had the most peelies) but I could have easily taken it off one of the other ones. The only flavor that didn't have the peelie was the sharp cheddar. My guess is the sharp cheddar peelie's were already taken by earlier customers. People like saving money! Why take one without a coupon?

If the coupon worked, then you were fine and she was just looking to pick a fight.

You can always flag down an employee and ask them but their answer certainly would have been "The coupons are good on any variety so go right ahead and take it off one of the other cheeseballs."

Very, very true.

Naturally, I called dh after I got in the car headed home. He laughed and said somehow it reminded him of the Geico commercial with the aunt problem and Aunt Bonnie looking in the fridge yelling "expired." He felt she just was looking for someone to pick at. Maybe he was right. :confused3

It's not an official term by any stretch but I call people like this "reason collectors" because they are ALWAYS miserable and spend their time looking for external things to justify their personality & behavior and keep a nice little collection to be shared with people whether they want to know about their issues or not. Weird but common hobby, not a fan.

I stop treating someone with extra respect for the sole reason s/he is my elder in terms of age if that person acts in a rude or obnoxious way.

To me, if a coupon or sticker is good for an item with qualifying attributes such as brand and flavor or size then it is transferable to any item on the shelf with the qualifying attributes.

It's typically a mixture of a soft cheese (cream cheese) and a different cheese (we like cheddar) blended with a few spices and rolled in to a ball covered with nuts. You let it sit at room temp to easily spread on crackers.
I don’t believe that these have emigrated to the U.K.! We have tiered cheese cakes and Camembert that we bake in the oven, but not this concoction...... yet! Many moons ago, when I was a young thing, I attended a large formal luncheon, of maybe 20 people seated at a long table. The cheese course was a truckle of Stilton. My (clearly negligent) parents had never taught me to scoop Stilton, rather than cut (and in my defence it was a rather shallow, well used Stilton), so to gasps of horror around the table, I cut, well tried to, rather than scooped. I still remember the hot flush of embarrassment to this day! I wonder how I would have tackled a cheese ball!😂

We've got cheese logs in Yankeeland too. Same thing, different shape.

This is so interesting to find out!

It's the first thing my family puts out for Christmas to snack on :) flavored crackers, club crackers and triscuits are used in our family to spread the cheese on and my aunt (who is the family member who makes it) uses these cute themed cheese spreaders like this:

Mine always has SALMON in it! :fish:

AND, it sits on top of a bowl of ice when served, because it may be out longer than food safe.

:hug:You were fine - totally fine and I'm sure you knew that but were rattled by the confrontation. I'm not super-good in a crisis so I tend to try and think through in advance what I should say in situations like this (and I've had a few). My go-to now is "I'm sorry, this must be pretty stressful for you - is there anything I can do to help?" Said sincerely without a snarky tone, it distracts from the immediate issue and is extremely disarming. Since you plan to "dwell" anyway, maybe try to come up with one of your own. :flower3:

The true diffuse the Canadian way!

Oh good grief. I asked a legit question to something I initially felt I was right about, but dwelled on it and had second thoughts. I was verifying that it was acceptable to do what I did.

Of course I cannot tell anyone not to respond. I said why respond when you have already said reading this and responding was waste of your time and energy? That is totally not the same as telling someone they cannot respond. If you don't see that, then we will have to agree to disagree.

I wish you a good evening.

Donald is a newbie, DO NOT DWELL ON HIM! But do dwell on my SALMON BALL, just saying..

Manufacturers put coupons on things to sell them. You were fine. I get it though, I’m a dweller too. I still get upset or question things from years and years ago.

You were not wrong. And....life is just too short to worry about what some crazy old lady thinks about you saving a dollar on a cheese ball.
