This is crazy to me. You've never been able to just walk in a Costco here without showing your card. All of our stores are always busy, the business one probably isn't all the time, but if I can't go at open to shop I'll wait until I can.
I live in the land of Costco and am surprised my normal store didn't have the scanners when I went for my eye Dr appt in June. And that's my one gripe, you can't "sneak" in the exit with your card to go to optical any more. I'd always explain where I was going. They put chairs across the check outs not being used so you have to either go through a crowded check out or self check.
Prior to scanning, they didn't just let you walk into my Costco either - you needed to flash your card. But, it didn't really create a backup to get in. If you were digging through your wallet for your card or ID, you weren't blocking the huge entrance, I'd just walk around that person and flash my card -- or if my wife was already inside, I could say that I just grabbed a shopping cart and my wife and kids already went inside and nobody ever denied me access to the store. Now though, think of it more like getting into Disney World where if the people in front of you can't figure out their fingerprints or their tickets, you are now stuck behind them until they figure it out and you can scan your membership. It isn't quite that bad, but I was surprised when I showed up and there was a group of people 5-6 deep that were waiting to scan their cards - and it wasn't at "rope drop" for Costco
