This is crazy to me. You've never been able to just walk in a Costco here without showing your card. All of our stores are always busy, the business one probably isn't all the time, but if I can't go at open to shop I'll wait until I can.

I live in the land of Costco and am surprised my normal store didn't have the scanners when I went for my eye Dr appt in June. And that's my one gripe, you can't "sneak" in the exit with your card to go to optical any more. I'd always explain where I was going. They put chairs across the check outs not being used so you have to either go through a crowded check out or self check.

Prior to scanning, they didn't just let you walk into my Costco either - you needed to flash your card. But, it didn't really create a backup to get in. If you were digging through your wallet for your card or ID, you weren't blocking the huge entrance, I'd just walk around that person and flash my card -- or if my wife was already inside, I could say that I just grabbed a shopping cart and my wife and kids already went inside and nobody ever denied me access to the store. Now though, think of it more like getting into Disney World where if the people in front of you can't figure out their fingerprints or their tickets, you are now stuck behind them until they figure it out and you can scan your membership. It isn't quite that bad, but I was surprised when I showed up and there was a group of people 5-6 deep that were waiting to scan their cards - and it wasn't at "rope drop" for Costco :D

My Costco photo was taken almost 20 years ago, it's so small I don't know how they tell anything- but I guess that's more a reflection of the fact my Costco is apparently one of those that doesn't really care? They don't scan at the door (yet) and only scan the card at checkout, not really looking at photos... probably gonna have to get an updated pic if they start scanning at the door and actually looking at the photos...
My Costco photo has my younger daughter in the photo with me, lol. From when she was 4 (she is now 12 and taller than me). Thus far when they’ve looked at it, they’ve barely glanced when in line to use self checkout.

Costco runs their business the same as they did 20 years ago. Sam’s Club runs circles around them in 2024 because they have innovated and changed for the better over the last decade. I never would have expected to throw shade on Costco, but it’s the truth. I used to hate Sam’s with a passion and love Costco, but it has completely flip-flopped

Here’s my take:

Sam’s doesn’t care about membership sharing because they’ve streamlined their shopping process to the point they can be massively profitable based purely on volume. Scan and Go, curbside pickup and synced store/online inventory have eliminated shrinkage and made the shopping experience more enjoyable. It’s a gamechanger that gets better every visit. I didn’t even have to show my phone receipt last time I bought something there.

Costco has decided to implement draconian measures that treat every member as a potential thief. You are “guilty until proven membership”, and it’s just no longer enjoyable to shop there.

You used to be able to say that Costco had superior private label products, but I’m not convinced any longer. Most of the Member’s Mark products can hold their own against Kirkland at this point.

Costco’s tech systems are massively holding them back
agree 100%

While I definitely fall in the Potato category, @mickeytopolino in this context DP was for Data Point. That's the most common usage on this thread.

I could also get behind if
OP = original poster
PP = previous poster
that
DP = dreaded poster or delightful poster
Again context sensitive and usually depends on if you're on the DIS or other boards. I know which would pop into my head on this thread :love:
Thank you so much! I tried googling it for a few days and couldn’t find anything haha! Thank you!

All this time I thought it was Disney Husband, Disney Son, Disney Daughter LOL
It's early Internet abbreviation slang that's not really used anymore. Using it here gives it the context of Disney Daughter, Disney Son, Disney Potato, etc which is probably why it's still around in these parts

Agree 100%! There are two things I cannot get at Sams that Costco has, and my dd uses Costco for gas. But I may stock up and finally cancel my membership this year. Sams does things so much better.

You guys crack me up! DP - Dearest Potato :lmao:

In what world would you use Dearest Potato??? :rotfl:

DP = Data Points
OP = Original Poster
OOP = Out of Pocket
Our laptop is my dearest potato, lol. It’s nowhere near top of the line, but it gets what we need done.

Our trip to London is in a few days. I’m trying to finish up all the food in the fridge. We are having some unique combinations for the next few days, lol.

We also were offered ‘upgrade yourself’ on Aer Lingus. I just offered a little over the minimum bid on our flight out and we got it. I was surprised because even with the additional cost it was way below what they were selling business class tickets outright for.

I always read it as dear husband, dear son, dear daughter etc. I’ve never heard any one ever say Disney husband, Disney son or Disney daughter in real life, so I never think that when I read DH DS or DD. Plus there are lots of places on these boards not referring to Disney that people still use those abbreviations.
