Unable to use purchased points?

I purchased points from a member for 4 units during a long weekend at the end of October. I have received the confirmations for each unit. My problem is that one couple who planned to travel with us may not be able to go. Even though they offered to pay for the unit, I wanted to know if there is anything else I can do.

That is between you and the person that you rented points from. It usually is a good idea to hash out these type of details before you rent. Call that person and see what he/she is willing to do.

The DVC member actually owns and controls the reservation, so you would need to check with the member to see what they could/would do. Did you have a rental contract? Some members have a 45 day cancellation policy, but that can be impacted by other issues (banking deadlines, etc).

October is a busy DVC month due to F&W Festival and MNSSHP, so maybe they can re-rent it.

Good luck!

Sounds like you are talking about rented points. It all depends on the person renting the points and what your agreements are with him/her. Most of the time once the points are rented they're yours to use until they expire. Many DVC owners will cancel the reservation for you and re-schedule it but it really all depends on when those points are due to expire. That's the risk you take as a renter. This is one reason why, when I rent, I always make sure payment is in full and up front. Most of the time those points are probably close to the time they are about to expire when the renter finds out that they can't go. At least if you cancel that one reservation now you're outside of the 30 day holding period where the points would go into a holding account.

Y-ASK

I think it is not the person who owns the points problem, but the OP's. You could try to rent the unit, or get another couple to come along. You still have some time to get rid of it. Otherwise, the couple who changed the plans should be responsible enough to pay for it. Good luck.

Correct.
You could try to rent the unit
Incorrect. OP doesn't have any points or the ability to do anything at all with the ressie. OP must contact the member they rented from and tell them what happened. It may not be a problem for the DVC owner; may just be a simple matter of cancelling the reservation. In fact, the owner may be able to re-rent the ressie at a premium now that virtually everything is sold out during that period.

The option of OP also getting someone to take over the ressie is another possibility.

But the first step is to contact the DVC owner ASAP and get working on a solution. If you wait, you risk losing the money.

One of the things that most renters do not understand, is that the owner of the points might be outside of their banking deadlines. If that is the case, there will probably be no way to refund, because those points run the risk of being totally lost to the owner. In this case, it is essential that you call the person you rented from ASAP to find out if there are any options. If there is no way to refund for that room, then you need to either eat the loss or find another group to go with you.

One common/consistent misunderstanding about renting is that no renters are renting points- they are renting a reservation from a DVC member. DVC points are of absolutley NO use to anyone except the DVC member who controls them in his/her own account. The only transactions possible using our board are to rent a reservation or to make a transfer. Non-members cannot be involved in a transfer by definition- that can only happen between two members. Even renters who are already members will have no control over a reservation- that control will always remain with the member who made the reservation.

Even though the reservation is in the name of the renter, it is under the complete control of the member until check-in. Any changes (cancellation, resort, room type, dates, reservation name) must be made by the member- the renter cannot access MS to change any of those issues. Some renters have had success calling the resort (and even MS) to make requests, but no other control is available.

Any changes made at this time- even if the OP does find another renter- will still have to be made by the member (the OP would have no way to change the name on the reservation).

As already suggested, the first step at this point should be to contact the member directly (and as soon as possible).
