I have been wearing UGGs for about 20 years (and I still have and can wear my original pair). I think they were more popular in the beach areas before other parts of the country even heard about them. For an adult, the investment is worth it because of the quality. They are by far the most comfortable shoe I have ever owned, but I can only wear them during the winter because I am in So. Cal and it is just too hot other times (so they last a lot longer).
My DS had baby UGGs when he was little and also loved them (price was really cheap for those) but I stopped buying them when he outgrew the Baby version (I would not pay even the child's price for the regular boots....the kids just outgrow them so fast).
My DD is on her 2nd pair now and she can still wear her original pair even though they are 2 sizes smaller because the sheepskin inside adjusts to growing feet. I waited until she was much older before buying them just so that she wouldn't outgrow them too fast.
For a 3 year old, in my opinion, knock offs would be fine. For an adult, I would consider it a long-term investment and go with the quality of UGGs.
P.S. The prices for UGGs are consistent across retailers and most have agreements with UGG, so many times they won't allow discounts. I got lucky and got a 20% discount code to work once, but many times it comes back saying that the discount code is not valid on that item. So I wouldn't necessarily blame Nordstoms for the pricing.
