Any one here have experience with being diabetic and trying to eat low carb? How did you make it through induction.

My DH and I are on 2ay3 of induction and yesterday he could not get his blood sugar above 120 no matter how much protien he ate. We finally broke down and fed him a banana and then later a glass of milk. He is really upset that he won't get to pee purple. lol ;)

Has anyone here been successful in staying on induction even though they are a diabetic?

I can't answer your question, but I just saw last night a success story on Atkins.com about a woman who had type two diabetes. She did Atkins for and in the first three months, lost 99 pounds and got her sugar levels under control, without medications. It has cured her from what I read. You may want to look that up.

:)

I'm a diabetic (type 2) and I have had PHENOMONAL success with low carbing. WHy does your DH want his blood sugar above 120?? Normal ranges are between 80-140. AS long as he doesn't drop below 80 he should be fine. I actually had to decrease my meds by 3/4's when I went low carb. I am hoping to be off meds by October! Low carbing is the ONLY thing that I have tried that keeps my Blood Sugar under control. I know that there are others here on this board as well that have had great succcess with Atkins and diabetes. Kath's hubby is one of them. I'm sure when she gets back to the boards she will post on this subject. His story is great! Not only has my blood sugar been drastically reduced, but all my other blood work is looking great as a result of eating the Atkins way!

While I myself am not diabetic, my BIL started Atkins after seeing my success, and has stopped needing insulin altogether!

His doctor is ecstatic.

:)

actually normal (non diabetic) fasting blood sugar levels are 64-110. We could barely get him to 75 all day no matter what he ate, and this was with out taking his Glucophage for 2 days prior.

He is just miserable- no energy, dizzy, grupiness, hands shaking-so we have adjusted his diet to include some more carbs (still less than 40 per day (still no meds) was just wondering if anyone else had symptopms like this.

I guess I should have been more explicit when I posted "normal" blood sugar numbers. You are correct- 64-110 is the normal range. What I meant by posting the numbers was that most diabetics Dr.s like to see their bs range between 80-140.

What is happening to your DH is what happened to me too. It was because the meds I was taking were too strong for what my carb intake was. When I started Atkins, my blood sugar was dropping way low- like your DH, that's why I had the meds adjusted. It was kinda weird- I'd taken the old dosage and because it was too potent, my numbers would drop too low- down to 38- 40 range. Even my cutting the dosage in half did not work because I had remnants of the old dosage in my system still. When my bs would drop under 78 or so, I would get the dizziness, shaking etc. SO- I went to the Dr. she re-adjusted my meds . With the re-adjustment of the meds- my blood sugar would still drop to 68- sometimes lower- but the shakiness/dizziness went away because I didn't have the build up of the higher meds in my system anymore- they wore out over a period of time.

It will take a little time for your DH's body to adjust. It's good you've just started. I'd suggest you journal all foods eaten and bs readings. Be sure to do it with times too. Take that info to your hubby's Dr. and show him the results of the new low carb life and ask him to readjust DH's meds- it may be time for a different med all together (it does happen that fast!). Also- while you're at it, get his blood drawn so you can see where his cholestoroltriglycerides etc. are. that way you can see where else following Atkins is helping. If you do this you should be prepared for the Dr. to discourage you- mine did, but because I had a journal of what I had eaten and what my bs readings were, she lost her ability to argue the poitn with me. I told her I wanted to see how this worked for a few months- that it wouldn't kill me in that amount of time, and she agreed.

Wanna know what's really weird? As I am amswering your question- my bs has dropped low! Just tested it- 58! I was getting the shakes- dizzy grumpy like you said. I haven't had this in a long time. Maybe it's time to get the meds readjusted again.

BTW- when this first happened to me, I did what you did- drank a soda or had fruit- Katholyn suggested raising my bs with something other then that- she suggested nuts. That worked after I got the meds adjusted.

This will pass for DH- some of the symptoms could just be par for the course of induction- others because of the diabetes.that's where it gets tricky. Good luck.

it sounds like "induction sickness."

I just started Atkins 6 days ago and I felt dizzy, nauseous, etc. for the first 2 days or so. My dad is diabetic and totally addicted to sweets, etc. His diabetes is out of control. I know if he started Atkins, he'd be feeling nasty the first few days.

Maybe it'll pass in a day or so. I hope so!!! I wish my Dad cared enough about his health to at least try it like your dh is!
