I guess I should have been more explicit when I posted "normal" blood sugar numbers. You are correct- 64-110 is the normal range. What I meant by posting the numbers was that most diabetics Dr.s like to see their bs range between 80-140.
What is happening to your DH is what happened to me too. It was because the meds I was taking were too strong for what my carb intake was. When I started Atkins, my blood sugar was dropping way low- like your DH, that's why I had the meds adjusted. It was kinda weird- I'd taken the old dosage and because it was too potent, my numbers would drop too low- down to 38- 40 range. Even my cutting the dosage in half did not work because I had remnants of the old dosage in my system still. When my bs would drop under 78 or so, I would get the dizziness, shaking etc. SO- I went to the Dr. she re-adjusted my meds . With the re-adjustment of the meds- my blood sugar would still drop to 68- sometimes lower- but the shakiness/dizziness went away because I didn't have the build up of the higher meds in my system anymore- they wore out over a period of time.
It will take a little time for your DH's body to adjust. It's good you've just started. I'd suggest you journal all foods eaten and bs readings. Be sure to do it with times too. Take that info to your hubby's Dr. and show him the results of the new low carb life and ask him to readjust DH's meds- it may be time for a different med all together (it does happen that fast!). Also- while you're at it, get his blood drawn so you can see where his cholestoroltriglycerides etc. are. that way you can see where else following Atkins is helping. If you do this you should be prepared for the Dr. to discourage you- mine did, but because I had a journal of what I had eaten and what my bs readings were, she lost her ability to argue the poitn with me. I told her I wanted to see how this worked for a few months- that it wouldn't kill me in that amount of time, and she agreed.
Wanna know what's really weird? As I am amswering your question- my bs has dropped low! Just tested it- 58! I was getting the shakes- dizzy grumpy like you said. I haven't had this in a long time. Maybe it's time to get the meds readjusted again.
BTW- when this first happened to me, I did what you did- drank a soda or had fruit- Katholyn suggested raising my bs with something other then that- she suggested nuts. That worked after I got the meds adjusted.
This will pass for DH- some of the symptoms could just be par for the course of induction- others because of the diabetes.that's where it gets tricky. Good luck.
