Twin names

We just found out this morning that we're having twin girls! :cutie::cutie:

So now we've got to find names for these kiddos. We already have on girl's name picked out for sure. It starts with an E. There's only one other girl's name that we both really like and it starts with an E as well.

So what's your opinion on twin names -- should they both be very separate and distinctive or is it OK to be a little matchy-matchy?

I always thought that they need to be very separate. DH has younger brothers that are twins and their names rhyme and you just end up ALWAYS lumping them together that way. Or, everyone calls them "the twins"... which I just HATE. I don't want them always grouped together like that; I really want them to be their own person.

But in a way I also feel a little bit silly eliminating a name that we like just because it starts with a certain letter. Altering the spelling isn't an option either as both DH and I like names to be spelled their traditional, classic way instead of some silly, invented spelling.

separate... they are both different people... trust me you dont want to do themes... its hard when your yelling at them if they are too similar... all mine start with "A" stupid stupid move...

separate!!!

Anyone I have known who is a twin has HATED being matchy with their twin sibling. They like having their own identities. The novelty of being a twin seems to wear off quickly.

So many great names out there = surely you can find a great one that compliments vs. matches the one you already have picked out.

If you wouldn't mind sharing what the name is, I am sure that we can all help you out to come up a good counter part.

(And I agree with the "all A" family...that would be me and my sibling, too.)

I had step-cousins who were twin girls and their names were Amber and Brianna. Baby A and Baby B...

DH and I had an agreement where he would name the girl and I would name the boy. We couldn't veto eachother's choices either...But we were NOT seeing eye to eye on names, this was the best way for us to avoid fights.

First of all, congrats on the twin girls!!! My twin girls are turning 10 in one month. Where did the time go???

At the time, we didn't worry too much about twin names. We had names picked that had family meaning. I loved the names when the girls were born, and I still do. It wasn't until after the twins were born that we realized that inadvertently we had done something "cutesy" not just to the twins, but to all our kids. Our last name starts with an "N", and our kids names start with "J", "K", "L", and "M". Totally not planned.

As for not wanting them to be "the twins"... well, it's going to happen, no matter how hard you try for it not to. Especially with same sex twins. It's not a bad thing, and as long as you dress them individually, don't treat them as a unit, others around you will get with the program eventually.

What names are you considering naming the? I don't think it matters what you are going to name them. They are going to be there own person.

I have identical twin daughters and their names are very distinct and separate.

I also rarely ever dressed them alike, much to the dismay of many of my family and friends.

I grew up with identical twin aunts who not only had rhyming names but also always dressed alike. Even as adults, none of their siblings can tell them apart and just call them "the twins" as if they're one single entity. I wanted to avoid that with my kids.

I don't see a problem with them both starting with the same letter, it more depends on the name itslef. Emma & Elizabeth sound cute (just two "E" names I like) while Emma & Emily are too similar.

I wouldn't do matchy-matchy names but I would do something to link them, even if it were just me who knew the link.

Walter and Elias (if boys)
Michelle and Eleanor (first lady names)
Elizabeth and Mary (Pride and Prejudice)
Aurora and Jasmine (princesses)
Elizabeth and Diana (again, princesses)
Hazel and Ida (my grandmamas)

Congratulations! :tigger:

no suggestions and I prefer distinct names actually
my relatives names all their kids with "B" names
and some one else i Know...Jack Daniel get it?? Not really funny to me, but they like it and thats what counts..........

I have identical nephews and they have names that start with J. Very confusing. I once met twins named Bridget and Gidget...how about that :rotfl2:

Oh and congrats!!!!

If I had twins I pick separate and different. No rhyming and no same letter even. I wouldn't link them either. I'd just pick 2 names that I love.

I'm glad I did not have twins because my 2 girl names are "H" names: Hunter and Hadley. Not sure I would do 2 "H" names because I dislike that sort of thing.

Good luck during your pregnancy and I hope it is a very easy, healthy one and same for your labor and delivery!

Thanks for the input. :goodvibes We've got plenty of time to come up with a second name and I'm sure we'll find something that we like... just nothing from the social security index of popular names is standing out to me. The 2 names we have so far (DD and one of the babies') were both popular in the 1910s so I want to stick around that era for the 3rd name. So feel free to throw out some ideas!!

DD is named Violet. One of the babies will be named Eleanor Rose. The other E name that both DH & I like is Eliza. I just realized this now -- they're both El- names. Maybe that's not such a good idea. They're both going to have R- middle names as well since the rest of us do.

DH has already vetoed Amelia, Hazel (my FAVE!!!) and Josephine. He's contemplating Matilda and Cordelia.

Who wants to hit me with some period name suggestions? :)

Oh and congrats!!!!

DH has a coworker who has an "irish twin" sibling... they were in the same grade in school. His name is Jack. Her name is Jill. He said it was HORRIBLE growing up!

Lillian is from the time period and since your other girls have flower names(Violet and the middle name of the other baby being Rose).

I think, while the names may start w/ the same letter, they may or may not be "matchy-matchy". It just depends on the names.

Like, "Elizabeth" & "Emily" aren't too matchy, but "Emily" & "Emma" may be.

We have an Elizabeth, and I really like "e" names for girls, so my 2nd girl was going to be "Erin", & my 3rd girl was going to be "Emily". Alas, our 2nd & 3rd were boys! ;)

If the 2 names you both like happen to begin w/ the same letter, I would just go with it!

And I do like family names that "go together" in some way - even if it's just in a way that DH & I know, like another poster said.

As an aside, when I was a kid, I used to want to twins, & I was going to name them "Patrick" & "Patricia". :lmao:

Edited to add... I just saw your update! I love Eleanor Rose! (It was another "e" name I liked, but DH didn't...) And I also like to stick w/ the same time period & style. We did that w/ our kids' names as well.

Agreed.

Eleanor and Eliza are great names and stand alone by themselves. Those two names do not sound matchy matchy to me, which I would avoid if I were having twins.

Charlotte
Elizabeth
Evelyn
Julia
Lillian
Vivian

And I also like Eliza!
