Travel Ins.?

I have not gotten travel insurance for our upcoming cruise. Our medical insurance will cover us outside of the US so we didn't need the medical coverage often included. We are flying in the day before to try to avoid any travel delays that could cause us to miss the boat. We don't have any aging/elderly/sick relatives that we are worried about. Of course, anything can happen, but the odds seem relatively low.

My biggest reason for NOT taking the travel insurance is the lack of full disclosure and the lack of full coverage. I've read through both DCL and a few third-party offerings and they say things like "covered medical reasons" without ever explaining what would be covered and what wouldn't. Then there is the small type that says that full explanations would be described in the policy, which sounds to me like you have to buy it before you know what you are getting. This is not acceptable to me.

Finally, the policies that I've read don't appear to cover the full cost of the trip but will only reimburse a certain amount. Pffft! I'll take my chances. We won't be broke if we lose our gamble.

I thought that I would definately get insurance at first, but after doing some research, I found out that my health insurance includes any medical assistance over seas and also includes transportation to a medical facility if necessary. As for the trip cancellation part of the insurance, what I have recently read on the DIS boards is that if you cancel your cruise without insurance, you will only be charged 25.00 per passenger if you rebook right away. Has anyone double checked this information about canceling last minute without insurance? I would have NO trouble rebooking again if I had to cancel at the last minute!

I never took insurance until our 1st cruise March 2001. Until then I always felt short of being in a coma DH and I could drag our sick bodies on vacation. Having kids has changed that. DD has been hospitalized 3 times for uncontrollable vomiting which comes out of nowhere. We found out DS is allergic to penicillian the hard way-he had an allergic reaction to oxicillian and we had to call 911 because he had a seizure. He even had some type of reaction on our WDW/DCL vacation May 2002 and we almost had to take him to a quick care center. Kids illnesses seem to come out of nowhere and they can be very sick very quickly. We are going to take it again for our upcoming vacation-even though we're going without the kids, one of their unforseen illnesses could prevent us from going or cut our vacation short.

We took it even though our medical insurance says that they cover us world wide. I'm one of those that would rather be safe than sorry. I would be really dissapointed if something happened on the way to our cruise and we didn't make it in time.

I never thought much about it either way...we always book thru AAA and travel insurance is included. I WILL ALWAYS GET IT NOW. In Nov,1999 we had just arrived in WDW---that night, the phone rang and it was my parents...my brother had just been killed in a car crash...we went immediately to the airport and flew home...we got all our money back with no problems. Had we not had insurance, we would have been out $3000. You never know when something horrible and unexpected will happen. It is not just medical care that is included...you must consider the cost of the trip, tickets, hotel. I say definitely get it.

We got it through CSA, never had to use it, but I would probably do it again, just for peace of mind. Otherwise, I'd be fretting over everyone being safe and healthy.

On other trips we never thought about it but like Tay N Evie's Mom we are now traveling with a 14 month old and when they are that little you just never know!

We will be traveling as a family group and will all definitely get insurance. We feel ~ better safe for a few bucks than sorry!

tlt.....sorry.....that is so sad :(

The following Eileen Ogintz column from 6/23/02. This will especially interest the Eastern cruisers because it specifically mentions the abominable health care facilities on St. Maartin. Even those of you who have checked with your insurance carriers to see if foreign medical care is "covered" should be asking some tough questions of them after reading this article. For example, will your insurance carrier fly you and your child immediately to Miami or another acceptable medical center if you are not satisfied or happy with the local health facilities? I would want that specifically mentioned in writing before I would assume that they would.

I view the trip insurance the same way I do my car insurance. I hope to never have to use it, but would rather pay for it and not use it than to need it and not have it!
