Does anyone know what time the DCL transfer from Port Orleans Riverside to Port Canaveral leaves at? Also, am I allowed to carry my luggage on the bus and take it to the port? I don't trust their luggage handling service; I fear that they'll lose my luggage.

I am staying at AKL on a land sea package. I was told the busses begin to board around noon and it is about a 1 hour ride to the ship. Luggage must be stored, and is sent directly to the ship from the bus...

I'm not on the land and sea package, and I'm staying at a moderate resort. Does that change anything?

Luggage must be stored, and is sent directly to the ship from the bus...

So I am not allowed to carry it on the bus? That's not good, since I don't trust their luggage handling service at all. What happens if I attempt to carry luggage onto the bus? Will I be denied boarding, or will the grudgingly allow it?

At some point you have to give up your luggage. Unless you pack very light it is NOT going to go on the bus. The buses are full and there is no place on them to store big luggage..

And then when you get to the port, your luggage is taken to the cabin without you....

Relax... they do this a lot, your luggage will be fine.

But they lose a lot of luggage. I'd not want to take that risk. So, are you saying that if I attempt to bring luggage on the bus I'd be denied boarding, with no way to get to the port? I really wish I that I didn't let my friend sign up for the DCL transfer, since it sounds to me like a bad deal.

I should also ask another question. What clothing is sold on the ship (Disney Wonder)? Do they sell formal clothing? Or is it limited to things like swimsuits and Disney logo clothing? I ask so that in case they lose my luggage, I know whether or not I can buy clothing on the ship. I don't want to waste an entire port day and miss all my excursions buying clothing.

Where are you getting this "they lose a lot of luggage" from? I have never heard lots of DCL lost luggage horror stories... (It's a boat, where's it going?)

Here's the deal.... If your luggage can fit in the seat with you then I guess you can carry it on. If not, it goes under the bus. You don't get to take up extra seats or block the aisle to "protect" your luggage. That would endanger the other passengers to "protect" your luggage. So yes, I would think that you and your luggage will be standing on the side of the road watching the bus go bye bye. (After this scene your friend is probably going without you LOL!)

Now, no matter what once you get to the port they take it away! They then deliver it to your cabin. There really is no place for you to store your luggage once you get on until you get access to your cabin (and the ship was not designed for you to haul your suitcaseses around behind you) You don't get to go directly to the cabins on boarding. They keep them closed until the stewards have cleaned them.

Just out of curiosity what do you have that is valuable it cannot be out of your sight? (and can you get it all in a 22" carryon because otherwise you have to trust the airline with this treasure)

I am referring to the luggage either never getting to Port Canaveral, or going on the wrong ship.

As for where I read about it, I've seen it posted on the Internet. I read about one Disney cruise in 2001 where they had to cancel formal night because they lost so much luggage.

Here's the deal.... If your luggage can fit in the seat with you then I guess you can carry it on. If not, it goes under the bus.

So then in other words, I can take the luggage myself to the bus, and then they can put it under the bus? That would make me feel better since at least I would know that it goes on the right bus. Can I then remove it myself from under the bus and take it to the port myself so that I know that it gets there.

But I thought that you just said that I can put it under the bus myself, rather than trusting their luggage handling service.

Now, no matter what once you get to the port they take it away!

But if I am able to take it to the port myself, at least I will know that it gets to the port. And then all I have to trust them with is getting it onto the right ship.

I wasn't asking to do that. I was just asking about taking it myself on the bus, rather than trusting their luggage service, and then taking it to the port myself. I realize that I have no choice but to accept their baggage handling from the port to the ship. That is just one step, so my luggage is less likely to get lost doing that.

Unfortunately, I have no choice but to accept the airline's baggage handling because of the carryon restrictions. Beleive me, if there was an alternative, I'd do it.

As for what would be in it: it would be mostly clothes, which I will need for the cruise. I've been told that they do not sell any formal clothes on the ship, and there is not much to be bought in Nassau (plus, I don't want to miss my excursions and waste the entire day shopping anyway), so if my luggage is lost I'm in a lot of trouble.

OK. I was over on the cruise board and you are posting the exact same questions there and getting the exact same responses. I am not sure what you are hoping, that one of us will say "Yes you can carry your luggage with you at all times" Well if it's tiny maybe, but otherwise.....

You have lots of choices. (I can pack for a four day cruise in a 20" carryon and I am a female) You don't need formal clothes on the four day cruise. I am going on this cruise this summer. I just looked at my documents. I am not packing formal wear...

Now, Disney uses thier own dedicated port so your luggage is NOT going to another boat....

You seem to have found one horror story from FIVE years ago and are fixated on it. I'll give you something new. My mother and I got to Rome Italy a few years ago and USAir had failed to load an ENTIRE cart of luggage under the plane. Guess what we survived the 24 hours and the luggage showed up on the next plane (which happened to be the next day) Pack a small over the shoulder carryon with your personal items and ONE change of clothes. You will be fine

I am getting conflicting information.

You have lots of choices. (I can pack for a four day cruise in a 20" carryon and I am a female)

How am I supposed to pack a suit in a 20" carryon without it being wrinkled? And by the way, I am male, not female.

You don't need formal clothes on the four day cruise. I am going on this cruise this summer. I just looked at my documents. I am not packing formal wear...

I have a Palo reservation, so I will need formal wear for that. And I beleive that I need formal wear for Night 2. And, without my luggage, all I would have is whatever I am wearing (probably shorts), and whatever I have in my carryon bag (which would probably just be a swimsuit, and things like that), so I would have nothing that is appropriate for dinner on any night, and certainly nothing that I can wear for Palo or for Night 2.

Now, Disney uses thier own dedicated port so your luggage is NOT going to another boat....

But if I have to reliquish my luggage at the resort, it might never make it to Port Canaveral at all.

You seem to have found one horror story from FIVE years ago and are fixated on it.

It's more than just that one horror story. I have heard a lot of other stories of luggage being lost. And I have heard stories of luggage falling into the water when being loaded (but I don't know if that was true, or just trying to scare people).

I'll give you something new. My mother and I got to Rome Italy a few years ago and USAir had failed to load an ENTIRE cart of luggage under the plane. But that was just 1 day. Unfortunately, if my luggage does not get on the ship the first day, it means I won't have the luggage at all during the cruise, since there is otherwise no way to get it on the ship. So, unlike your scenario, the cruise is basically an all or nothing deal. That is what no one here seems to understand.

CarolA -- YES! I can hardly wait for him and friend to return and hear this trip report. Sitting with the friend, getting a boarding pass, boardfirst.com, Lost luggage, DCL transfer, luggage making it to the ship, DL getting lost or stolen on CC, passport problems, waterproof carrying thing, clothes on the ship I'm sure I'm missing something. I just hope there will be some FUN in there or time to relax sometime! Gosh, and to think on my once in a lifetime cruise, I worried about one of the 7 of us getting sick! :lmao:

Mitsguy,

I believe you have a slightly irrational view on this issue. I am a compulsive planner, who, somewhat like yourself, like to take every possible scenario into account.

One you leave the resort, the luggae is placed on the Disney bus (you can see that occur, as the bus is right outside the door. The people who load/unload the bus do this everyday, and are trained not to forget anything. Once you arrive at Port your luggage is take WITH EVERYONE ELSE"S to the ship. As long as it is properly tagged (I use two sets of tags incase one falls off) it will get to your room. Disney personnel are trained very well. They are not just some people off the street handling your luggage. Is it POSSIBLE for your luggage to get lost..yes..but not PROBABLE... What is the Worst case scenario..You would have to get clothes from the gift shop (most of which are better that what I bring) at Disney or Travel insurance expense, and most likely get a cruise at a very reduced price (refund of some kind). Would it be an inconvienence....yes.. a disaster..no...

As a truly OCD person myself (not as bad as Howard Hughes, but pretty into the handwashing still), some of these "lost luggage" threads are a little over the top. Not only does the OP have an identical thread in the DCL forum about this, but there are multiple threads, with different titles, that the OP started that are basically about the same thing. One was even about what kind of clothes are available for purchase should luggage get lost!

I haven't been on a DCL cruise yet, but I have seen the DCL buses being loaded at some resorts. I've always seen people with their luggage at the buses (if they chose to haul it there), and the driver carefully loading the luggage underneath the bus. Sorry, but after seeing your luggage loaded on the bus, I find it a bit weird that you'd feel the need to still keep track of it en route. Are there nightmare stories about DCL buses losing luggage on the highway or something? What am I missing?

As for the port, you really need to trust someone at some point. I sure would hate to try hauling luggage around such a huge ship through some undoubtedly tiny passageways, without some kind of wheeled cart. What other boat would it be put on?

Sorry, but I have to slightly disagree with the poster immediately above me. The OP's view on this is not just slightly irrational, but fully irrational, given the multitude of threads the OP has started about this one topic, which is hardly even a topic, given the 99.99% success stories I've read on DCL about their luggage handling. To base all of this on some bad cruise report from 2001 (there still is no link to this report - just unsubstantiated hearsay), with hundreds of sailings since then and thousands of positive posts about them, is quite irrational, IMHO.

Editing to add: Is this a joke thread? If so, it is quite a good one, and it sure got me. :lmao:

Well, the fact is that I think Disney is going to TAKE his luggage away at the port. For the safety and convience of the other guests Disney is not going to allow him to haul it himself unless it's very small. And it really only makes sense, if everyone hauled there luggage on at boarding there would be no place to stand. It can be quite a while before you get access to your cabin. (On my cruise they were late getting in that morning so while we got on as scheduled we couldn't go to the cabins for several hours)
