DS-10 (5th grade) told me yesterday that is is too old to go trick or treating this year.

I guess he is growing up.

bummer. My ds turned 10 in April. I hope he's not too old!

If you guys are looking for incentives to your kids going trick or treating you
can tell them:

I and my 8 friends spent 3 weeks hanging out and watching monster movies
and partying before halloween during our SENIOR YEAR (all 17-18 years old) of
highschool preping for our final trick or treat. It had been my dream to do
this kind of thing one last time when I'd really enjoy the free candy and the
fun! So we made awesome costumes, we did our make-up and masks just so
and all of us looked amazing! We really put a lot of effort into our costumes
and decor so that when we went out trick or treating, people would see we
weren't just teens looking for free candy, but instead a group of kids in the
real spirit of all hallows-eve, the original story and the respect for the dead
by dressing up to be able to walk among them!
(although making cool costumes and getting free candy was a HUGE bonus!)

We didn't use a car to get around, we walked all over town and NO HOUSE
turned us down, infact, a few asked for pictures! Lots of kids saw us and
thought we looked really cool. We had tricks we would do if people asked,
and we always were poliet but in character.

It made what could have been a REALLY boring night (or a really bad night
as far as my friends deciding to go to bad parties instead of hanging out with
me) turn into something wicked cool!

My point is: Halloween is totally NOT for babies. if you want to do Halloween
right, it takes planning, preparation and a lot of talent! A cute costume and
a pillow case can only get you so far... the rest is all about charisma!

So, tell your kids, from a group of seniors in highschool, going trick or treating,
as long as the do it full blown and with gusto, is totally, officially, and really,
cool.

:)

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I'm 21 now and I still think this was the best idea ever.
And when I was 10 I went trick or treating as Salior Mercury from the Sailor
Moon show with some friends I'd just made and had an absolute blast.

I know I will cry when daughter feels "too old". I think as long as a kid wants to dress up and go out it's okay. A good kid is always welcome. What makes me nuts are the teens that go out with NO costumes just to get candy and look for trouble. :confused3
I just bought my daughter a size 6 Cinderella costume and thought "yikes, what if she tells me in a couple of years that she doesn't want to dress-up? I mean gosh, I want to dres
s-up...

This may sound strange but two of my sisters are 8 and 10 years younger then me so I never really stopped trick or treating :lmao: I went every year until I was 25 and the only reason I didn't that year was because I was due in a week and my husband wouldn't let me :sad1: But, now I get to go every year with my daughter and she shares the candy :rotfl2:

I'm in the situation of one being too old and one who still wants to go. My DS13 is very tall for his age. Last year he wasn't really into it. This year, we decided he probably should stay home and help give out candy. He goes back and forth on wanting to go. He wants the candy but doesn't want to go out with the "kids." I told him his 10 year old brother.would share with him and we would be sure to have leftovers for him.

It's hard when different phases end for your kids. But I have a friend with older kids who gave me some very good advice. When both of her girls were done with elementary school, I asked her if she was sad. She said no, she was ready to move on. I told her I wasn't done with elementary yet. She said I would be when it was time for my youngest to go to middle school. She said that when your kids advance to something new or grow out of something you really enjoyed, you may lament a little but you'll realize it really is time to move on. I'm finding that to be true. So I'll let the oldest stop trick or treating and enjoy it with the little one for a few more years. Then we'll move on to another phase.....

I went trick or treating until I was an adult LOL! Shoot, I still love going with my girls!

DD will turn 12 in Oct. and asked if she could have a Halloween party (coed) instead of trick-or-treating. I think it sounds like fun. We are going to decorate the garage so if anyone has any good Halloween party ideas please let me know.

Not too old here! I think this year (5th) will be the year ds10 and his pals will be allowed to TorT without parents (everyone goes on the same streets, here). It's a big milestone!

I think each kid is different. DS stopped around 6th or 7th grade, his choice. DD is a freshman in high school and still goes trick or treating.
