Too many points??

We bought 300 points at the BCVs this month because we love the proximity to Epcot, our favorite park for strolling and getting a nice dinner or lunch. We were going to sell our 290 pts in BWV to pay for the Beach Club. Now we are still holding on to them jealously and have not made one move to sell them. We also have 510 OKW pts. 1100 Pts in total!!!
I see on these boards that most people have 150-200 pts. I feel strange not saving points on weekends like most of you do. I would do this too but DH won't hear of moving for the weekend, even though the points at some of the resorts are double for these two days.

There are only the two of us seniors( 71& 56) on the contract and if we invite the kids/grandkids down we have to pay their airfare or they won't come, which is pretty expensive.
None of the 5 kids want our many points when we die because they say they couldn't afford the dues each month. What a waste, since the pts are paid for.

Are we crazy should we sell BW

A lot of people here can not afford the money nor spare the time to use that amount of points, I but say if you are happy currently and can afford the points then that is great!

However, if you feel the need to give away points my family would be very happy to assist you by using those BW points for you. :D

We only own a small amount of points, but I am happy for just those few. I hope to add more later as we can afford them and I hope, one day, my daughters' future families will want to use them with my wife and I.

Would you like another son and daughter with three beautiful grand daughters? We will pay for our own airfare.

I think there are a lot of people who could only dream of having that many points, we have 410 and I would love to do an add on. I think advice is worth exactly what people pay for it so with that said here I go. As long as all those points aren't strapping you financially, you should hold on to them. As soon as you sell them your family is going to turn around and want to go with you.

I hope you make the decision that is best for you, good luck.

I think the polls we have had show that a good deal of people have more than 200 points. Obviously, only you can judge, but in general, people's income goes up, maybe nobody wanting them will change in a few years.

;) icy-dog, if those kids of yours don't get the magic, feel free to write me into your will;) ;) ;) My feeling is you can't have too many points. I also wouldn't want to move over the the weekend. Use the points, that's what they are there for.

Your points are paid for. If you can comfortably afford the other costs and enjoy vacationing with DVC, there is no reason not to continue to hold onto and use the points. There is no reason not to use them on weekends. For that matter, there is no reason not to use them to enjoy other WDW resorts you are curious about or to try the many non-Disney options we have. So what if you could be more miserly in your use of the points? They are yours to spend and enjoy as you like. Just like your real money.

Keep the points as long as you get enjoyment from them. You may very well outlive the contract but, if not, your heirs can do what they want with the points. Maybe they can't afford the fees today but in 30 years their opinion may change. I posted the other day how a relative's children were not interested in DVC 10 years ago and that influenced the parents' decision to buy. Now, they regret that they didn't encourage their parents to make the purchase and the parents are also sorry that they didn't go ahead with purchase. Attitudes and circumstances change over time.

My brother's family currently stand to inhereit my points. Chances are if they got them tomorrow they would probably sell them fairly quickly. However, if my 20 year-old niece inherits them in 30 years, she may want to use them to take her kids and grandkids to WDW. ;) ;) ;) Does any of that have any bearing on how I use my points or how many more add-ons I'll do? Not a bit. :) :)

You may also add my name to the list of those willing to take on the burden of any points that need a new home......;)

I bought in 2000 with an initial allocation 0f 150 pts. Six months later I added on another 75. I have just bought another 100 points at my home resort BWV. I now have a total of 325. The wife says that is enough:eek: But you never know. Saratoga will be open next year

If your points are paid for, you are able to pay the dues and you have the time to go, keep the points and use them! I agree, I don't like to move on weekends and we bought points so that we could stay on the weekends. I would love to have more points! If you can't find anyone to take the BCV points off your hands, I would be more than happy to pay the dues ;) My 5 and 7 year old kids are already fighting over our contracts. Seriously they have asked me if they get to keep coming when we die? I told them I plan to be around for the next 39 years, but if they offer some type of extension, I will be the first to jump at it and then the kids can take over for that.

Can you use them? My issue with that many points is the inability to use them. We are one of those people with 150 points - but with two people working in jobs where vacation is limited and hard to schedule, two kids soon to be in school, family scattered across the country that need visiting, and the desire to travel other places, 150 points is about as many as we can use - unless we decide to become the vacation fairy for our friends and families.

But if you are using them (or can rent them), and it isn't a financial hardship, keep them.

When you can't use your points any more - your kids may be in a position to afford them - circumstances change (In addition to being one of those weirdos who is happy with 150 points, I'm one of those weirdos who has no regrets about not buying sooner - I waited until I could afford it, that was recently - Yeah, it would have been nice to be able to comfortably afford DVC back when I was 25, but that wasn't the case). Or you (or they) can sell them at that point and do something else with the proceeds.

Have you told your children about renting points to pay the dues and using the rest for vacations. I don't have the same problem you do, my daughter loves Disney, so when we go into the resort in the sky she will have my 1220 points. She also cannot afford the dues, but I have told her how to rent and pay for the dues and use the rest . It will work for your family to. Regards, Rich

Thanks Poorman. No we haven't told them to rent any points they can't afford to use, since we have never rented points ourseleves. This is a new concept to me. Is it difficult to rent DVC points out??
I am glad someone has more points than we do. What do you do with your many points?

I am sorry your children don't enjoy Disney as you do. At one time we lived far from home and spent most vacations visiting family. We now have accumulated more vacation time. and live close to family. So we can vacation else where. So we invested in the DVC. In fact, just added on points at BWV so we have three contracts of 235 points each to "gift " to children when we tire of them (Yeah, right!)

Fortunately our children love WDW and DVC. My 16 year old DS just informed me he would keep going on vacation with me until he was married for 2 or 3 years ( a few years ago, he always asked why we always go to Disney). And both he and DD (19) know that the first criteria in a potential mate is a love of Disney.

If you can afford to keep the points, do. Your children's circumstances and attitudes may change.

You guys sound like awesome parents/grandparents :) If DH and I were your kids, we'd go with you in a heartbeat (and we'd also pay our own airfare, LOL!!) Will you use all of the points that you have? If you will, then keep them!! I don't know how old your grandkids are, but would be parents ever allow you to just take the grandchildren? You could give them the airfare as an XMas or b-day gift in that case...it could be a win-win situation. I'd probably keep the BWV points if I were you :) Then again, we have 200 points at BWV but only 80 points total for this year (we just bought resale at the end of last year). We're scraping the points together like you wouldn't believe to be able to take our vacations this year, so I might be a bit biased about having some extra BWV points, LOL

adopt me, all I want are your points..............lol

No problem paying the dues and remembering my adoptive parents each and every trip.

Guess the kids will just have to sell them off afterwards.

Icy-dog, we've never been to any DVC resorts! I really bought for our daughter and grandchildren. My wife and I are goint to BWV in a couple of weeks and then staying on rented points at BWV ,2 BR in September, with whole family.:bounce: :Pinkbounc I rented the points before I bought.

It is easy to rent points that you don't need. I have rented out about 1900 points in the last 3 months. I have made a lot of people happy.:smooth:

If you do a search you will find out the whole story, too long to type.

I am sure we will love our new "Home". when we get there. If you need info on renting, PM me.

Regards , Rich

Icy-dog,

That is awesome you have that many points. Other folks have hit the nail on the head. Perhaps if your children understand there is value in renting the points it may make a difference. They could cover all of their travel expenses and dues with the rental fees.

We currently have 930 points and are more than happy to use them all. We enjoy cruising on the points as well. You have more than enough to enjoy a resort (or a few) stays and a nice 7day cruise. :D

Your kids are very lucky to have you present them with such an offer. I hope it works out well for you.

We are hopeful our son will want to carry on the tradition with his family and us. He has quite a few years to go to get to that point. He had him put it in writing in case he decides he rather vacation without us. ;) lol.

Good luck, enjoy all of your points!!

icy-dog,

If you look through the DVC Rent/Trade Board on this website, you will find that many people are able to fairly easily rent out their points. I am sure some of those renters would be happy to give you rental advice.

When we bought at such a late age we too figured the kids would love them. We thought of family vacations and spending time together but this never came to fruitiion. This year I got bold and asked DDIL to let me take my 11 YO granddaughter with me and my best friend and her granddaughter alone for a girls only vacation. We had such a ball I got up enough nerve to ask DS if we could take 5 YO GS with us to Disney. He said yes too. Yesterday I asked DDIL to come with us to Florida for Vacation next Spring Break and she said maybe, it was up to DS. In order to get them to come with us we will pay for the the airfare for the 5 of them. I am afraid to mention the cost of tickets to her but I think they should pay for them. That may squelch the deal right away. Was thinking about Vero but I only own at WDW locations and won't have a chance at the 7 month window.Anyway if any of you have adorable grandkids/ kids we could borrow let me know.
