Porto's Downtown Disney Location

So I guess the rumors I'm seeing on why this restaurant might not have come is over Porto's gives employees certain holidays off and Disney wants you open every single day of the year
Porto's is not open on Easter or Christmas (fully understandable). The alleged issue (no one has ever provided any concrete proof) was that they also wanted to close their DTD location on those (and other) days as well and the idea that a huge dining location, smack-dab in the middle of the resort and right on the Esplanade would be sitting dark on some of the busiest days for the resort was a deal-breaker.

I'm not sure I buy that as there's no way Disney didn't know Porto's operating schedule when they did their due diligence and got all the way through negotiations. Plus, Earl of Sandwich never stopped the opening of their temporary location near the former ESPN Zone. If Porto's really had backed out, Disney would have literally paid Earl's to keep the current location on the Esplanade open while their new permanent location at the west end of DTD is built.

Regardless, it looks like it's going forward so everyone can relax.

I hope the works still get the day off

I think most fans will be fine with one location going dark on some busy days, Disneyland resort has more then enough food options in my opinion so hope they came to an agreement

I’m personally bummed about this. I love EOS being so close to the parks. I’m pretty sure Portos will be another location that is too crazy for me to ever try to get into. 😏
As I fellow EOS lover I agree. While the food at Porto's looks good, it sounds like it will be a nightmare of a wait for the foreseeable future. And poor EOS...the temporary trailer they have for them is just sad. Hopefully they won't move them again once the building they will go to is finally complete.

Yeah, I mean, why not give EOS that prime spot and put Porto's in the new place. EOS is there NOW!

I think it might work where they can offer holiday bonus pay for those workers willing to work holidays. Because it will be ridiculously busy if they're open. And they will have 6 other locations where I would think they could recruit enough people willing to work a holiday for that bonus.

I tried to go to Porto's in Buena Park on New Year's Day. I didn't see anything indicating that they would be closed after checking their website. Even rode on an ART on-demand ride by myself. It was really weird being in a 40 passenger bus by myself, but the driver said I was fine since they'd be driving anyways. But then I got there and saw a sign saying they were closed for New Year's Day. Ended up going to McDonald's near Knott's Berry Farm.

I might note that those holidays specifically are not observed by everyone. I used to have a Jewish coworker who was delighted to offer up that he'd be happy to work on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day every year, because everyone was SO appreciative that he was willing to do it, and to him it was really no big deal. (And he NEVER worked New Year's as a result!)

Oh yeah. I remember there was (might still be) a local Christmas Day comedy performance of Jewish comedians that was usually at a Chinese restaurant. The joke was that Jews didn't celebrate Christmas, and about the only places that were open on Christmas Day were Chinese retaurants. They call it "Kung Pao Kosher Comedy".

I would venture to guess that out of staff from 7 locations, they'll easily have enough employees willing to work on holidays at the Downtown Disney location. I've been to Disneyland and/or Downtown Disney around holidays, and there are inevitably people willing to work those days. And I've been very appreciative of people willing to do that.

It isn't necessarily about finding employees to work. It is the culture of the company. Chick Fil-A, Hobby Lobby, and others don't open on Sundays. I'm sure they could find employees to work if that was the reason they were closed.

Porto's isn't necessarily like that. They're open on Sundays. They might have limited hours on holidays. I've checked and they're typically open limited hours on Thanksgiving Day and the day after.

It doesn't sound like me that it would necessarily be an obstacle for the Porto family. It sounds more like a tradition that they would allow their employees to be at home on certain holidays, but I wouldn't be surprised if they could be flexible about it because of a business arrangement. I get how it's nonnegotiable for other businesses that they're open Sundays.

Here’s a new article, where Betty Porto was interviewed. Says the new location might open in 2026, but that could just be a guess.

Porto’s still has some big plans in the works, too: The company is preparing an upcoming location in Downtown Disney, which, according to Betty, is projected to open in 2026. She says it will be different from the existing Porto’s locations in that it will be a sit-down restaurant with a full bar.
Landing at Disney is a full-circle moment for the family.
“We came to this country when I was 14, and the first place our parents took us to was Disneyland,” Betty says. “I felt like I was transported to another world, especially coming from Cuba with nothing. So the fact that Disney approached us for this project is really a personal honor.”
She adds, “If my mother could see it, she would be over the moon.”

As long as Earl stays where it is until the end of the year I am okay with whatever they do after that. I don't understand why they didn't just leave Earl where it was and have Porto's build from the ground up where Earl is going now.

It might be EOS's choice. The new building is two stories with a table service gastropub on the top floor.

Exactly. They want to be back in their own bespoke building again. The only reason they opened the Tavern was because they couldn't utilize half of the La Habra building they were paying rent on when they moved in, based on their previous business model. They were a square peg in a round hole. Now that they are comfortable with the table service aspect of the location, they want to be in their own building designed and built from the ground up for them.

Wow!! It really is huge! I hope all the back-and-forth is done with and they can move ahead on getting it done.
