that is the question!
I am doubting the wisdom of planning my trip well in advance, now that I have missed out on a couple of great deals because we had made non-refundable reservations. For example, last summer I purchased a RSG auction from skyauction, to use for a trip in March. We decided not to go in March, and had to use the auction ( at least make a reservation) by the end of June or lose it. We used it to book our accomodations for Oct. Had I not had the accomodation already booked and paid for, I could have moved our trip up by 3 weeks, stayed onsite, and taken advantage of the free dining. After we booked our accomodation, we booked our airline tickets. I felt lucky that I was still able to get some $89. flights (each way), and only had to pay $109 for 2 of our tickets. Oil prices were high, and some airlines were starting to increase their prices. Of course now that they are booked, JetBlue is offering $59. each way for our dates! Sometimes budgeting and planning ahead costs more money in the long run, when you lose out on other great deals.
