Pixie, I figure you are the one to ask about this. I just don't trust the color swatches on Dharma because they look different from my computer to my friend's computer...so here's my question: Can you tell me which dyes equate to kind of the "basic" colors? Which red is a true red? Which green is really green? I guess what I'm trying to say is, at least on my screen, the chinese red looks a little orangey, is that how it turns out or is it not so orange? The kelly green looks so light on my screen, but the emerald looks deeper, any experience? Ok so that's several questions. What I need is:

A true red
A bright basic yellow
A clear bright blue
A clear emerald green
A rich purple
A good black that won't go navy blue

I know you can mix and all that but honestly I'd rather just be able to go "Oh here, I'll make some purple and here's the handy purple dye". Any help would be great!

OK if you want true red the Chinese red is good but it has the * so it takes double the amount. The Fire Red is great too, is a deep red.

The primary yellow is lemon yellow.

Bright blue, go with Turquoise.

The emerald green is really deep and pretty, also the cayman Isle green.

Purple really rich = Grape

New Black, it just takes a lot, instead of 1 teaspoon per 4oz of H2O it takes 4 teaspoons. otherwise it would look dull like an ugly charcoal.

I never got back to "thanking" you for answering my question about how much dye I should order. I still haven't ordered, but have started looking for shirts and the other supplies. Just need to take the plunge and get it going. I just know that once I get started, I'm going to want to tie-dye everything. My DH is already wanting me to do soccer shirts for my DD team!

You will, trust me, is an addiction besides the Mickey head ones I had made for almost anything, for my DD softball camp, for my nieces soccer team, now im working on a bunch of them for a church summer camp.

I know it seems a silly question, but how important is it that you wash the shirts before you soak in soda ash and dye it?

I have 40 shirts ready to go. I forgot to wash them. I can still wash them, but I don't really want to sew 40 mickey heads again. What do you all think? Thank you for your help!!!!!!!!!

I have made these shirts a few times but I have a question. Are you supposed to stitch the mickey head through the front and back of t-shirt or just front? I usually do just the front and it looks great with the mickey and the circuilar tie dye but then the back has tie dye in almost a v pattern in stead of the circular pattern. Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Just the front. You get the shape depending on how you twist it.

So instead of making the long tube shape, you just hold the center and then twist?

Ok, I have asked quite a few questions already but I have another one. I have read through about 60 pages trying to find the answer but I can't find it (although I am sure it is here somewhere). If I am dying several shirts the exact same way, once I let them dry overnight, can I wash them together or will that make the colors more likely to bleed onto the white?

You can wash them together..I've never had a problem with it. BUT I don't know if you meant to write this or not but you're not letting them dry overnight. Whatever your dying should be in a plastic bag overnight, and they'll still be wet the next day.

Thanks for clarifying. I did know that they would still be wet but I don't think I put them in plastic bags last time, so I will definitely do that this time. You are also supposed to rinse them after you take the rubber bands off and then wash immediately right?

I am trying to be hopeful! I have made these shirts a few times and they have turned out ok, but just not like I want them too. I just ordered the dharma dye, so that should help with the colors. Fingers crossed!

Yes, you rinse them under the running water and then to the washer. Very important to keep them moist in the bag, the cure process is the key to a great looking tie dye.
