Ok, here are my shirts! Thanks so much for the instructions. If I do this again in the future, I might have to use better dye. The tulip dye faded SO MUCH after the first washing. I'm pretty happy with the Mickey heads. Some could be more defined, but for my first try, I'm happy with them. I just wish the dye would have been more vibrant. I soaked in soda ash for 20 minutes, and let them sit for over 8 hours (as recommended by the dye kit), and used 100% cotton material. I did wash after dyeing, so I don't know if I should have just dried them instead. I wanted to get the resist off (and it came off in the wash). The resist, I think, did a GREAT job. We painted it on with a small paint brush. I think the rubber bands gave us the really wide white border.
A couple of lessons I learned on this:
Definitely use strong thread. I used a polyester thread and it kept snapping when I would try to tighten it.
When using the resist, don't put it OVER the thread. The thread was pretty much glued in place. I had to re-sew a couple of shirts as a result.
Definitely get that dye in the folds. I had the dye dripping off the shirt. Looked completely saturated to me. But apparently, I didn't do a very good job getting the dye in those folds, especially in the back. I have a lot of white on my shirts as a result.
Better dye might give better, more vibrant results. I like that the tulip dye blended together well (yellow and blue to make green, etc.), but don't like that the green is now more sea foam green than a nice rich green. Just one washing did that.
So, finally, here are my shirts:
