Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

HELP!

So, my mom had gotten the RAINBOW ROCK kit at WM about a month ago for us to use for our shirts. We opened it today, it is the kind where you don't have to soak them in the soda ash-I think it is mixed in? Anyway, it said it should do 20 shirts. I used the whole bottle of all 5 colors on just 4 shirts! It was terrible dye.

So, I want to order from Dharma. I am sure you have said before. What all should I order? We have about 15 shirts left to do. I want 4 colors...advice? Primary or brighter colors (since we are going in TEN days :O) would be great! THANKS!!!

Oh, and does any store sell this brand since I am short on time?

Oh bummer! Im sorry, for those kits aren't so great. Anyway. Dharma has kits for 5, 10 and more shirts, with the primary colors.
But if you already have the little bottles from the kit you can use them, that way you don't have to pay for the whole kit and for the shipping charges (pretty high) you can buy the SODA ASH at home depot or wal mart at the swimming pool area, is call soda ash fixer.

Here what you should order from Dharma..

_Primary colors dye__

Turquoise blue
Yellow Lemon
Fuschia Red

(you can order extra colors if you like too, whatever other colors you like, green perhaps (mix it with yellow and you get lime green)

-Bright Green

If you want to purchase the detergent from dharma that would be fine too..

SLFPT Synthrapol Low Foam - Pint (16oz) $4.09
In Stock Now.

Pick the 3 day deliver (UPS) if you order today or tomorrow before noon it might arrive on Monday.

Then get the soda ash from wal mart or home depot, rubber bands from wal mart too, gloves, etc.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Unfortunately they don't sell them in stores.

I can't find soda ash anywhere and of course I didn't order it from Dharma with my dye bc I thought I could just grab it at walmart. The only thing walmart has is baking soda so I went to target and all they have is sodium hydrogen carbonate. I believe that is the same thing as baking soda. Ugh...any other suggestions??? I see you mentioned Home Depot above, is it called Soda Ash there or is it called something else since it is a pool supply? For about 20 shirts, how much of this stuff do I need?

Thanks!!!

Is there a Michaels near you? I got mine there.

They do have it! Is called SODIUM CARBONATE and you find it where the swimming pool chemicals. Or in Home Depot, they have it outside where the plants are and the pool chemicals.

If you look in the pool supplies it's called "pH Increaser" or "pH Up".

That's what I looked for and our walmart had none. They had huge things of baking soda and a few other things with ingredients I have never heard of, lol. Our walmart is kinda small though so I will check Home Depot tonight. Target had the Aqua Chem brand of Alkalinity Increaser and I bought it thinking that was it but then then I noticed it said the ingredient was Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate. I will find it somewhere! We have a Michaels, Hobby Lobby & Joanns about 20 min away so I can go there if I have to.

Home depot has it for sure! Also the craft stores. :thumbsup2

Well I spoke too soon. After I did the bleach pen I hung them up and they must have been a little too damp still. The bleach ran and now the color on the ears is not round anymore. They look ok but not like so many of these pictured here. It was fun to do with the kids. Even the teenagers participated but I am not happy with the result.

My tip for those still to do yours is to be sure the shirt is completely dry before using the bleach pen and then lie it flat to dry after.

I was at the local Wal-Mart today and they were out of it in the pool supplies, but they DID have it in their spa supplies.....which happened to be beside of the pool chemicals.

Oh no!! They have to be completely dry! :guilty: Sorry

I know it is in this massive thread somewhere but I'm not sure where. I found my soda ash at Jo-Anns today (our walmart, target, and home depot did not have it, ugh) and with my dharma order I bought urea now I just need to know what order and how to do it.

I am dying 10-12 childrens shirts on Monday morning with my daycare kids so can I would like to have them soaked, twisted, wrapped, etc. and ready to just dye on Monday morning.

Do I do the soda ash before anything else or after the MH is on? Can you correct my steps below?

1) trace Mickey head and sew mickey head
2) rinse mickey head fabric marker lines before soda ash so they don't stain??
3) do spiral and rubber bands
4) soak in soda ash
5)squeeze excess water out
6) prepare dye (is this where I use the urea? does it go in with the dye & how much?
7)dye, dye, dye
8) let sit for 24 hours
9) rinse, rinse, rinse
10) wash & dry

Go to the dharma website and find out the directions to use the urea. You have to mix it with the water that you will be using to mix the dye. There you can print de instructions, as well as the soda ash mix.

The marking of the ears shouldn't stain if you are using a fabric marker.

Thanks! I bought a fabric marker today but it said to rinse marks out with water before washing so I wasn't sure. I will go to the Dharma site now!

If your pen is fabric marker then don't worry, you don't have to rinse it. I normally mark my fabric and then soak it in the soda ash no problem.

Yes, go to the dharma and print out the directions. You need to mix one tablespoon of the urea per cup of water then you use that water to mix your dye, but they explain it better there. Print out the directions.

I did 8 this morning...now the waiting part begins! Question though, I made a cup of dye for each color I used and now I have tons of dye left over. Do you know how long it will last after it has been made? I made it about 9 this morning and can't leave to go get more shirts until tonight.

The dharma dye last longer, whenever I have dye left I try to use it within the next 2 or 3 days the most, it gets weaker as the days past. So try to use it as soon as posible.
