Ok, I've tried these shirts before (last year) and I liked them, but I wasn't happy with how my Mickeys turned out. So, after much research and crossing of fingers, I tried them again! They're washed and in the dryer right now, so cross your fingers that the colors stay bright! I'll be posting pics soon... :) Everybody else's shirts look fabulous!

Here are my attempts!

DH's 1st shirt (the colors are actually much brighter, but my flash didn't go off)

Least they're done now. Only 2 bleach pen corrections and one slightly lumpy mickey :rolleyes1

Did you get the $6.00 dresses at wal-mart recently?

Yes, I just picked up a few more yesterday. They run quite small though so plan to buy at least one size bigger than you would normally buy. My daughter who wears a size 10, needed the size 14/16 dress. My size 8 daughter needed the 10/12.

I made some of these last year and was very happy with them I am getting ready to make more but now I am reading about these Dharma dyes, the color options are great. But please tell me more! Are there any colors you would/wouldn't recommend? Also what about black....there are 3 or 4 blacks, which one is best?

Any other tips for using these? Last year I used a tulip kit which was great and easy but very limited on colors.

TIA!!

Does the tulip dye really go bad after 45 minutes like the package says? I bought a dress for my dd to tie dye, but I don't know if the dye is still good or not?

Dharma dye....

About Tulip, depends how long you had the dye mixed? If its only 1 hour of so it would be OK, but after a couple of hours of even days they dye gets weak and the colors would look faded.

So, if its 5 days old, its no good? :sad2: I hate I'm not going to be able to use it.

I would rather not use it, the colors would be dull and you'll ruin your shirt. With those dyes is better to use all of it at once.

I read that someone froze it after mixing it and then she used it later months or weeks later and it was fine. I had never done that so I don't know.

Your shirt looks great :lovestruc :thumbsup2 Like I sad before I had never used floss so I don't know how it would work, I just heard other people mentioned that it had made holes :confused3
Maybe you can give the other lady more accurate advice than me :flower3:

Thanks and have fun making your shirts :hippie:

When I use the dental floss, I just make the stitches about 1/8-1/4 inch big so there's no real big gaps. The one thing that seems to always turn on good on my shirts are the Mickey heads. Now if I can just have less white on the shirt... practice, practice!!

That was me also. It may have been slightly more faded with the colors I had in the freezer, but hardly noticeable. I just did 2 more shirts for friends and they are in plastic right now. I did have a problem and am curious to see what happens. I did part of both of the shirts with dye from the freezer but then ran out. Of course that was after the store was closed!! So as soon as they opened today, I got more dye and finished them up. We'll see how they look... I'm being optimistic :)

Thank you SO MUCH for these instructions!! I just made my first shirts with a friend of mine and they turned out pretty good. More white than I prefer, but ok for a first try. They are in the washer now. I'll try to post pics after I dry them.

Quick question. I see some shirts with a lot of white around Mickey's head. How did you do that? Are most of you using a bleach pen or painting bleach around? If you are only using rubber bands, is it a matter of how tight you do them or how thick you do them, or both? My rubber bands were tight, but only about an inch in width (from the end of mickey's head to the rest of the shirt).

We decided to use resist around the head, and I think it turned out well, but I'm wondering if I used more rubber bands would I be able to skip that step. I don't want to use bleach because I am certain I'll ruin the shirt.

Ok, here are my shirts! Thanks so much for the instructions. If I do this again in the future, I might have to use better dye. The tulip dye faded SO MUCH after the first washing. I'm pretty happy with the Mickey heads. Some could be more defined, but for my first try, I'm happy with them. I just wish the dye would have been more vibrant. I soaked in soda ash for 20 minutes, and let them sit for over 8 hours (as recommended by the dye kit), and used 100% cotton material. I did wash after dyeing, so I don't know if I should have just dried them instead. I wanted to get the resist off (and it came off in the wash). The resist, I think, did a GREAT job. We painted it on with a small paint brush. I think the rubber bands gave us the really wide white border.

A couple of lessons I learned on this:

Definitely use strong thread. I used a polyester thread and it kept snapping when I would try to tighten it.

When using the resist, don't put it OVER the thread. The thread was pretty much glued in place. I had to re-sew a couple of shirts as a result.

Definitely get that dye in the folds. I had the dye dripping off the shirt. Looked completely saturated to me. But apparently, I didn't do a very good job getting the dye in those folds, especially in the back. I have a lot of white on my shirts as a result.

Better dye might give better, more vibrant results. I like that the tulip dye blended together well (yellow and blue to make green, etc.), but don't like that the green is now more sea foam green than a nice rich green. Just one washing did that.

So, finally, here are my shirts:
