Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

I knew that I should have resisted opening this thread!! LOL These are so cute! I know what I'm going to be doing when school is out next week.

And thanks so much for the detailed instructions!

Great thread. I an so inspired that I am on my way to Michaels with a 50% off coupon in hand.:woohoo:

Thank you SO MUCH for these instructions!! I just made my first shirts with a friend of mine and they turned out pretty good. More white than I prefer, but ok for a first try. They are in the washer now. I'll try to post pics after I dry them.

Quick question. I see some shirts with a lot of white around Mickey's head. How did you do that? Are most of you using a bleach pen or painting bleach around? If you are only using rubber bands, is it a matter of how tight you do them or how thick you do them, or both? My rubber bands were tight, but only about an inch in width (from the end of mickey's head to the rest of the shirt).

We decided to use resist around the head, and I think it turned out well, but I'm wondering if I used more rubber bands would I be able to skip that step. I don't want to use bleach because I am certain I'll ruin the shirt.

Hi

I do not use resist at all, I tried once on a different design and didn't like it, its messy and it leaves the shirt stiff in some areas, it might be just me but I really don't like it :goodvibes I use a couple rubber bands thing enough and use just enough dye, sometimes it leaks so :confused3 it all depends I guess.

If the resist worked for you that's great too. :thumbsup2

Ok, here are my shirts! Thanks so much for the instructions. If I do this again in the future, I might have to use better dye. The tulip dye faded SO MUCH after the first washing. I'm pretty happy with the Mickey heads. Some could be more defined, but for my first try, I'm happy with them. I just wish the dye would have been more vibrant. I soaked in soda ash for 20 minutes, and let them sit for over 8 hours (as recommended by the dye kit), and used 100% cotton material. I did wash after dyeing, so I don't know if I should have just dried them instead. I wanted to get the resist off (and it came off in the wash). The resist, I think, did a GREAT job. We painted it on with a small paint brush. I think the rubber bands gave us the really wide white border.

A couple of lessons I learned on this:

Definitely use strong thread. I used a polyester thread and it kept snapping when I would try to tighten it.

When using the resist, don't put it OVER the thread. The thread was pretty much glued in place. I had to re-sew a couple of shirts as a result.

Definitely get that dye in the folds. I had the dye dripping off the shirt. Looked completely saturated to me. But apparently, I didn't do a very good job getting the dye in those folds, especially in the back. I have a lot of white on my shirts as a result.

Better dye might give better, more vibrant results. I like that the tulip dye blended together well (yellow and blue to make green, etc.), but don't like that the green is now more sea foam green than a nice rich green. Just one washing did that.

So, finally, here are my shirts:

Hi! The kids look so cute :lovestruc

Thanks for sharing your tips :thumbsup2 About the dye tulip is OK but if you want brighter colors you have to use less water when mixing them. But for being your first set of shirts you did great with the tulip kit.

You have to wash them after dying them, so you did OK. :thumbsup2

Here some pics for inspiration :lovestruc I really like this first ones, the purple always gives it a kick  or maybe is just me, I really like purple.

These are insanely cute!!! How are you doing the Tutu and how are you attaching it? I don't have kids but my neighbor is a Disney nut too and they are taking their 1 year old and this would be a great little gift for them! Also, what colors did you use for the shirts above? I love that purple and your "regular" colors are the ones I'm looking for but was worried the dharma fushia red primary would be too red and not pink enough and I really want pink in my shirts. Is the same pink used for the Mickey Head the same as the one used in the shirts above it?

Thanks!

Dharma dye....

About Tulip, depends how long you had the dye mixed? If its only 1 hour of so it would be OK, but after a couple of hours of even days they dye gets weak and the colors would look faded.

I have never tie dyed anything (ok, probably as a kid) but want to give this a try. With the Dharma dyes ... would we order the starter kit and some additional color dyes? Would that give us everything we need to make at least 3 differently colored shirts? :confused3

Another question about the Dharma dyes. I still haven't placed my order bc I can't decide how many I'm doing but I think I about have it figured out but now have no idea which size of the dyes to buy. I am making approximately 15 childrens shirt for my daycare kids and 6-8 adult shirts (XL-3X). Should I get the 2oz or 8oz?

If you getting different colors get the 2oz of each color, that would be plenty.

They have different sizes of kits some for a few shirts some for more shirts, the colors they give you are the primary colors:

Turquoise blue
Yellow
Fuchsia Red

With these colors you, the yellow and blue makes green, fuchsia and blue makes purple, yellow and red makes orange.

If you want any other colors then you have to buy them separately.

Thank you.

The colors above are lime green, I mix my own craziness haha of green and yellow to make lime green, and hot pink mix with fuchsia red.

About the fuchsia red primary from Dharma, it is more pink than red.

The Tutu is tied around the ribbon.

We are going to do our shirts this week. Have washed them, hung them on the line to dry and ironed them (all 20!). A few already have the Mickey heads traced, going to do the rest of that tonight.

Looking back thru the thread I have noticed that some shirts have lots of white mixed in, some have very little. Is this due to specific dyes or more from how they were folded/rubber banded? :confused3

THANKS!!! :thumbsup2

For the spider, fold the shirt in half vertically. By this I mean, so the sleeves lay on top of each other. Then you have to spiral twist the shirt, as most do in this thread. Start your spiral where ever you want (toward the top, middle, bottom). For the other design, start with the spiral fold, as in this thread. On one side of the banded shirt, do a single color. On the other side of the shirt, use the rubber bands as a guide for different colors. To avoid too much white, make sure you apply dye into the folds of the shirt. :thumbsup2

You can google folds tie dye wiki, for more info. Click on spiral and spider.

DUH! I should have known you have conquered this! :goodvibes Did you fold yours in half before you "swirled" it? Or did you just swirl, then do the "spider", then mickey, then pie slices?

THANKS!!! :worship:

I would tie off your mickey head and keep it out of your folds. Next, fold the shirt in half, then spiral the shirt at the point of your mickey. After you swirl the shirt, you use the rubber bands (pie slices) to hold the folds in place. ;)

HELP!

So, my mom had gotten the RAINBOW ROCK kit at WM about a month ago for us to use for our shirts. We opened it today, it is the kind where you don't have to soak them in the soda ash-I think it is mixed in? Anyway, it said it should do 20 shirts. I used the whole bottle of all 5 colors on just 4 shirts! It was terrible dye.

So, I want to order from Dharma. I am sure you have said before. What all should I order? We have about 15 shirts left to do. I want 4 colors...advice? Primary or brighter colors (since we are going in TEN days :O) would be great! THANKS!!!

Oh, and does any store sell this brand since I am short on time?
