Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Okay, so I bought a kit from Micheal's. It says nothing about soaking the shirts in soda ash first???:confused3 Am I missing something here, or do I not need to as it is a special kit just for tye dying?:confused3

Help!:laundy:

Would like to try out my first shirts this weekend!
TIA!:wizard:

Pixie, I too, was thinking of doing a polka dot mickey head design. I'm a visual person. So, I'm glad to see yours as a reference. Would it hurt to soak the shirts in soda ash, if the soda ash is already in your dye? This would be the case with using the Tulip brand kits. Thanks!

Hi Pixie, Is there anything special about the silk thread you use. I know you've mentioned it before and I found some at the fabric store. I just wondered if it is just like regular thread but made out of silk. Could you post what brand you use or a pic maybe? As always, thanks!!

I'm curious if anyone else out there has used the resist. I know that Pixiedust hasn't been a fan in the past. Any other people tried it with success?

Hi,
Well the only difference is that the silk thread is very strong and hard to break, I had cut my fingers when pulling it  any silk one you can find, I got mine at wal mart.
:thumbsup2

Ok- so here are my first attempts:

Can you please give me any advise as to what I am doing wrong?

The middle one looks the best... I just think I am missing something.
Thanks!

Hi, maybe the mickey wasn't tied very good, it would be the only reason that the shape didn't form, you have to put the rubber bands really tight. :confused3 Don't worry, we all had our oops at the beginning.

You probably got the kit that has the soda ash already in the dye :thumbsup2

Hi, it would be fine to soak them in the SA, it would not hurt them at all. :thumbsup2

I LOVE them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!and if those are mine I am so so excited!;)

Pixie do you do the bun technique. Or do you do it like a tube that they show on the box. I did the bun techinique last night. I had a lot of white on the front. I re died them be twisting them this time, so I could see the white. Not sure they are going to turn out. I don't think I will make waiting until tomorrow morning. LOL!

I did the twist process like back in 2005 and I think those turned out better.

I wanted to try some with just doing the Mickey head black and the rest red. Is there any trick to using the black? I have read a lot of this thread and thought I read that somewhere. Thanks. Sorry if to many questions. Your shirts are the best!

Hi there,
Yes the bun is the spiral :thumbsup2 the tube is the bulls eye and it doesn't look as pretty like the spiral, well I like the spiral better.

You need to squeeze between the fold really good to get more color and less white, haha i know the hardest part is the waiting :rolleyes1:yay: the twist is the spiral.

Well I use black like any other color, making sure that it doesn't go to the other color, but its cool, black is not so 'bad' depending on the brand is the shade, if you are using the tulip those are great but use less water for a darker shade, dharma's I use new black. :thumbsup2 Don't worry, you can ask me all you need to know. :thumbsup2

Okay...I've decided there needs to be a warning label on the disboards...something like ... Warning: The images you are about to see will cause you to spend HOURS on crazy and insane projects!!! :lmao:

Seriously...someone should have told me how long it takes to sew these Mickey Heads on with dental floss!!! :rotfl2:

I will say, it has gone faster since I got an embroider's hoop!!!:thumbsup2
One more shirt and a dress to sew heads on and then to the "dying"!!!:rotfl:
:laundy:

Wish me luck!!!:wizard:

Ni kidding, same here, between here and the scrapbooking board :scared1: haha, its addicting :yay:

It takes time to do the whole process but once you get going its not so bad, if you not used to sew it can be time consuming, the hoop is a great idea :thumbsup2

Take your time, once you have them all tied really tight with the rubber bands soak them if you are using the soda ash, wring the excess water really good, you want them wet but not dripping, it would wash all the dye away, then take your time with the dye, squeeze the bottle in the folds, let me know if you have any questions any time. :thumbsup2 Good luck and have fun.

While I do not have the beautiful, perfect white borders all the way around my Mickey Heads (:worship:lol!!!), I must say I am pleased as punch at the way all 7 of my projects turned out:thumbsup2. The spirals are not the best, but the kids love 'em and they still think it was just a fun tye dye project!!!:lmao:

1 DS shirt w/ a matching 1 for DH!
1 DD dress w/ 3 Mickey Heads!!!
1 DS shirt in the bullseye style as well!!!

Awesome, glad you and the kids had fun, that's the most important part, don't worry if the spiral is not the best, it was your first try.

Have fun ♥ :yay: :cheer2:

I was in Walmart today and in the girl's department they had some adorable white cotton tiered dresses. I picked up two of them in my girls' sizes. They are 100% organic cotton and cost $6. As soon as I get some free time, I am going to experiment on them to see how a dress would turn out.
