My tie dye tips (from a non-expert first timer)
I will have to post pictures of mine (once I figure out how to post pics) but a friend and I did them and each did them a little different and came up with some tips based on what worked better:
We used silk thread but it broke on 1/2 the shirts when pulling it tight - (aggghhh!!!!) we then had to resew these and did it with dental floss on one because it just seemed quicker- this shirt was on that turned out the best so we'd probabably use dental floss next time - although if doing a ton of shirts dental floss like glide (what we used) is going to cost more
Stitching size - we tried to used tiny stitches - this took forever and in the end, not sure if it was worth it - don't forget, you need the same space between stitches - so if you have a 1/4 inch stich you need a 1/4 inch space between each stitch so you can pull the thread - this is the basting part. I think I'd make my stitches a little wider next time. I think the tiny stiches might also be why the thread broke.
This is were I messed up - there was conflicting info on this - the dharma instruction were different from the board info I think and I got confused. My friend did hers right and hers were way better. Definitely wrap the rubberbands around the mickey head BEFORE putting it in the soda ash. If you don't you can no longer see the mickey head outline to wrap the rubber band after (the ink come soff in the water). And wrap the rubber bands as close to the thread on the mickey head as you can to make a better line.
And my best advice. If you mess up the above step and your mickey head is not defined (mine were navy and looked like a big blue heart/semi mickey headish), use a white fabric pen (bought at Michaels) to draw the mickey head back on as tiny little white dots. It looks almost perfect (from a distance at least. It would have been better if my kids hadn't taken my mickey head stencils for art projects and I could have used them to trace instead of free hand the dots.
Also you need an EXCESSIVE amount of dye - mine was literally laughable how much was on mine - it was like a massacre scene - I kept opening up my shirt and there'd still be white so I just kept dumping more dye - as a result, my colors aren't prescise, more random but hardly any white.
After my trip, I will try and get a chance and post a picture of my shirts so you can see what I mean. I know it doesn't mean much without pictures.
And thanks Pixie for your advice to get me to this point!
Hope that helps someone.
