Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

I have read most of this thread & the only question I think I have is ..... can I use fishing line instead of floss? If not, remind me again what it is I'm supposed to use...............waxed dental floss? Or silk thread? Is that right? Are there any other options? I'm running out of time to get them done & am trying to save myself a trip to the store! :lmao:
Thanks!!!

I made some of these shirts for our trip in June. They didn't turn out quite as good as the ones the year before, but they were decent. Here is a view of them:

I used a bleach pen to outline the MickeyHead to make it more defined. I had an issue with DDs shirt, so we ended up painting the Mickey Head with a purple fabric paint to correct the problem.

There are some amazing shirts on this thread. I am envious of the craftiness.

Are these shirts fairly easy for beginners? Especially ones that are easily frustrated? I would like to give it a try but it seems like a lot of materials and time involved for someone that is craft impaired.

I'm almost tempted to buy some off of etsy for our trip.

I did these 2 years ago for our trip to WDW and getting ready to do another set for our cruise. I thought they were fairly easy.

All you need is.
1. a shirt 100% cotton
2. a needle
3. dental floss I like the kind with wax
4. a washable marker.
5. a mickey head
6. soda ash ( find with the tie dye kits0
7. a tie dye kit (michaels or hobby lobby carry tulip which is what i use)
8. extra rubberbands
9. saran wrap and ziplock bags

What is the marker for?

How do you get the floss out after you are done? Does it just pull out?
I may attempt this at some point in time, but I'm too nervous to do it yet. I am not very crafty when it comes to sewing. And I know it's not a lot of sewing, but for me it is.

Yes you have to pull it out

I think I am going to give this a try! I'll pick up a kit next time I hit the craft store. The family has agreed to wear matching shirts if we do this and that would make me so happy :cloud9:

I had to post these. They are just so wonderful!
Pixiedust made them! So the credit goes to her!

My tie dye tips (from a non-expert first timer)

I will have to post pictures of mine (once I figure out how to post pics) but a friend and I did them and each did them a little different and came up with some tips based on what worked better:

We used silk thread but it broke on 1/2 the shirts when pulling it tight - (aggghhh!!!!) we then had to resew these and did it with dental floss on one because it just seemed quicker- this shirt was on that turned out the best so we'd probabably use dental floss next time - although if doing a ton of shirts dental floss like glide (what we used) is going to cost more

Stitching size - we tried to used tiny stitches - this took forever and in the end, not sure if it was worth it - don't forget, you need the same space between stitches - so if you have a 1/4 inch stich you need a 1/4 inch space between each stitch so you can pull the thread - this is the basting part. I think I'd make my stitches a little wider next time. I think the tiny stiches might also be why the thread broke.

This is were I messed up - there was conflicting info on this - the dharma instruction were different from the board info I think and I got confused. My friend did hers right and hers were way better. Definitely wrap the rubberbands around the mickey head BEFORE putting it in the soda ash. If you don't you can no longer see the mickey head outline to wrap the rubber band after (the ink come soff in the water). And wrap the rubber bands as close to the thread on the mickey head as you can to make a better line.

And my best advice. If you mess up the above step and your mickey head is not defined (mine were navy and looked like a big blue heart/semi mickey headish), use a white fabric pen (bought at Michaels) to draw the mickey head back on as tiny little white dots. It looks almost perfect (from a distance at least. It would have been better if my kids hadn't taken my mickey head stencils for art projects and I could have used them to trace instead of free hand the dots.

Also you need an EXCESSIVE amount of dye - mine was literally laughable how much was on mine - it was like a massacre scene - I kept opening up my shirt and there'd still be white so I just kept dumping more dye - as a result, my colors aren't prescise, more random but hardly any white.

After my trip, I will try and get a chance and post a picture of my shirts so you can see what I mean. I know it doesn't mean much without pictures.

And thanks Pixie for your advice to get me to this point!

Hope that helps someone.

Michelle

Good tips!

Yes, you need to put your bands on mickey before soaking of course the washable marker is going to disappear with the water.

Don't ever undo your shirts once is folded and dyed and then try to tie it again, it will mess up the typical tie dye pattern, you can just peak into the folds but don't unfold it.

Thanks for the tips ♥

Go Packers! Any packers/Mickey lovers can make these colors... I made this one for a Packers freak friend of mine.
