Poly doesn't take color.....anyone? Gad I found this and I Have over 6 mos before the trip.....I have lots of soda ash and dye just sitting around my house.

Thank you! They will, you'll see, just take your time, is all about the time! Time consuming more than anything.

I want to make some red/black tees, and I know from one other experience that they black dye goes much farther than the other colors. I saturated the shirts with the other colors and then just gave a small squirt of black, and the black literally took over the design!

So my question is, how much black dye vs. red dye (as in squirted quantity) do you use so the two colors are properly balanced? Red first, then a touch of black? Would you mind sharing your experience with us?

Thanks!

Has anyone done shirts with pockets?? I'm thinking about putting just a small Mickey head on the pocket itself and then dying the rest of it. Anyone tried this?? Thoughts?? Ideas??

T.

That would be hard to do, but could possibly be done if it was a large enough pocket. A small pocket wouldn't have enough fabric (like the types of pockets on women's tees). You'd have to make sure to catch the pocket material in the stitching, but my guess is that the design might get lost in the banding. I'd try it on a piece of scrap fabric first to see how it turns out befor trying it on a shirt.

Or, you could do it separately and then sew it onto the shirt. Just a thought.

Does anyone know if there are dyes available to dye completely non cotton shirts?

The current issue of Mary Jane's Farm (feb/mar 2011) tells how to tie dye with Kool-Aid using protein fiber fabrics (i.e., wool, silk) and untreated nylon. It won't stick to cellulose fibers like cotton, rayon or hemp. We did this on wool socks once (painted them on) and it worked wonderfully. The colors are still intense after repeated washings.

Basically, mix 2 packs Kool-Aid (without sweetener!) with 1/4 c. vinegar. Let sit 24 hours in a bag (this is what we did for our socks), then air dry. Set colors in with an iron, making sure to use a press cloth (you won't need to do this with the wool items). Hand washing is recommended.

If I try this I'll let you know. I first need to find the tees in the appropriate fabrics.

Has anyone else tried this?

we saw a family at Disney over the weekend with red/black tie dye mickey head tshirts - I was so tempted to go say hi, you must have visited the DisBoards! LOL The red/black really looked good!

We are Georgia Fans so we loooooveee Red/black. My experience with black is same with any other colors, i treat it the same, same amount to get a uniform result..

Here a couple I made a while ago.....

And with Black Mickey...

I intentionally left some white because that is how i wanted them.

Those are fantastic! I like how classic they look.

Maybe my black bled so much because I put it on last and the shirt was already saturated with dye. I'll need to remember that for the next batch.

Roxy,
Which red did you use on these? I have Oxblood from Dharma and I don't care much for it. It's not bright enough. I love this red though! Is it Scarlet?
Thanks,
Ann

I was looking at the dharma site, I usually use the dyson from Joanns craft store, but your colors are alot brighter

My neice came up with the idea for this years color theme to be

Purple, Black and Yellow

With only 3 colors I need to make like 12 adult shirts
how much dye do I need?

:)

I'd never used Dyson, as far as I know they are not fiber reactive, but I can tell from about Dharmas. You should be fine with one canister of each color.

So you think the 2 ounce is enough..
Ive always used the dyson, with my in store coupons..
to get 40% off ,but I use less water and it cost me tons..

Its not even the money, but If I dont cut the water and let it set for 24 hours, etc.. The colors fade so much..

Ive been lucky a few times to get BRIGHT colors with them, but other times, its in the pastels, and my niece is all gothic now, so she wanted

Black Grey and Purple (think nightmare before christmas colors)

I talked her into some yellow to brighten it up

we are going in August..

LOL
Im curious to see how those work out
and Dharma has soo many color choices of 1 color
I picked out grape and when it went to my basket the little color tile turned from grape color to a blue almost..

How to know what colors to get
I wanted a black, easy enough
Purple like they they have in their grape color
and a strong bright yellow..

Ahhhh
Good thing I have 6 months.. These things take me so long to figure out.

Trust me, they is plenty with the 2oz of each color, you only need a teaspoon per 4 oz of water, unless is a color with the * next to color, like the brown and most darker colors, richer colors you need 2 tablespoons per 4oz, and the blacks are 4 tablespoons but those colors have more dye.

The problem with the Dyson is that is not fiber reactive dye, is not made for tie dye, I think you boil it or something like that to cure it, so you are just wasting your money and effort.

About the colors swatches they do vary from the color on the screen, I can tell you that Grape is a very rich pretty purple, also deep purple, fuchsia red is fuchsia not RED, but is your primary red.

If you want a pretty bright red go with fire red, hot pink is pretty hot pink the common hot pink, for a lighter pink go with baby pink, bright green is the normal green, kelly green is very rich almost blue, or aqua green.

As for black go with New Black, is the best one from dharma.

I made my order last night

I got
New Black
Bright Yellow (hope thats a good one)
and
Orchid for our purple

And my son yes wanted tye dye sheets so he picked out
Bright Green
Robins Egg Blue
and Plum Blossom

Very girly to me colors, but what ever makes him happy..

I will be posting again when it comes time to dye.. LOL

Ive dyed over the years over 40-50 shirts, but first time using REAL dye..
LOL

Im so excited..
Going to look for white sheets today

Was thinking either Jersery cotton or he really wanted flannel..
If its 100% cotton the flannle should do nicely right.?
I found at bed bath and beyond 100% flannel for 20 bucks plus I have a 20% off store coupon,,.
